I usually use monitor input for a mixer headphone talk back to the boom operator. Good thing is that you can turn it on and off independently from the actual boom mic headphone output.

what's up with the crazy loud noise floor on the recording? Definitely not recorded with a SoundDevices piece of equipment. I do want one of these items though!

Shooting one-man-band style, I didn't have anyone monitoring audio... and my wireless mic battery died halfway through the demo. Rather than re-shoot the entire demo, or have half with clean audio and half without, I decided to go entirely with the backup short shotgun mic I had mounted on the camera. Better some sound than no sound!

Doesn't the Rode TX have a headphone output? Why do you need both?

So the preamp is a device that cuts the noise and give a clean signal? Does a field mixer or a studio mixer do that? My Azden shotgun mic keeps recording this hiss and air conditioning. Does the SD MM1 reduce that? If you say yes I'll buy it according to your advice :)
I really need your advice. Waiting for your reply.

The preamp won't necessarily cut any noise, but it does offer high pass / rumble filtering. You can set the exact audio level you want to send on to your recording device. Some audio components can eliminate noise in realtime while recording, but based on your comment you might be better off reducing noise in post production editing. The MM-1 won't eliminate hiss. If your mic level for recording is set too high, but the sound you are picking up is low, that would introduce hiss into the audio. Try turning down your mic level input and/or getting your mic closer to the sound source. Also keep in mind that every device will introduce some sort of noise... generally the cheaper the device, the more noise you'll have that the manufacturer considers "acceptable." Good luck!

seems a little bulky. I was looking for a solution to mount the wireless transmitter on the pole and use the output of the mixer for monitoring. but this requires another wireless system (mostly like the one you'd use on lavs). but then you would listen to the wireless more than the actual mic preamp. so, it's OK just for reference.... any other portable solution? PS. boom pols with cable inside them ? nono for film. okay for TV I guess, kinda noisy on handling.

My MM1 just came with the preamp itself. Does anyone know where I can find a -30db PAD cable like the one featured in this video? I'm having trouble searching for it online.

These cables are not included with the MM-1 and never were.
