    I finally bought the D850 after damaging the D7200, but am I happy with my purchase?
    So what's the backstory behind this video?
    Well, I’m a Landscape photographer, based in the UK, searching for interesting locations, mainly around the UK, but also travelling further afield. I endeavour to make all of my videos as interesting as possible, with editing skills I've picked up over the years, also with adding music to match the mood of the locations and images. Using a basic set up, consisting of my DJI Osmo Action, my Mavic Pro Drone (although not all the time) and either my trusty Nikon D850 or my Nikon D7200 cameras, for the images.
    I always show my images, no matter how unhappy I am with them, I think you as the viewer deserve to see the good along with the bad, after all, if it’s on the video, you've already seen behind the scenes.
    So sit back, grab a coffee or a tea, relax and enjoy my slightly unprofessional, sometimes comical, but always crammed with passion video.

    I'm potentially buying a used d850 and a 14-24 in a few hours!!
    It'll compliment the d500 which I use for action and underwater photography
    Edit: damn, I just came home with one 😂

    Although I have a couple of Z cameras and a Z9 on order - My D850 bodies are still my go-to cameras.
    Z cameras are fun but a D850 gets the job done quickly and reliably - its probably the best DSLR ever made.
    When using Z cameras I miss all the illuminated buttons of the D850.

      Roy, not going to argue the D850 experience as I own one and love it. I've been shooting the Z9 for 4 months. I'm not sure what you shoot, but if your needs and experience are anything like mine, you might not pick up your D850 again (after getting the Z9). My D850 might have to go up for sale as I haven't used it but once (because I wanted to shoot the Nikkor 180mm D f/2.8 lens using AF (not manual focus). So if you own a number of screw drive lenses, you will probably still want to keep the D850 till the mirrorless lens lineup rounds itself out. There still isn't any mid range portrait lenses on the Z roadmap (i.e. natives Z 105mm f/1.4 or 1.2, 135mm f/1.4 or 1.8, 200mm f/1.8 or f/2, 300mm f/2.8). Hope you get your camera soon. I'll be looking for your experience once you have it in hand.

    Very interesting vlog, I enjoyed watching it, and we’ve all done the long wait for new gear, always exciting. Loved the comment “because I wanted it” to sum up why you bought the D850. I think we get caught up by the continuous drum beating by TH-camrs for mirrorless and forget what our dslrs can actually do. Some great images on this vlog, look forward to seeing some more. 💯

      @@BenMcDonaldPhotography I love this reply to Tom, Ben! Spot on! I can still get great images with my old D700 Fx, and D300 DX Camera! They were ‘State of the Art’ back in their day. Of course technology marches on, and newer cameras are going to benefit from that. People get caught up in ‘chasing that perfect camera,’ whilst not concentrating on just trying to improve their picture taking ability. Peace!

      @@georgedavall9449 Thank you Tony, yeah I love shooting on the D7200, I love taking it out with the knowledge that it's not worth a fraction of the price of the D850, yet the images, I have to say are just as good. Both the D700 & D300 are great cameras too. I used the D300 a while ago and loved it.

    • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tom, I can't argue the continuous "drum beating of TH-camrs" for mirrorless (PS I'm a drummer). I know what you are referring to, but I don't believe people using DSLRs like the D850, D5, D500, D3, D700 etc or similar Canon models actually forget what they can do. Doesn't mean we don't love them either. I had a list of 30 features Nikon Mirrorless would have to offer me to move to mirrorless. Must haves for me included: Better faster more accurate AF, a blackout free shooting experience, silent shooting without rolling shutter or banding, deep buffer, long battery life, excellent EVF experience, high frame rate, useable video AF, smaller file sizes, programable buttons, sensor shield to protect from dust/sand/dirt with lens changes in bad environments, excellent glass. The Z9 hit 28 of the 30 things I was looking for, but now (and after firmware 2.0 upgrade in two days) will offer things I couldn't have imagined. Usable banks. Astro photography settings (i.e. Starlight mode - improving the ability to focus down to -8eV, and warm colors - red - saving your night vision), frame rates of 30 to 120 fps - which I've used for creative purposes, now pre-capture, setting 4 different pre-set focus points on your telephoto glass to quickly get your focus on 4 different areas (i.e. home plate, 3rd base, pitchers mound), accurate human, animal eye detect that is accurate and maintained. Again, if you need these features as I do, then I went there because I needed it, not cause TH-camrs pushed me there (nor because I forgot what my DSLR could do). I went there more because of what my D850 DSLR could not do.

      Don't overlook used gear. I managed to snag a used D850 in mint condition with only 7700 clicks on the shutter (verified) along with a Nikon MB-D18 grip, 3 Nikon batteries, a charger and a few arca style camera frames (one each for use with and without the grip) All for $2600 off of Ebay. With people selling off their D850's and other Nikon bodies to go mirrorless deals can be had.

    A straightforward video without any messing around. I’ve just swapped my second 810 for an 850 and so far it’s living up to its expectations. I think it’s fair to mention I also have Z6ii’s with a few Z lenses but the 850 is my go to for the studio and events. For me I find it more reliable to use than the mirrorless.

    "Because it's the one I wanted." Sounds like a good reason to me. I've been shooting Nikon for 30+ years and my first FF DSLR was the D750 (which I still have). I purchased a D850 in December 2019 because Nikon had a sale, dropping the price by $500 US and they threw in the Battery Grip (a $400 option) for free. At the time, I was not impressed with Nikon's first generation Z6s and 7s due to short battery life, one memory card and no battery grip. While the second gen. versions corrected some of those issues, I am still not persuaded that I need a mirrorless body. Should I make that transition, I will purchase the FTZ II adapter as I have a LOT of F mount glass.
    Personally, I think you made a great decision and don't ever let anyone cause you to second guess that decision. The D850 is and will remain the finest DSLR ever produced.
    Thanks for this video and I am now a subscriber.

      Paul Connors, the adapted F-mount lenses work great. I have Sigma Art, a Nikon F1.4 Prime, the 24-70 F2.8G and a Tokina wide angle… every one of them works better than on my D750 and the IBIS helps a lot. My .02 is that the AF is great also but I don’t know if I love the electronic viewfinder as much as the optical… I do like it but it’s never ready when I am…

      @paulconnors2078 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@frankt9279 Nope, 2X the MP in the D850 and in a smaller body (even with the grip attached). The D5 is great for Sports and fast action but not so great for general photography. The D6 was not that much of an improvement and probably should have been branded as a "D5S."

      @@gingrai00 I heard that getting accustomed to an EVF vs. an OVF takes some adjustment. I think that when I do transition, that it'll probably be right to the Z9 or perhaps a Z8 if Nikon brings one out with some pared down specs and an equal or better sensor.
      Given that Canon just came out with 2 new APS-C sensor bodies (i.e. the R7 and R10), I think Nikon will have to follow suit. Plus, a lot of wildlife shooters are lamenting the discontinuance of the D500. Nikon will probably have to fill that gap with something. However, the question remains "what will that something be?"

    I loved my Nikon D850 but swapped to the Z7 simply because of weight. I am up in the Snowdonia mountains most weekends and carrying a D850 with a 70-200mm was murder.
    One thing I absolutely love about the D850 is the ability to crop in without much detriment to the final image. I had a similar start to yourself: D3300 - d7000 - D750 - d850 and now the Z7. You will definitely not regret your new purchase.

      @@sinetwo With my D850 I used a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 and the pair are pretty heavy but with the Z7 I bought the Nikkor 24-70mm f/4 and the pairing is considerably lighter. With other stuff in the backpack I much prefer the new smaller set up. As I mentioned when hiking up the Snowdonian mountains it is a no brainer to go lighter and smaller.I also had a Tamro70-200mm G2 lens and have replaced that with the Nikkor 24-200mm which is very light - you need to give up a little bit of quality as the Tamron lens is sensational but the Nikkor 24-200mm is pretty good too.

I love the camera and I'm having a hard time parting with mine, but the market and the use of the Z9 (and lack of use of the D850) has changed my mind. Like other comments here I absolutely loved the D850 and would recommend it to anyone. But, being of a certain age now, for landscape work I started to leave stuff at home rather than carry the camera and a bagfull of lenses. So I bit the bullet and sold most of the gear going instead for the Z7II and three f4 zooms to again keep the weight down. In total saving nearly 2kg.

Just couldn’t get rid of my beloved D3S and D7100 with a collection of 28 manual and auto focus lenses to go to Z series Mirrorless and new lenses. Getting the D850 was the right choice with the amount of F mount lenses I have. The best feature for me is the focus peaking and the sharp results I get with 1980’s manual focus glass. Taken Some amazing pics with my 20mm F3.5 manual focus and my 135mm F2.8. Best portraits ever with my 105mm F2 DC and 180mm F2.8! • @dance2jam
      @dance2jam 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am curious David, why do you always sway back (I assume this is in a decision of which to buy) between the D850 (DSLR) and mirrorless Canon R5 for wildlife? Both amazing cameras. Now I'm a Nikon wildlife/sports/action photographer and moved from the D850/D500 to Z9. Without getting into the weeds, I can't go back (to the D850). I shoot with a number of Canon R5/R3 shooters and Sony a1/a9ii shooters. We swap shooting experiences from time to time and I've used their a1s and R3/R5s a bit. They all have their good and bad points. Just depends on your needs. What is funny is that the Canon (more than Sony) peeps have been ogling the Z9 when I go out like it was a rare bird never seen in these here parts. So Nikon, for the first time in 4 to 5 years, is getting some street cred. With the recent 800mm f/6.3 S, VR, PF lens weight and price it's been interesting. I would say to you (and you likely already know this) don't just consider the camera and price of the body, because you'll spend more on glass etc in the long run so consider the entire experience and echo system. Good luck with your decision.

    What a fantastic video. Loved your style. I have just bought a D850 and waiting for it to arrive. Currently I shoot D800 had it since new and never let me down. Never had a backup camera after shooting loads of weddings and family’s and now mainly sports since 2013. I dropped it in 2017 and cracked the case and it’s never missed a beat although I had to get a battery grip because I could not get a battery in or out of the original body. It is an Absolute bombproof camera. I find it hard to believe you only have 1.4 subscribers. You have another one now. I also loved your photos of Blackpool. I am off to watch some more of your videos. Thanks for uploading and see you in the next one. All the best. Adrian

    Great vid! My d700 bit the dust 6 months after Nikon stopped supporting repairs :( ready to get back into shooting again, have a d850 on order. Love the dslr cams the best, but the biggest reason I chose dslr over the z series..... glass. Got too much glass that won't work on the Z cams.. the z cams also feel so light, its weird going from a cam that feels like a battle weapon.. haha! Looking forward to the 850.. thanks for the great vid.

      Depends on your budget, what you like or need to shoot, and what you're looking for out of the experience. I've shot the Nikon D700, D850, D500, and now the Z9 (for 4 months). For what I do and shoot, I haven't picked up the D850 in 4 months but once (and I love that camera). While the future is mirrorless for now, people still love film, vinyl - records, and reading books (on paper). Go to your local camera store and see if they will let you shoot with a few mirrorless models vs D850. I'd be happy to relate my experience, but I'm not sure it's relevant to your needs.

So, sold the XH2s and all my Fuji branded lenses and taking a chance on the camera of my dreams. Mirrorless just isn't what I want to shoot with all the time. Loved the start Ben. Cracking images throughout especially the one at 15:18 of the steps, the tower and the new ride. D850 was always out of my price range but the Z6 I use now is quite a weight saving compared to my D750. Only issue now is a new partner that has caught the bug and I'm lugging my mirrorless gear around and my old D750 and F Mount glass and two tripods! She gets to walk the dog. Think I'm going wrong here somewhere:)

    Looking at videos on D850 to see if it is still a popular camera in 2022. I paid full price a few years ago...then lost my beautiful studio and I had to rethink my situation. I never stopped loving this camera...it has spoiled me as I dont want to pick up my 2 Nikon DFs very much. I shoot portraits and mostly dancers in the studio and at performances..fast action no flash setting iso to 3200 shutter 1/320 low light...I make my own prints and they look good in 13x19...I still forget about the touch screne! Anyway I love this camera...its practically a medium format instrument...I cant switch to mirrorless. This is probably my last camera...but always buying grids, modifiers etc etc!!! I enjoyed seeing you wake up to coffee and going out on your adventure...soooo different than my life here in NYC...some of the soul kicked out but trying to bounce back...I have a shoot tomorrow in my smaller space. Ready to go with the D850!

    I stayed with you Ben. I enjoyed the video. Your compositions are breathtaking, especially the scenes at night. It is clear the D-850 brings you joy. Like you, I had to wait for a price drop. I also purchased the refurbished D-850 to justify the purchase relative to my budget. My first dSLR purchase, coming from point and shoot, was the D-40, then the D-700, which quite frankly, made me giggle like a school boy when I unboxed it and considered the heft of that camera compared to the D-40. And now, the D-850. I just touched the tip of the iceberg in understanding and using all the features. I have a modest collection of lenses and purchased pro glass earlier this year to complement the stately D-850. Thanks for your video.

    Great to see you rocking the D850 Ben. Can I add my scenario to the discussion.....
    I’m just about to sell my D750, D800 & D850 and most of the F mount glass and get a Z6ii & Z7ii.
    I shoot a mix of stills and video, and at 60 years of age, viewing the back screens now means putting strong reading glasses on and off, even just to read the menus.
    With the mirror-less bodies I can view all of that in the viewfinder crystal clear, with no fiddling around with reading glasses. That alone is a game changer. Oh, and those Z lenses are O-so-sharp shooting wide open!
    Happy shooting everyone.

    I owned a D810 and a D7100, which is basically a cropped version of the D810. I recently traded one of those toward a D850. I have about twenty F-mount lenses and just do not see going mirrorless with Nikon at this time or any time in the next few years. I have kept the D7100 even while also adding a D500. I use all of then about equally and they even compete with my Pentax K1 and Olympus OMD system. The D850 is without a doubt the best body I have used. I purchased it for about half of new cost and it had an unbelievable low shutter count of 357. It's a keeper for many years.

Not sure when / if I will go mirrorless. Hey, on the crack on the D7200, to ensure it remains waterproof, mix up a little epoxy glue and fill the crack. If you're more concerned about performance than looks, the epoxy filling the small crack will work just fine. I wouldn't use super glue because it won't fill the void the way the thicker 2 part epoxy would. It will look like "poo" but it will work. Good work on taking it apart and putting it back together. I never have problems taking things apart, it is the putting back together where I usually hit the wall.

    I bought my D850 back in 2018 and I Love it. What I don't love about it is Nikon and their new software policy that doesn't work with the D850. No firmware update or support for N-Log for the D850, and No update on the NX-Tether support for the D850. NX-Tether works with the D6 and D780, and of course all the Z Series cameras. This is no way to treat loyal Nikon D850 camera owners. I have contacted them and of course, no response. The N-Log issue may be about the Nikon Sensor. But the NX Tether software is just negligence and a huge F.Y. to Nikon D850 camera owners who originally spent $3,200.00 when the D850 came out. How does Nikon do that? As you can see, I'm fuming over this one. You want to hear the worst part? Nikon NX-Tether actually detects, indicates that the camera is connected and then grays out D850 in the little pop-up window when you push the bright Yellow button. If that ain't spitting in someone's face, I don't know what is. So now I have go and spend $300.00 for reliable Tethering software from Capture One.

    I much prefer semi-pro DSLR bodies for their size, weight, design, and build quality; the WORST thing Cannon, Nikon, and Sony did was to deviate from the designs of DSLR cameras when it came to designing Mirrorless cameras; as they are very linear with hard edges; unlike the Nikon D850, D500, and Cannon EOS 5D MKIV which have curvy contours. I would also like manufacturers increase the weight and size of their Mirrorless cameras.

    Think about this. A used Z6 is 1100 USD, then you need FTZ to use all my nikon lenses, 250, then i need a QXD 299. So no im at 1700usd, used a D850 is 1750 usd and i can use my lenses, and use an SD card. I use Black magic for video and i have a z6 but buying another didnt make sense when the 850 is bettet photo quality

    I prefer for my Wildlife work the d850 all the time over the Z6 and Z7. Both cameras are not useable for fast moving subject, terrible autofocus, simply horrible. Even the new Firmware does not change this a lot. Waiting on the Z9!

    A very good post, it is always said only the Dslr death, but as is known death said live longer, I like my D 850 and will still use it for a very, very long time, I see no reason at all to bring up this hype of mirrorless, for a technique that is matured over decades, and I make with the best camera no better pictures if I can not use them, have no creativity, the picture still makes the person behind the camera that is the crucial thing in the first place

  • @Audimann

    This is pretty much the best dslr existing today. Maybe Nikon will make a successor but how much better will it get. And maybe but more likely Nikon will continue making mirrorless cameras only.

    It is absolutely not worth it new at the current price point. So many better options. Throw $1,500 more and you even get a GFX50s II, which also has IBIS. If you find it used at a way cheaper price, then maybe….

    • @BenMcDonaldPhotography
      @BenMcDonaldPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And here's the problem, how much do you spend? Near double is out of my budget but if you can afford it why not spend more, then more and so on. Thanks for watching and all the best.

    • @unstanic
      @unstanic 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BenMcDonaldPhotography In the better options I am including the Z7 II, which if I’m not mistaken is only around $700 more. I would definitely not cheap out on this difference. Saving those $700 will take you 4 years back, in an industry that technologically is blooming the last couple of years.
      Will D850 be a great tool for you for years to come? Absolutely yes. I just don’t think it’s a smart buy at this point in time. Unless bought used at a lower price of course! But in general prices don’t go down these days… Maybe chip shortage?

    Old school??? What? So something 5 or 6 years old is "old school"? The old school in photography will be early 2000. And, in everyday life, 40 years ago. Nikon D850 is not old school. Mirrorless cameras have been around way over 6 years, so are they considered "old school"?

    • @BenMcDonaldPhotography
      @BenMcDonaldPhotography  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Once a newer replacement camera comes out then yes it’s considered old school, and not as old as camera from 2000 clearly, but I’m saying that it’s not cutting edge technology if you were considering buying one today.

      @@BenMcDonaldPhotography It's nice to see someone genuine who spends actual money on gear that actually serves a purpose of taking pictures. There's SO MANY photography related channels that are all about the latest and greatest gear as if it's cheap and as if the gear from 3-5-10 years ago can't do it's job anymore. Most of them don't mention that they get the gear for free or they are sponsored by manufacturers to say nice things about the gear they showcase.
