Not All Woodworking Projects Work On YouTube

  • I had a client ask to take some old silky oak boards and make them a table top. It was a simple request and if the boards hadn't been so warped it would've been a simple job.

    What I don't see a lot of woodworkers do is provide a breakdown of their "profit" into overhead costs etc. So how much of that 780 dollars goes to saving up to eventually replace old tools and machines? How much do you really get to profit otherwise eventually in 5 years you'll have to replace the tablesaw and if you don't account for it dying on you in your earlier projects then you suddenly have a huge loss during a project as well.

      It’s a really good point but I think it’s a luxury for a lot of new makers. I’m using the deposit of my current job to pay off debt from a previous job, so the thought of saving for the future isn’t even possible. But eventually the work will (cross fingers) be regular enough that future expenses can be accounted for

    Not boring, love the honest breakdown. I always finish up your videos thinking "OK, how do I implement those lessons into my workflow?". 👍

    I really like seeing the breakdown at the end. Thank you for including that!

    I enjoyed that. It's the thought processes & problem solving that is interesting.

    Robin, I've struggled with twisted, bowed, and/or cupped lumber when milling for 10 foot long glue ups. It was educational seeing your approach. That massive tabletop turned out beautifully. I also enjoyed your recap of the business side. Nice vid!

    Robin, I think you did a great job making a “boring” job entertaining. Have you considered a couple small chain hoists attached to the ceiling? Seems like they would be a back/project saver. Keep it up buddy!

    Well done Robin. The table looks very nice. (I'm not sure how something that large and thin will last outside). The 4 hours is "education". I think the quoted price sounded reasonable for both parties. Thanks for the vid. Cheers David

    I thought it was a great video. Yes it’s an easier build as far as projects go but I find it fascinating about how long things actually take. There are few videos that look at actual times and costings.
    The new wall as a video back drop looks good also. 👍

    Awesome video! Thanks for doing the business side of things too! Have you thought of a track saw for those long cuts? Also where can we watch the videos you did for Bosch and their tools?

      Thanks! Track saw is on the list, will likely go that route before getting a table saw. All of the Bosch videos are on my Instagram

    Ud needa use $50 worth of dominos in something like that. You took the best approach IMO.
    Or maybe domino the smaller glue ups?

    So - side question - how longs the walk from the timber yard to the workshop? 😬

    • @RobinLewisMakes
      @RobinLewisMakes  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Haha. A few hundred meters from the biggest woodworking store in town, very handy!
