  • How Powerful is Russia Zircon missile anti-ship hypersonic cruise missile. The 3M22 Tsirkon missile or Zircon missile is a scramjet-powered maneuvering hypersonic cruise missile being developed by Russia. The missile can develop a speed of Mach 9 and fly at an altitude of 30-40 km where the range and speed increase as air resistance is smaller. Experts estimate the payload at 300-400 kg and the missile length at 8-10 meters. For comparison the Tomahawk cruise missiles carried by U.S. Navy and Royal Navy submarines fly at around Mach 0.75.

We've also reduced our maximum yield and have phased out massive strategic warheads of larger than 1.2 megatons (or 15 megaton MK-17 warheads...) due to how much collateral damage they can cause, after the Castle Bravo incident, where the fallout was much greater that predicted.
      Our primary warhead the W-87 is only 475 kilotons though they are small enough to be used in a MIRV. Russia has the same capability though in their SLBM, carrying up to 4 500k warheads, or 12 100kt warheads.

Russia is able to produce excellent military hardware for fraction of the price of US's weaponry! Russians also don't need vast amount of money to fund countless bases and invasions world wide. Last and very important thing is word "asymmetric". Russia learned it's lesson from cold war weapon's race and don't want to follow US "symmetrically". USA is having huge navy, very very expensive thing to own. Russia is making anti ship systems for small fraction of US's navy price. Almost every Russian vessel can fire all of those systems. Missiles do indeed get a plasma coating moving at certain hypersonic speeds, the issue is it causes something called plasma blackout, which actually jams the missile from receiving communications. The plasma does not make it invisible to radar, if anything it makes it more visible since it's hotter, showing up on thermal imaging easier. It also can not jam radars otherwise how would it get it's signal out and know where to go? Russia lies all the time. It's rather easy to catch them.

      "Russian patent number 2579409 relates to the field of rocket technology, and more specifically to hypersonic cruise missiles equipped with a hypersonic ramjet engine. The invention describes a method of application and device hypersonic cruise missile (CRPD), allowing to solve the problem of performing a combat mission to destroy ground and surface targets of such a missile. The described invention is designed to maximize the combat potential of the CMP with the scramjet.
      The design mode for the scramjet are high-altitude cruise conditions while maintaining the estimated cruise speed, and the need to reduce the altitude and flight speed creates difficult technical problems due to the fact that:
      an engine designed to perform a hypersonic mid-flight at high altitude is not able to continue to work at low-altitude trajectory sections associated with a decrease in the flight number M, hence, the rocket must approach the ground or surface target with an inactive engine;
      characteristics of sustainability and controllability of CRPD with inactive scramjet significantly deteriorate, loss of stability becomes possible;
      there is also a danger of destruction of the scramjet design due to the increase in pressure in the flow part of the engine while reducing the CMP from the march height before hitting the target."

    This video is made in the way to convince viewers that Zircon which in high altitude is flying up to Mach 15 and in dense air close to surface up to Mach 9 is a piece of cake for our air defence. Speaker forgot to mention that hypersonic missile at such speeds creates a cloud of plasma around missile and because plasma is extremely hot it destroys any microwave signal which makes missile de facto invisible to any radar. Only way to detect incoming missile is by heath sensors and infrared radars. There is practically no chance to avoid or to shoot down hypersonic missile under this conditions.
    I am impressed how many data you have taking in account that Zircon missile is shrouded in secrecy and besides that we still did not develop our own hypersonic technology and all late advancements come from Russia where our agents sucessful bribed at least two major Russian scientists to pass us their secrets. How that ended for them is known, both scientists were arrested and will die in gulag. However, it is obvious that they passed a lots of data because for the first time in our history of hypersonic missile development test missiles completed flight without being destroyed after only few seconds of flight. Our missiles reached speed of just about Mach 5 which clasifies them as a hypersonic missiles. If we do not acquire additional Russian data we might get stuck with slow hypersonic missile which Russkies will shoot down each time but we are not capable to detect theirs let alone to consider to shoot them down. Besides that what weapons do we have which are able to reliably shoot down supersonic missile let alone hypersonic? Patriot Pack 3 with 10 - 15% of real success rate (not a propaganda false data)? Common people get sober and rethink once again.

They have to be redesigned and rebuilt because some trigger mechanisms would not sustain frightening acceleration and would very likely trigger detonation. You can see how the USA is spending billions on " modernising" of their arsenal, which means that they destroy old weapons and rebuild new more effective with variable yield in order to preserve as much as possible land for later exploitation after occupation.
      Besides that Russia has only over 700 nuclear warheads deployable by ICBMs and that is the number allowed by START. Russia does not want to breach treaty by "modernising" nuclear arsenal as Americans do because they can do it with impunity. Russia has no leverage to force them to do anything because Russia is economically underdeveloped country and can be and will be easily badly hurt by sanctions. Russia will not start the nuclear war just because their economy collapse which is actually result of oligarchs and corrupt politicians looting Russia to the bone. That is why Russia needs thousands of hypersonic missiles to become relevant conventional military force which is now a light years away. By being conventional superpower the sheer number of weapons and other assets become very important.
      Russia is now technically and technologically the most formidable defence force. However, country's defence based on MAD doctrine cannot stop western sanctions because no one believe that nuclear war will be triggered because economic sanctions. It will be 100% conventional war because even looser still has chance to survive and recover destruction as we Germans and Japan can witness.
      No adult villain will ever attack a small child who has a suicide vest and holds trigger in hand no matter how many times is stronger than child. Now replace this child with grown adult but without suicide vest and you will see how all of a sudden villain will become aggressive and ready for fight in particular if he believes that he is stronger. He will probe his opponent to see if he can take him on or not. If the opponent is visibly more muscular with nonchalant posture which indicates massive degree of self confidence, villain will become unsure and very weary that he will be badly beaten if he continues with provocations.
      Hope you get picture why nukes are very bad idea and only conventional superiority will assure respect from opponents. That superiority is reflected by pondering efficiency of the military systems. For example; Russia has by any stretch of imagination the most formidable air defence systems and the USA has 20× more combat planes. This difference in planes does not gives any advantage to the NATO if Russia has absolute superiority in sheer number of the air defence systems. Unfortunately we cnow that this is not the case because the USA and NATO are rapidly increasing a number of very cheap armed drones.
      Now the serious problem with Russian defence is that if nukes are taken out of equation then it becomes very clear that Russia with handful of anti air missiles S-xxx and all other AA assets will be destroyed in a matter of hours because it has no money to build sufficient number of defence systems to prevent NATO from overwhelming Russian defence system with massive and cheap drone attacks. Imagine hundreds of drones with small bombs attacking Russian anti air defence posts and just by sheer number of chess drones they will easily destroy S-××× defence systems.
      Only way out of this pickle is to by force kidnap all of Russian oligarchs who are living abroadand and force them to return stolen money they hold abroad. Russian Central Bank has figures demonstrating that during Putin's rule oligarchs "exported" 2,4 trillion US $ and hold them on offshore bank accounts. This amount is 40× bigger than Russian annual military budget. Now ask yours how it was possible to happen if Putin during every election campaign promised to the Russian nation to deal with oligarchs and yet all that happened is that they become even richer than ever despite the fact that USSR did not have anyone who would be a multimillionaire and now has 101 extremely rich multi bilionaires and most of them are "close Putin's friends".

      "The GBI consists of a 3-stage solid rocket boost vehicle which can place it's payload of an Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle outside the earth's atmosphere. In order to do this the missile must reach an escape velocity of more than 6.9 miles per second. This hypersonic speed is several times what a 7.62mm bullet travels leaving the muzzle of a gun. Mach 9 converted to KM/S is about 3km/s. Say your target is 600km away, at 3km/s it will take 3:33 minutes to reach its target without taking the time it takes to reach max speed into account, so over 5 minutes, to which any crew will be able to see,track, shoot down, or move since hypersonic missiles can not maneuver in their terminal phase, even according to the zircons own patent. Hypersonic missiles are only good for first strikes, nuclear strikes, or short range under 200km, where you then have almost no time to defend.
      The design mode for the scramjet are high-altitude cruise conditions while maintaining the estimated cruise speed, and the need to reduce the altitude and flight speed creates difficult technical problems due to the fact that:
      an engine designed to perform a hypersonic mid-flight at high altitude is not able to continue to work at low-altitude trajectory sections associated with a decrease in the flight number M, hence, the rocket must approach the ground or surface target with an inactive engine;
      characteristics of sustainability and controllability of CRPD with inactive scramjet significantly deteriorate, loss of stability becomes possible;
      there is also a danger of destruction of the scramjet design due to the increase in pressure in the flow part of the engine while reducing the CMP from the march height before hitting the target."

      This is an aeroballistic rocket. Not winged. Completely different types of missiles.
