  • First Beatles song in ages! Happy to be getting back into making them! I had been struggling to think of a good song to return with, and in my opinion, this was a good start ;)
The song was recorded almost completely on the 3rd January 1970, before Phill Spector added the string and brass section in April. I decided to omit Spector's string and brass arrangement, as personally I prefer the sound of the Naked version! Although, one exception I made to the "Omitting Spector's work" rule was the lengthening of the band recording. When the song was recorded in January 1970, the runtime of the song was a mere 1:35. Spector was able to almost double the length of the track by simply taking the first Chorus of the recording, and adding it between the final verse and ending.
For my version, I recorded to a shortened version (1:30ish) which I created myself by removing the 2nd chorus entirely and simply pasting in the ending section. I then mixed the song to the shortened version, before copy and pasting my version of the chorus behind the 2nd verse, and syncing it with the Naked version of the recording! (Its complicated to explain, but very simple in action!)
I used as accurate of gear as I could (I even closed up the f-holes on my Casino with tape just for this! - kind of...). For George's Gibson J-200, I had to resort to using my only good acoustic, which I also used for Paul's accompanying guitar part!
For George's Casino guitar part, I decided to record directly into GarageBand. (I did this because it isn't verified whether George recorded this with his Twin Deluxe Reverb, or directly into the Abbey Road soundboard, so I decided to compromise by using a variation of the two - My guitar directly into GarageBand, with a similar digital amp to a Fender Deluxe Reverb amp.)
I didn't use much gain on the amp or overdrive pedals, I instead decided to overdrive the guitar's signal using my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, with the gain setting FAR overloaded (Not as much, however, as Revolution!!) Both of the Electric guitars were panned hard to left and right
For George and Paul's acoustic guitars, I mic'd with my Shure SM57 dynamic microphone, with added high end and a small amount of low!
For George's Rhythm part, I mic'd the guitar from around 6 inches away from the end of the fretboard. George's Rhythm was panned to the centre, with an occasional volume change in mixing, to prevent clipping.
For Paul and George's accompanying guitars, I mic'd them closer to the guitar, around 2-3 inches from the end of the fretboard, in order to get a clearer and fuller sound. Both guitars were panned hard to left and right.
I really hope that this was useful! If you enjoyed please consider subscribing so more people can enjoy the work I put into these recreations!
Thank you for watching and reading! - Luca :)

Outstanding job Luca! Absolutely nailed the casino tone with just the right amount of gain. It was a nice touch in the video that you taped up the f-holes (hope it was easy to take off). Also the acoustic sounded amazing. Overall the guitars sounded spot on, just like the recording!

Luckily it's just painted masking tape! So hopefully the adhesive isn't that strong! I'm very glad that you enjoyed luke! I might see if there's any more songs for the taped f holes 😉

I was expecting a more aggressive solo. Since the Epiphone Casino plays a rather aggressive solo on 'Let It Be' and 'I Me Mine' which a lot of people - myself included - believed to have been done on a Gibson Les Paul Standard. But what are you going to do? The fact that box-sealing tape was used to cover the ƒ-holes explains how the guitar was able to play like that without much risk of unnecessary feedback. And the fact that it was done on an Epiphone Casino explains how light the guitar sounds.
Since I feel that the guitar would have sounded like it weighed a lot more, had it been done on a Gibson Les Paul Standard. It's funny because the guitar solos on 'Let It Be' and 'I Me Mine' were one of the reasons I fell in love with the Gibson Les Paul Standard, which is my favourite electric guitar. Only to find that they were done on an Epiphone Casino, which is my favourite semi-acoustic guitar.

Yeah session pictures seem to deduce the guitar as being a Casino! :)

A for accuracy! I was honestly thrown for.a loop that George used the Casino on I Me Mine and Let It Be. Plus I'm with you that George probably ran his guitar directly into the soundboard. You probably wouldn't get that much gain on a Twin Reverb, and George didn't use pedals that much.

    • @c.syde65

I know right? It was widely believed that George Harrison used a Gibson Les Paul Standard to get that guitar sound on 'Let It Be' and 'I Me Mine'. I was among those who believed it. Since it doesn't sound like it was done on a guitar that is prone to feedback.
It was actually one of the things that made me fall in love with the Gibson Les Paul Standard in the first place. But it's all good since I love the Epiphone Casino as well.
And it explains why the guitar George used sounds so light. In contrast to the Gibson Les Paul Standard which is quite heavy.

@@c.syde65 Why George chose to tape up his Epiphone Casino instead of using his Gibson Les Paul is confusing to me too. I guess the Les Paul didn't have the sustain that he wanted. Also have you seen Chris Buck's video on how he got the tone for Let It Be? I find it quite convincing actually. I don't think he could have gotten that much distortion out of a 100-Watt Fender Twin Reverb without creating feedback, even with the f-holes taped down. I say he probably did use the Fuzz Face with the guitar rolled down to 7 or 8. Either that or he just ran his guitar into the soundboard, a la Revolution.

    • @c.syde65
      @c.syde65 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@elirosen1391 Yeah, I watched Chris Buck's video before watching this one. Not sure about sustain. But I've watched guitar covers of 'I Me Mine' where the Gibson Les Paul Standard is actually used. And something doesn't sound quite right. The Epiphone Casino has a brighter, crisper, and thinner sound. Which is ironic because it is a larger guitar. When I researched the Fender Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster, and Gibson Les Paul Standard, I discovered that the Gibson Les Paul Standard is reported to be heavier than the Fender Stratocaster and they are both reported to be heavier than the Fender Telecaster.
I also discovered that both the Fender Stratocaster and Fender Telecaster are reported to have a brighter tone than the Gibson Les Paul Standard which has a fat and dark tone. I knew something wasn't right. Because the lead guitar on 'I Me Mine' and the album mix of 'Let It Be' has quite a bright and thin tone. I'm not sure about thin tones, but I know the Gibson Les Paul Standard is capable of producing bright tones. Which is evident in songs like 'Yer Blues'.
You can definitely tell that the guitar used for the solo on 'I Me Mine' and the lead solo - since the lead solo heard on the single mix of 'Let It Be' can still be heard underneath the lead solo heard on the album mix if you listen closely, as well as the 'ghost' solo which can still be heard on both the single and album mixes if you listen closely - on the album mix of 'Let It Be' is definitely different from the guitars used to do the lead parts on the rest of the album. Because of its brighter and thinner tone.
