    I remember when I first started my clinicals for my CNA class I was taking. I wanted to be a CNA before starting the nursing program because I heard it would look good on a resume and I would gain some helpful skills as a nurse. I was so excited for my clinicals and I loved working as a CNA. The one thing that really bothered me was seeing the other CNA's and other nurses that didn't really care for the elders. It broke my heart. Yes, they can be stubborn and difficult at times but it still gives them no right to be rude towards them. Unfortunately, there's not much I can do but report the people who mistreat and abuse their position. I can also make an impact by treating everyone I help and assist with respect and kindness. You'll be an amazing nurse seeing how passionate you are about taking care of others, no matter where you work as a nurse!

    • @kiearacelina
      @kiearacelina  6 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thank you so much for sharing that.I myself have seen some cna’s mistreat the elderly and it is so hard to deal with people like that.Sometimes I get so tempted to just go off on some of my coworkers but I know the reality of the medical system,people really don’t care about the elderly,they have no voice and as much as I want to help them right now,I know I can’t do anything so all I can do is work my way up to the top so I can get myself to a position where I can actually take action instead of just talking.I really hope people become more aware about how the elderly are treated and start doing something because we can’t do it alone.

    • @foxfur8327
      @foxfur8327 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@lauralei400 , wow, you are speaking so truthfully about those working in the health field! It is the higher ups with job burnout who are most abusive and the most difficult to report without being fired yourself. Once read a book called "Coroner" and the author stated that if you want to remain a coroner, don't ever admit wrongful patient deaths! Millions are killed in hospitals and retirement homes due to neglect, abuse, and serious errors in medication, but these things are not reported because staff who want to report it also want to remain hireable. Talking staff are therefore not wanted and are far more likely to be fired than the abusive, neglectful, careless or drugged staff they reported, and yes, most of that abuse is aimed at the elderly. The only rule in the medical profession is, 'keep your mouth shut !" That's why the entire system is so dangerous, deadly and corrupt.

    I’ve worked both. My job in home care is to keep people out of the facility and in the comfort of their own homes because when you have 8-25 grandmas and grandpas (which is mostly what’s in the facilities) they tend to get less than an hour of your time in and 8-12 hour shift especially with the nursing shortage. Not all patients in home care are slow paced shifts, especially if you’re a self starter and aren’t afraid to work. Bad aids sit on their a$$ and play on their phones. Night shifts can be slow, since clients tend to sleep, but there’s slow moments at night in the facilities too. Home care might have you waiting a couple weeks for the right client to meet your schedule, but I’ve always picked my clients and my schedule. It’s the most versatile work schedule I’ve ever had. It’s foolish to pretend facilities are the same quality of care because in home care is one on one, but to suggest home care isn’t nursing experience is an insult to those in the industry. We use lifts, take vitals, feed people, bath people, dress people, transfer people, toilet people, help bed bound people, see people through their death, chart, and everything else you you might do in a facility. Ironically, I’ve also had home care clients that were in a facility because the quality of care can’t compare. I tell the cna on staff not to concern themselves with my client so they can divide their time among the rest, which I know they’re grateful for because I’ve been on that side of it too. Go where God calls you, but nursing is nursing, in the privacy of one’s home or in the facilities.

      Girl yes. I agree with 100% everything you said, she just don't seem to have experience or mindset coming into it to compare to. I've worked in home care & can back all that up.. Also grew up with my nurse mom who was lead RN for unit at a nursing home 20yrs. The care is unmatched with 1 on 1. Not because anyone is better than another just physically not possible in a facility like it is at home. Worked with hospice patient myself. It is def laid back but In depth care is necessary at any given time needed. I enjoy it. All people/nurses are different though & it over all takes special person to care for others like so.. I believe you’re mistaken home care with the kind of job you wish you had. Home care is caring for the person and doing home activities. Like Dusty cleaning feeding helping with bathing, etc. If you’re qualified, you should go to work in a hospital. Yes home care is like caring for your grandma, your grandpa, caring for a person who is in the same situation you will be when you get older. And I hope you are lucky to have help when you cannot walk anymore when you suffer with incontinence, when you forget your food on the stove, what do you need someone because you cannot take care of yourself anymore.

    Whether or not to work in home care depends on many factors. Chief among those factors is what type of client is the best fit for your skill set or specialty. Yes, there are a lot of supportive care and homemaker types of jobs that don't always utilize the skills we want to use. But there are also clients who are quadriplegics who require a bowel regimen, Hoyer lift, and straight catheter. Or bariatric patients that need help with skin care and mobility. And hospice patients that need assistance with managing their anxiety and restlessness. And Alzheimer's patients that need a compassionate and nuanced approach.
    I feel that the biggest problem with home care really is the agencies. When you are new to the field, they are not as inclined to send you to the best clients. And they take a lot of money off top. I think it's better to gain the experience first and determine what type of nursing is the best fit for you. Then later on, if or when you need a break from pounding the floors, you can return to private duty independently.
    Or, if you still want the secure of an institutional setting, you can work home care and go prn at your facility. The beauty of healthcare is that the options are endless.

I remember being a chha and i would just go to their house and sit there with them and watch tv, some people like getting paid to not do much work but if you want to work and feel more involved i would say to go a little further if you can. Yea I work as a hha. A lot of time I do get paid to watch tv, but it definitely is not an easy job. I can’t even tell you to amount of times I’ve been called stupid over not knowing where something was when Literally it was the first time I was in their house or something like that. There was always drama when there didn’t have to be. There were some easy going moments, but I definitely had to put up with a lot of unnecessary drama.

    It's no better in the hospitals. Actually it's way worse. At least in home health you have some control and autonomy....and you don't have to see entitled CNAs sitting on their phones at the nurse's station all night all up in the charge's face with every call light on the floor going off with NO SUPPORT from the charge or admin to do something about it. It will only get better when companies finally figure out that they need RNs WAY MORE than RNs need them.

    I agree that being a Personal Care Aide (Assistant) or a Certified Nurse Aide (Assistant) is completely different from nursing.
    While pursuing a BSN, I could see starting out as a PCA or CNA. After six months, level up and train as a Certified Medication Aide or Assistant. Once the nursing student is a sophomore, it’s time to level up again and work as a Certified Medical Assistant.
    I'm in the States, and the state I live in has strict requirements. You can't train as a Certified Medication Aide (Assistant) until you train as a Certified Nurse Aide (Assistant). Also, you must work six months as a CNA before being eligible to train as a Certified Medication Aide (Assistant).
    Most healthcare clinics and specialist clinics hire more Certified Medical Assistants than Registered Nurses. Because it's cheaper. PCA (Caregiver) is the only position for which my state does not have strict training requirements, a state testing exam, etc.

    Im from Saskatchewan and have been working as a CCA- Continuing Care Assistant, which would be quite similar to a CNA, for over 2 years now. Saskatchewan has Health regions and unions, there aren't really private nursing jobs that i am aware of. My first job in health care was in home care. There was high demand for morning and evening shifts, Getting people up in the morning and getting them to bed in the evening. When i would get to work, 4 hour shifts were quite normal, I would visit anywhere from 3 clients to 6 clients within that 4 hour window. Some visits were 15 minutes long where you would possibly check in on the person or you would administer their medications from a bubble pack which is a pre packed medication. Other visits were normally 30 minutes where you would get the person ready for bed, or if they were total care, in need of lifts like in the facilities of LTC you would help them get back to bed using a lift that was installed in their home. After working in homeware, which was honestly amazing, I wish I could get a job there again, I left to work in a LTC- Long Term Care facility because of hours. Anyways I will now be going into a practical nursing program in fall of 2018 and I truly believe that my experience with homecare has benefitted me greatly but that might also be because the way homecare in saskatchewan is set up is different than whichever province you're from. I hope that this reply has given you another perspective and I'm sad you didn't get the experience you were hoping for from homecare.

Getting insurance on your self find your clients and get paid thru Medicare jus like a provider would only you set your self up with your pay rate and hours and if it gets to be too much hire one or two ppl that ya know are good workers like someone ya have worked with. And eventually could turn into your independent business and have a few employees and it can expand . It is something that alot of people are getting into now cause how training is or how current places are treating them and over working them.. if you know what ya doing or have done home care for few years maybe look into it .that's what I'm doing . Good luck everyone..

    Hi I have been working as a CNA(in the UK we call the job Support Workers) and all I can say is its not what I thought it would be .My manager agreed to my working hours in interview and within weeks of working there she had changed them to all the shifts I told her I could not do ...because I have a small child and I couldn't work nights . She backtracked and said I had to put up with it which is completely unfair because she had agreed to my working hours in interview. The job itself is easy I work with disabled adults and there is not a lot to do after doing basic care and routines . My goal is to become a adult nurse I took the job because it said I can gain on the job qualifications which I can then go on to doing a degree in nursing. But my manager again is trying to tell me I cant do these qualifications even though saying I could in interview ..I'm glad I'm not the only person who disagrees with home care ..if my manager wont let me work my hours I'm going to quit my job tomorrow.

    I did homecare work for my stepdad for 14 years not one time did he purposely sit on his backside demanding are making me feel like a slave while I did everything for him it was my job you shouldn't do a job that you dont love . Homecare is not the same as being in a hospital it is totally a different environment even if my dad didn't think something needs to be cleaned and wanted me to just sit I would do it anyway because that was my job. When I was younger I did certified nursing in West Covina I didn't get to take the hospital client to do grocery with me I didn't get to take them with me to do laundry so don't downrate the client if you're feeling as if they just what a maid service or you're not doing enough. Every healthcare, homecare client has a different need more or less it's still your job. Do your job without grumbling or putting down your client. Don't do what you don't love doing.

    • @OneTwo-yw4ij
      @OneTwo-yw4ij ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're bias because it's your dad and you love him. Love covers a multitude of faults. And they even teach you in nursing school to keep the patient as independent as possible. Patients will stop doing things if they believe someone else will do it. We encourage patients to do as much as they possibly can for themselves so they don't lose mobility, develop bed sores or contractures. Experience muscle wasting, depression or helplessness. Getting a patient up to bathe, get dressed and move around to socialize. Contributes to maintaining a level autonomy, mobility, purpose and overall mental health.
      A person that lays in bed all day will also experience reduced motility of their bowels. No person will love every task. That doesn't mean they don't love patient care. Remember every state is different on what they expect of a caregiver/ CNA/ nurse. So your experience is just that, "your" experience. You need to understand that sometimes what may seem like compassion or, empathy is actually enabling.

      MelaninQueen596 people need to understand that the scope of a cna is different depending on you live. Cna’s where I live don’t do vitals or anything like that. Their only responsibility is to take care of activities of daily living .When I got the job my title was not home health aid it was certified nursing assistant .

    I’m a cna and work at a nursing home..for about 7 months ..is very stressful and physically demanding. I take care of about 7-8 patients at the same time. Almost everyday. So this sounds more laid back a + to me..so think I’ll do this part time.

      All depends on where you live.Its not common for places to let Cna’s do it but some do where I live and when I say wound care,I’m not saying advance wound care like packing a wound using a sterile method or anything but I did have a client who had diabetes and his foot ended up infected really bad so I was the one who had to soak it,clean it and bandage it.We did have a 2 day training with an Rn to be able to do it though.

    I work in home care with vented patients, tracheostomy patients, catheter care, medication administration, wound care, IV infusions, IM, Sub Q, glucometer testing and even more than you have mentioned. I have worked in a hospital and actually noticed that the patients I were discharging with home care needs were pretty complex. you did not seem to get a good experience with home care. There are actual issues with home care jobs but none were mentioned here in this video :/

      Yes I get that but you’re talking about your experience as a nurse. I was a CNA when I made this video and was talking about my experience as a cna in nursing school. I learned a lot more being in a hospital and I actually got to work closely with nurses and saw doctors, OT,PT,Radiology… a lot more. As someone who was studying to become a nurse, i wanted to be able to see the full dynamic of the entire medical team and it helped me develop my critical thinking skills a lot more. This also helped me write my board exam because I had a lot of experiences to reference back to that I wouldn’t of had working in home health as a cna because I rarely saw the nurses.I was always in & out and when I was ever at someone’s house for a full shift, the nurses were in & out a lot of the times too.

      @@kiearacelina, There is no point lol! They don't understand the difference between aides and nursing in the home. Those duties are different. No nurse will show up and clean your home. It's not apart of any care plan. In order for nurses to get paid their rate, they have to perform a skill every few hours. Cleaning house, chatting and running errands is not a nursing skill. However, caregivers and aides get paid a lower rate to perform those task. The home I work in has caregivers and nurses. The caregivers do laundry, cook, clean and restock supplies. The nurses administer meds, record vitals, call in prescription refills, apply assistive devices, perform PROM exercises, G-tube care, Neb txs, entering new MD orders, accompanying patient to appts, etc.
      We only clean up behind ourselves if we spill something and clean the equipment we used for the day. I do not return to homes with abled body adults that expect the nurse to come in and clean up after them. Just because I am hired to help one of the family members in the home. If I'm stepping over trash and having to clean everything in the patient area upon arrival, that's a "no" for me.

  • @vcmay626
    @vcmay626 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Home care is not a nursing job. Especially nor for swing and graveyard shifts. The only people who hire nurses for swing and graveyard shifts are ultra wealthy people hiring someone to take care of their grandma. and there are not many of those jobs available at all. Some people actually do that kind of work for a career and your video and others like it are really condescending to people who do this for a living and actually help people who need help. You are showing a lot of nativity for someone that has a nursing degree.

      hot pepper Well that is and extremely vague comment and although it is very possible A CNA working in home care would have to work ridiculous amount of hours to amount to that $1400 where as an RN would probably make that working their regular hours. hot pepper Like I said,you can’t speak for the whole world,that may be the case where you live but I’m most places,cna’s are NOT making 1400$ and if they are it’s because they’re working 7 days a week and doing overtime,nurses can make that doing they’re regular 3 12 hour shifts. Also being a nurse isn’t about name,cna’s are awesome but some people want more,they want to be involved in the persons health,actually learn and perform skills,develop great critical thinking and be part of actual life saving,that’s why we chose to become nurses,not because of the money but because some people don’t find enough satisfaction in only helping with activities of daily living.
