I first heard this sung by Jake McFarlane in a pub in Carletonville, South Africa, in 1976. He had a fantastic voice - and I've never forgotten this or 'Going up Camborne Hill, Coming Down'.

One of the best Cornish pub songs, how I miss those Friday nights

Love the harmonies! A Cornish lad who lives in the Netherlands sings this and I searched for other version and found this - glad I did!

I have searched for years to hear this sung well - thank you for listing it. I first heard it 50 years ago at The Engine Inn, Cripples Ease, Nancledra, near Penzance, when the legendary Jack House was the Landlord. They had a pub choir that sung on a Friday night, and they were brilliant!! Thank you to Jack House, Big Harry, Freddy Kernow, and all the other singers. I think they were on Opportunity Knocks - with Hughie Green. "I mean this most sincerely, folks". Only the "ancients" like me will remember this!

You will be amazed how many "ancients" there are. Thankyou for your comment. We try to keep the memory of Friday nights alive. Oll an Gwella.

A pilgrimage to Lamorna by all folks regardless of age, class or creed was made on foot on Good Friday every year, just to meet up with friends old and new. Happy memories of the old PCGS circa 1946/47. Anyone there?

I am really delighted to have this link to the Good Old Days. Proper choir - proper songs - professionally sung. I was in the Engine Inn last year because my cousin lives in New Mill, on the road from Penzance to Zennor. I have been down to this wonderful part of the country over the last fifty years, and stayed for long periods at Gulval, Lamorna, Porthcurno, Mousehole, Gurnard's Head, etc., etc., . These beautiful lilting songs will never fade - I just hope some modern "music" (like RAP) will. It raises my blood pressure !! Please continue with this wonderful tradition. I have all your youy Tube listings saved. I often wish I did not have to spend so much time in Northern England - not that I am not happy here - but it is 375 miles to the Engine Inn !!

New Mill is in Wales (I believe); there's a village (a hamlet, really) near Penzance called Newmill.

That's just about the poorest version on here... contrived/thought about and ruined.
