    Our drummer came up with a small "song" just for drum sound check. He uses it every time

    Oh my goshhh I needed this so bad. I’m 15 years and play in a church which does the same exact sound checking thing and it’s so awkward when they ask me to play full kit cause it’s so random. Great video it already sounds useful

    I had this at a festival, the others were taking a long time to set up the in ear monitors and mics etc and there was quite a crowd still as we hopped on straight after another band and I got asked to play the kit and I just played the intro to in bloom and the crowd went wild🤣

    Also, it’s good to play with the same energy that you’ll be playing at once the show gets started. Sound techs don’t like it when you play at low energy for the sound check, but in the actual show you go crazy and all their levels go into the red.

      Heck yes! I see SO many make this mistake. Check/hit each drum/cymbal/whatever the same way you will play when your energy is at 1000%.

    As a former FOH sound engineer I can say the most tricky part are toms. Kick, snare, hihat and overheads can all be balanced per song, but to get the Tom’s right so they are loud enough in the mix during the performance is challenging. Why? Because they are played less and the sound is short. And you have to set the gates in such a way that when the Tom’s are not played the Tom’s mics are muted enough, but open on time when needed. So for me playing the Tom’s during a soundcheck is the most critical. And from FOH is hard to see when the Tom’s are played.

    Great advice! You are so entertaining to learn from, Mike. And thank you Sarah for asking a question that hasn't been asked but really needed an answer.

    Back when I was playing a lot, I liked using the beat from "Use me" from Bill Withers. With some weird fills to grab the toms and cymbals.

    Haha, this is brilliant - Thought it was just me, been gigging for over 20 years and I always hate the sound check, I'll definitely use this, cheers Mike

    I’ll never forget the first gig I played where we had a legit sound check. I froze lmao.

      I usually go to a slowed down bonham-style triplet spread out around the kit

    😂😂 this idea is as funny as learning reanimation with "stayin alive" or "highway to hell" to have a good bpm for pumping.

    Great video! What drum kit is that. Did those sounds come with it or custom tunes/downloads? My electric set does not sound near as good

    I always hated sound checks but back then in the 90's I was the singer not the the drummer. Great sound check drum song Mike for sure!

    • @MikeBarnesDrums
      @MikeBarnesDrums  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did a gig recently where the singer shared that she's always more nervous for soundcheck than the actual gig! I actually think that's pretty common.

  • @jtwrally
    @jtwrally 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haha.... It's exactly me... Sound guy says "OK, now the whole kit please..." and that's the point the sound engineer wonders if I've ever played the drums before... ever.. It's a real rabbit in the headlights moment. Good tip...
