      Metal is fun to work with. I started making costume armor from aluminum shelves that I found on the side of the road and now I’m a full time blacksmith (15 years later but I was transitioning slowly).

    Suggestion for future such projects. Use detail painters tape beneath your primer, peel off areas after primer dries and etch where tape was.

    The advantage of using vinegar in metal cleaning or etching is the fact that it is acetic acid, and the acetate counter ion combines with metal oxides to form metal acetate complexes, and acetates are one of the most water soluble ionic forms of most transition metals!

  • @klausgerken1905
    @klausgerken1905 ปีที่แล้ว

    You should do a project with blackned iron. I love the look that a little lineseed oil and heat gives metal.

  • @TheLeatherBlacksmith
    @TheLeatherBlacksmith ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work! It turned out really well!
    A pedantic note: what you did is etching, not engraving. Engraving is a mechanical process, i.e. using cutting tools to carve away material, whereas etching, which you did, is a chemical process, using an etchant (acid or electrical current + electrolyte solution) to eat away the material.
    Regardless, good work!
    Edit:a typo

  • @Chris-gq8ts

    This looks amazing, great job!
    And if I may suggest an idea for a future episode, you should make a gambeson to match the pauldron (and any other amor pieces they you might get). When dealing with any metal armor you should have some padding underneath since it will not move at all, as opsed to leather stuff that has at least some bend to it.

  • @TheMichaellathrop

    So historically asymmetric pauldrons were definitely a thing, usually the big one was on the left shoulder to defend against strikes from a right handed opponent while the right shoulder was smaller to allow for maximum mobility of the weapon arm for a right handed fighter, so similar in conception to the spiral staircases in towers would block the swing of a right handed fighter climbing up the tower while leaving the weapon arm of the defenders unencumbered while fighting from the high ground.

    If you're looking to do dark armor, I'd look into metal bluing (or anodizing for fancy colors) that would be more durable than paint and adds Resistance to Acid Damage (rust/corrosion)

  • @thehollowbox

    Looks super! If you have a vinyl cutting machine, you can cut a stencil to put down for etching. You do have to be careful not to melt the vinyl, but it works well with designs that aren't too complex.

  • @coreyz.2800
    @coreyz.2800 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kinda thought you might try some electro-plating on this piece along with the etching. I'm still trying to gather info on how to electroplate specific areas while leaving other parts untouched, which will eventually lead to dual- and possibly even tri-tone electroplating, e.g. putting copper, brass, and nickel accents on a single piece of metal. Trickiest part is figuring out how to "mask" parts off with something that will survive the alkaline bath but still be simple to remove later without damaging the underlying surface.

    • @DH-xw6jp
      @DH-xw6jp ปีที่แล้ว

      Do it pretty much the same way he did this etching.
      For small parts you can use nail polish, which works really well.
      If you need larger areas covered any sort of acrylic paint should be sufficient to protect the metal.
      Then use a hand held electrode to target the specific areas needing plated.

    • @coreyz.2800
      @coreyz.2800 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DH-xw6jp the only electroplating method I know as far as DIY stuff involves a salt and vinegar solution "charged" by placing two pieces of the desired plating metal (say, nickel) hooked to an anode and cathode and then placed in opposite sides of the container, plug it in for a whole, unplug it, swap the "fodder metal" on the cathode with the piece to be plated, dunk it back in, plug it all in, and let it sit for a few minutes or more depending on desired thickness of the plating. Only having "theoretical" rather than "hands on" knowledge I have to wonder would nail polish dissolve or otherwise fail to shield the metal when submerged in essentially electrified acid, and would the paint suffer a similar fate? And if with/both hold up how would I go about removing the "shielding material" without risking damage to the plating? The specific project I have in mind would be plates for a championship title belt, cast from zinc and then plated with copper, brass, and/or nickel either individually or any combination thereof. I could cast and plate individual pieces and then try to stack them all together but 1) that means more hardware, 2) that means creating more prototypes and more molds, 3) I'd lose "real estate" upon which to create designs and patterns in order to make space for all that additional mounting hardware, and 4) it adds a complication in having to craft pieces that will line up properly after being cast flat and then formed into a curve to conform more comfortably to the wearer. The more individual pieces I have to puzzle together the more complicated each of those issues become, so it would overall be easier if I can nail down a reliable and not-too-labor-intensive method of multi-plating.

    Hi Kit, great video, love your chanelll (best chanell on youtube). I have some video ideas that could be cool, 1. make ink's or pigments with natural material (soot, white ash, coffea...) 2. make a wax tablet, it is a reusable writing devise that was used in medieval times 3. make pencils, with 30% soot/charcoal powder, 30% wax and 30% tree resin 4. make a retractible blade device similar to the one from assasin's creed. Hope this helps.

    Definitely look into bluing your steel instead of painting if you want it dark. I’m not sure what electroetching would do with blued steel, you might have to physically engrave your design. Or maybe not, I’ve never tried it.

    May I suggest using plastidip? I don’t know if it’ll work on the paint but because it’s like spray paint/plastic you can draw on it and if you are careful you can peel it off. I also love using an asymmetrical design for my characters! There’s something about it that is a bit addicting. And not just because I love chaos

    Would it be easier to do all the design work with the pieces separated? In the videos I've seen where people make the armor from scratch they usually do the designs before putting it all together and then maybe some details once it is all combined. For a project like this that's less precise it might not make a huge difference, but I feel like it would be helpful with something more intricate to just deal with one segment at a time
