Great tips. I once had access to a friend’s climate controlled cellar up north. It was a dream, not only because of the storage, but the fact we also would frequently hold wine dinners there. Now I’m down south and have all my wines split between two large wine fridges. It’s okay and better than nothing, but nothing like a legit cellar.

I think the reality is amongst collectors serious enough to need larger walk in cellars likely very few go with such a utilitarian style cellar though. A couple reasons for this, you touched upon a number of them. Large collectors are almost always affluent and with that generally live in fairly nice homes. These homes will have room for cellars and people want to build nicer showpiece cellars vs just a store room. Which I understand… i do know many people who simply don’t have the space (maybe they live in a condo etc, or they have so much wine they cannot fit it in their home, they use bulk offsite professional storage , which is incredibly expensive but has some advantages) I have both a very utilitarian very dark bulk storage area in my home which is climate controlled but then also a much more aesthetically appealing feature cellar in our entertaining area which holds about 400-500 bottles. I think it’s adds tremendous ambiance to the space and the wife also enjoys it. The dark bulk storage not so much! I do however get a bit of a laugh out of a lot of higher end real estate I see for sale that has a “wine cellar” which is a massive glass wall using single pane shower glass and being just drenched in light with no climate control!
