buzzfeed should start a $1 series
Ruchika Naik finally a topic that is relevant for me
방탄 X same here 😂😂
Ruchika Naik Dollar pizza!! 😍😍
They already have a $1 channel so why not.
Ruchika Naik the $1 series needs to happen. This episode is what it is to be American at its core. A mixing pot of culture in a major city. I would love to tour authentic food culture in New York with a proper native of all the different cultures
At desi events we don't have beer taps flowing, we have the chai tap flowing 24/7
so true
Shamaila Bajwah trueee
Lol
Shamaila Bajwah h
hahhahah trueee
Shamaila Bajwah true reeve ewe
Im glad Buzzfeed is paying attention to other ethnicities as well now. Its nice to see something like this
your totally wrong what will fools like you know that chai is made in pakistan kashmir and in india so is it not muslim. chai is for all
gaara u indian occupied kashmir to be presice.
@@prajwalnalige4008 muslim is a religion, not an ethnicity dude.
ahhh I suddenly miss my high school Indian classmate who would always share her mom's samosas with me whenever she has it for school lunch ;_;
oh man i could go for some samosas right now
same dude, same
You're so lucky, I would never share my precious gems, I mean samosas *cough cough*.
hahahaah well she knew how much I loved her mom's samosas :D
Mystearicia haha
In India we get 14 cups of tea for one dollar.
😐bro now here in Delhi only 7 cups.
Not really....they would be really small cups. Where are you getting these 5 rupee chais?
people talking like this kind of reminds me just how huge India is
They are pakistani not indian
In Saudi Arabia we get 4
One dollar for chai? In India, we get 6-10 cups of chai for that much 😂
Linkin Green Eminem lol that's really good tbh
Rude -_-
Linkin Green Eminem just cause you get 6-10 cups, that doesnt mean thats its better
Rahfy It's most definitely better. because it's originally from India. Just like a cheeseburger from USA will/should be better than one from India
yea...but this is America...
If you are Indian and you meet another Indian store owner in America you will get stuff for free....Some things in India will never change,Love my country!
Tanmay Umtol nvr has that happened to me
Tanmay Umtol they were Pakistani but thankfully it's a South Asian tradition of awesomeness! Enjoy your day x
Tanmay Umtol not always. And btw it is pretty unrespectful if you'll always accept it
@Tanmay Umtol, @radioactive ood, and @ EshaPatel EshaPatel
It depends on which state you are. I am a resident of SanFrancisco Bay area and south asian community is not as welcoming here of their other south asian people unless you know a store owner you know how we say "________ bhai or uncle se meri achchi salaam dua hai, discount mill jay ga yaar" you might say that to your friend
But when I visited NYC I was shocked how welcoming and at home feeling desi store and restaurant owners provided us with.
every Indian /Pakistani/ Bangali store I went to I got samples and free refills, extra stuff it was great.
Meeran Mamoon i live in idaho... so a no man's land :P
Where my fellow daily chai-drinkers at?
Shrey_Shrey Here!
KKAEBSONG AND YOU GOT NO JAMS omg Jimin 😂
Shrey_Shrey I'm Indian but I don't really drink chai. I drink it but like 1-2 times a month. I like coffee better
Shrey_Shrey right heyaaa
I rarely drink çay as i dont like the taste that much... maybe the çay we use is too strong. I dont like coffee either... but çay does sort of taste nice... sort of...
*watches while drinking Chai*

I see people complaining about racist comments, but I don't see any
your comment section is prob blinded of the racist
gh BVG v r because u came late before there was a lot
people just expect it even when it isn't there bc the rest of buzzfeeds videos are so bad, but this one was really nice it showed an in depth look into a foreign culture without being preachy or blatently condemning whites or males for existing
Right below your comment is a comment about suicide vests.
Muslims aren't a race. Ain't hating on browns, but rather followers of that disgusting cult called Islam.
"Chai Tea Latte" is so wrong. Really irks us Desis.
Chetas Das ifkr?
Chetas Das lol I'm Persian and it irks me too
Juliana P wat do Persians call tea chai?
Hassan Islam yes

zaincyole yessss
zaincyole CALM DOWN LOL
actually my dad's masala chai is way better than my mom's and mine is some where in between the two.
zaincyole maybe your moms not good dumbfuck
Jamil uncle speaks Punjabi, not Urdu.
But he is a Pakistani
Haris Altaf there are Punjabi people in Pakistan
Most punjabis are in Pak
Haris Altaf there's Punjab in Pakistan .My parents are from Lahore, Punjab and they speak punjabi with each other
Sameer Khan there’s a Punjab in Pakistan and India
I am neither muslim nor Asian but for some reason I've come back to watch this video countless times. There's just something about it. It's fascinating as well as heartwarming.
Also, it was my inspo for abandoning coffee for masala tea. Bless.
Interesting. We MUST have authentic chai like this here in Toronto. Time to hit up Google Maps...
Keith indian restaurants usually have tea that you can try
Keith Bro it's freezing outside
If anything Id think we would have some on queen west. If anyone knows of some places in Toronto, please tell me!
Rajdhani Sweets & Restaurant. Try this place
I suppose there are lots of Punjabi restraunts in Toronto you can get it anywhere.
lol one dollar mean 67 rupee 😂😂 we get one chai for 10 rupee 😂😂 thts expensive
Sweet Swathi We get one chai for 5 rupees.
Sweet Swathi minimum wage is also 11 dollars here.
wait is this zelda
a quarter in indira gandhi airport.
KKAEBSONG AND YOU GOT NO JAMS our local chai wala gives 10 I guess rate varies in different parts of india
Nothing can beat the karak chai served in a kulhad and that too for 6 times less than the dollar chai.
Kahan milti h aaj kal kulhad me chai :(
India. Chai sutta 💙
Namrata Singh accha? Sach me?
well there is a price difference between living in india and living in america. You have to feed your children. so yes, one dollar chai is pretty cheap especially for the NYC cost of living.
This was so so so great. I love how this was informative yet still entertaining for people that don't know a lot about south asian culture. I am south asian and I loved this because its so relatable and reminded me of my family. As silly as this sounds, representation, even in a short buzzfeed video about chai, is so important because it can bring lots of different people together. Thanks Ahmed!
Why do you say chai tea if chai already means tea, so every time you say chai tea you're actually saying tea tea
I wrote this before watching the video
Hamza Rehman It's because people like to say things they're more familiar with.
Most people in Europe or America wouldn't understand what Chai is and so they wouldn't buy it. But if you say "chai tea" then people will know that it's a tea and will feel comfortable to try and drink it.
it's the same reason why people will call Germany "germany" in English, and not Deutschland. We make things more familiar to ourselves.
+John Smith thanks man, your comment is appreciated
AARON BUCKLEY It's in all languages actually.
for example in Spanish speaking countries they call Germany "Alemania" instead of Deutschland.
literally every language does this. It's because not all languages translate perfectly into each other. Some sounds cannot come out of English, but they do in some other languages.
They wont understand just "chai" by it self. I think the picture on the boxed makes it obvious that it is a type of tea lol
its good that gandhi is still with us as a cab driver
Tan Serdar lol true
Chai is bae.. I am from India.. that espresso machine tea is not authentic.. the real magic is when you brew the tea on stove.. Chandani seems authentic.
they were using lipton tea its low Quality
Asamese or Darjeeling is the best
No one cares about the tea leaves if it has all the amazing spices boiled and tea brewed to perfection 😍
tanvi solanki I have to buy Red label tea in Beijing for 500 rs. 😒😒😒 at least is available. Phew
-"I'm Ahmed"
-Kulwinder: "ok......."
Lmfao
Thanks for showing me an aspect of my home city of which I was unaware. Pink tea! Who knew? Chai made on the stove or with an espresso machine! Who knew? I'll pop down to Chandni, Haandi, and Punjabi to broaden my life experience.
I wanna visit NYC just for these chai experiences lolol
My parents are Gujarati and in our house if you haven't had you chai you cant start your day , and if your feeling extra you put all the masala type stuff in ginger etc also need like the side stufff ghatiya chevro.
Chai is life...
ayy a fellow gujji
that's nothing, we have breakfast tea, lunch tea, evening tea, dinner tea and midnight tea 😂. if there are visitors, then guest tea too.
One two three what a community...
chai is my will to live
I'll just watch my comment get drowned in comments..
OK. I don't really care.
TrashBag cool
TrashBag Buttholes.
The cabbie was so cute!! I love these types of videos because not only is it interesting, it's nice to know that the cabbie had a day where he got to do something interesting and fun. Good job, Buzzfeed!

I'm just letting ya'll know, Chai isn't only from India, it's also from Bangladesh.
but they might taste different
JIN Nightcore bro Bangladesh is a descendant of India you know tht right?
Bro, just letting you know, India is a separate colonizer of West Bengal and Assam; those lands belong to Bangladesh. Bengal/Bangladesh has ALWAYS been a separate country from India. Let Bangladesh's independence today forever be a tron in your side, =)
Chinmay Parab So? They are already independent.
JIN Nightcore yay I speak bangla
are you from bangladesh? i call chai 'cha'
Watch all the racist comments come in

That pink tea looked so cool!! It was so much brighter pink than I thought it would be
Thank you Buzzfeed for exposing me to different food cultures. Yum!
we put zafaran in our chai..
that might be quite expensive
yea it is but we use it on special occasion..
hazzaa alameri that is really expensive. But I've tried it before and it's really good.
i just had almond milk at an Indian restaurant today and they put zafaran, almond, ginger, raisin and maybe some other spices that l dont know of. Its good when you drink cold 😁
It gives it a great rich flavour. Bless Karak and bless UAE ❤️
I wonder if Jamil kept the meter running lol
no he didnt in the reflection the meter was on offduty i drove cab in nyc and can tell you he didnt keep meter on, also they probably paid him and knew him as he called him uncle as a term of endearment.
as a Kenyan chai is so important and this video made me do happy
*so
Yes! I spent my childhood in Kenya and drank it every day after school with buttered bread (Blue Band).
Ivy Kerubo Ohh? You call tea 'chai' in Kenya too? I never knew that
Really short summary about the history behind the word "chai".
The word chai started in India which means tea. But years before that the mandarin chinese language had the word "cha" for tea (without the "i" at the end). "Chai" was mainly used in India (for a while) until it spread through the west part of asia (middle east) and so on. Just wanted to say this if anyone seems confused where the word is originally from.
Correct me if I said something wrong tho :)
Gujaratis use Cha instead of Chai. It would be interesting to see how that word came into use amongst them.
Man I love how they included the cab driver and took his reviews.
Hey random person scrolling through the comments! Hope you have a superb day and a great 2017 💚From a smaller TH-camr who's dream is to hit 7k subs 🎉🙏
💚🔥👌✅
Patrick Crawford So far, it's not happening. 😑
Thanks!
Patrick Crawford hey random person calling out to random people and telling them to have a great day, you have a great day too
Patrick Crawford I hope you ALL have a great day and a nice year ahead. Wish most TH-cam comments were like this. Hey we can try right!
damn those snacks with Chai. and isn't the pink Chai the "kashmiri tea"
yea, sheer chai. although kahwah is much better imo
K Yuh Kawah with almonds is the best
yeah
maham meher kashmiri chai or sheer chai or as it is actually known in kashmir as nun chai is supposed to be salty, definitely an acquired taste and completely different from 'regular' chai
Id love more of these types of videos btw.
Anyone else tragically hungry after watching that deliciousness?!?
Me and homesick rn
I'm not at the moment, I'm still fasting it's Ramadan for me.
Its really great to see a culture be able to build their own community within this country.
My parents drink chai 24/7 no literally 24/7
im so enjoying this kind of videooo
and do not read comments section, too many ignorant people
So is Chai black tea with milk and sugar? What's the difference between traditional Chai and what Westerners call Chai?
well green tea is also referred to as 'chai', so it doesn't have to be black tea in particular. the tea is usually prepared with milk but sugar is not a necessity.
Barbara Also you typically find elaichi chai which is cardomom chai. basically there are usually just a lot of spices.
But in the middle east, we also drink chai but most people does not add milk. We usually just drink it with sugar.
In India, Chai=Tea, point blank. If we need it with milk, we say 'doodh(milk) waali chai', which is essentially tea with milk, if we do not want milk, we say 'kaali chai', that is black tea. Then you have 'masala chai', which is tea with clove, cardamom and other spices. Chai is a pure generic term and is the exact translation of 'tea'. You can brand it with a suffix to make it however you want.
The main difference is that you cook it on the stove for a long time with the milk. Then the tea infuses really nicely with the milk and it all becomes really creamy and flavourful (especially if you add the spices too).
Thank you, Buzzfeed, for doing this!! US is about so many other cultures. And Chai is such a big part of our lives.
Someone understands my STRUGGLES
Chai= tea
Im desi and we honestly don't care how it taste or how much it cost, we just drink it, ya know? Does anyone get me?😂
oishi chowdury yes! Chai is love, chai is life

Liiinnaa Lynne why would you spell it like that if this video is about chai?
Hassan Islam lol idk because that is how we spell it where i am from but its sort of the same thing its tea , more of an arabic way though but its pernounced diffrently .. but does it matter how i spell it when i grew up with chai .. chaj or qaj .. or whatever all diffrent spelling but allpernounced the same way .. so???
Liiinnaa Lynne how will ppl kno wat ur on about if u spell it like that tho??
Hassan Islam true true . Sorry bout that but im just so used to spelling it that way lol its cool!
It's a shame that Islamophobia paints these hard working people in a negative light.
not necessarily true, majority of people who dislike islam really dislikes arab muslims, they don't usually don't care about other regions, as they don't like arab muslims either, Turks dont like them, south east asains don't like them, south pacific asains don't like them, It's b/c the Arab region is filled with radicals, and full islamic governments.
and it's a shame that Anti-antisemitism against jews paints those great people in a negative light by all muslims
okay devil dog
Annatar .....arrre, but islam is *CANCER* to humanity.
I love Pakistani and Indian culture 😍
Me too
This is Bangladeshi
Basically "pakistani" cuisine doesn't exist, it's all basically originated from the Indian subcontinent so it's "Indian cuisine".
Pakistan didnt even exist 50 yrs ago lel
Yeezy Pakistan existed 50 years ago. Try 75.
"Jamil Uncle" ... that's so cute!
klamchops UHM how
Uncle and Aunty are typical ways of addressing older men and women in the subcontinent.
Thank you for opening my eyes to the best cuisine in NYC! I can't wait to try it, and I can't believe I haven't seen this video until now.
Love the Allahu Akbar comments, like they are supposed to offend us Muslims or something. It means Allah is Great, I say this subconsciously a hundred times in a day.
Keep going guys.
It must've been so nice for the cab driver to drive around drinking chai and getting paid to do it
america is like the king of redundancies...matcha literally means green tea so matcha tea is green tea tea
Love Punjab Grocery and Deli, amazing food
Totally love Punjabi. Best food and great prices and friendly service
I'm a Bengalee and nothing pleases me more than a hot cup of strong liquor Darjeeling Tea with a bit of grated ginger, lime and no sugar but a bit of honey. That's heaven for me!
MORE FROM AHMED BUZZFEED!
To the person reading this-
Hope you have the BEST 2017 ☺️
You are fabulous, you got this ✨

Lemme just write that to just self advertise myself
Holly Sergeant THANKS B have an awesome day x
I'm not muslim but I'm hindu.... BUT CHAI IS THE BEST!! I grew up with it, and also mehndi, omgg
What does chai have to do with Hindu or Muslim
This makes me feel so warm. Its so cool to see our own people doing something of our cukture and stuff you know. Its just so cool to know what they are talking about and relate. I personally go to restaraunts and they will give you free pakuras and samosas and stuff and cha is just awesome... (cha is how it is pronounced)
That sardarji was so cute lmao.
"My name is Ahmed"
*while smiling* "OK"
who else is Bengali that drinks chai like me?
Any ginger chai lovers in the house?!☕️
no aada chai here bruh
Armaan Bath yess..during winters ❤
If you use Lipton to brew chai, you need to step your game up
Normally detest BuzzFeed videos, but this was very well-made. Not only is it an interesting culinary expose, but it's also a great insight into a community.
chai a hug in a cup. It warms your soul
Try filter coffee especially kumbakonam filter coffee, it's heavenly and the best coffee I have ever tasted, Starbucks will have run for the money if it gets launched in USA.
ginger red tea is my favourite.
nothing can beat that for me.
(not even coffee)
Indrani Das adrak ki chai *mouth starts drooling :D*
+Ashahar Parvez that means ginger tea right?
H C yes
chai means tea in swahili ( spoken in kenya, Africa) too but I think that's because the Indians were forced to come to East africa
Charlene Forced to? Nah there's something called trade. Just like how China is named 'China' but in Arabic its 'Sin' as the trading route passes India during the 'Qing' dynasty and Arabians couldn't pronounce Q and G properly.
Kewl I'm pretty sure arabic people came to East africa for trade and the Indians were forced to by the British to come
arabic people HAHA it's arab
The thing is, Chai is essentially a loan word in the English language and as with many loan words that are assimilated in to any language, it's not going to be used absolutely correctly as meanings can drift in translation/adoption process.
Ahmed:"Hi my name is Ahmed!"
Sikh Guy: "Okaaaaaaaaay"
Wtf is a "Chai-Tea"
the word chai means tea ffs
Sowrya Kasim Starbucks. Lol
Sowrya Kasim white people smh
It makes me so maddd
punjabi deli is the best place for indian food in new york..

Ryan Palani is that good or bad.?
Hassan Islam it's good
Ryan Palani until they pull out an ak47 and start shooting up the place
Ty bro glad the video opened your eyes :)
FisherMCboB ask someone that has a muslim friend
How their muslim friends treat them ?
FisherMCboB 7 dude all Muslims are not like that, I have a friend who Muslims
As a tea addict and foodie myself, this entire video looked DELICIOUS. Love it.
Ahmed needs to make more videos! Also, the foods in all the stalls look so appetizing! Plus, pink green tea??? what?!
But that wasn't urdu though @ 4:51. Sounded like punjabi
They're like the same language you know that right?
lmao no they're not at all. True punjabi sounds wayy different than urdu.
it indeed was punjabi.... Nd they both are way diffrent language
Shubham Singh Rawat i forgot to mention the fact that older people that come from a pakistani background speak urdu mixed with punjabi conjugation or words, my dad does it too so do my older relatives, aunties, and uncles its just a sort of act with wearing off language or bringing language to another level.
Urooj Mahmood whats the difference between urdu and punjabi?
Any other Desi that prefers coffee and gets judged big time?
Shivam Bhatt I prefer coffee but I don't get judged
South Indian Filter coffee for life!
We South Indians prefer coffee actually
Prefer? South India cannot function without it's coffee in the mornings(and a couple of more times during the day) and stronger spirits in the evenings :D
People be like "oh wow now you're trynna act rich huh?"
Where my chai lovers at ?
When in a rush, kettle tea does it...
But when your relaxing....
100% Milky Tea on the pot with a tad bit of spices is heaven...😍😍
I love this, BuzzFeed should do more NYC videos
I love that Buzzfeed has a muslim american podcast i honestly didn't know that
Punjabi chai is the best.
Shoutout to my Punjabi's 😝
It's chaa bro not Chai
Chaa nu pila
Harpreet Sanghera what's the difference between a Punjabi chai and a Gujrati chai, for instance? Chai has got ethnicities too? Lol
Roses are red
Violets are blue
I'm Punjabi and so are you
LETTHEGAME BEGINS dude I also thought that BUT it is spelled chai BUT I say it both ways chai and chaa anyways great to meet my fellow Punjab
And BTW... chai isn't even a Muslim thing! It's a South Asian thing. So it's basically a (Indian-Bangladeshi-Pakistani thing)... but I know it's majorly an Indian thing because UK conquered India and they gave us tea. But it still remains as a Pakistani thing!
K Shoker Yup! Although, a little correction on the originated in India thing. India and Pakistan used to be one nation ruled by the mughals. The mughals introduced chai because they thought it would bring strength to their army, but the British began pouring milk into it. It's a mix of all three countries :)
Pakistan was a creation by the brits for when the brits were leaving needed an military base.
This has to be the most useless comment that I have to had to correct....in like EVERRRR.
Ravi Garg u tell them! btw u are soooooooooo cute!😘😍🤗
Heyyy man we drink Chai too!
drank one today.
tbh as a indian am happy we separated
I don't know why but watching this just made me smile, more please
I love this video, so real, sincere IDK it has something so down to earth! love this, learned something new!
Whatever you say nothing will ever beat Indian cutting chai or masala chai
Tea&Milk... Nahh not my cup of tea
LEER OVER ISLAM got heeem
LEER OVER ISLAM try it and you are going to be addicted.
LEER OVER ISLAM You are right, put the milk and the tes where they belong, far away from each other. Deze mensen weten niet wat ze doen...
