It really was top 3 best show ever material. Extremely well picked cast with a great storyline. I really don’t think if anyone ever tried to remake it that it could be done properly.
I ACTUALLY mourned the cancellation. I was so invested in the characters, the mystery, the layers, the story and the inherent cohesiveness of the world. I still miss the show and the myth. Everything about it was just so immersive -the set design, acting, lighting, score... just beautiful.
I wrote so many nasty letters to HBO leading up to and after the season 2 finale. I will never forgive them. Unfortunately, the Sopranos was getting ALL the love at that time. Then they went and replaced this masterpiece with "rome" fucking trash

Then in season two, its mainly all about Ben and the carnival trying to catch up to Sophie and the Preacher. Urgh then the ending.. still hope they reboot this series. Also, that scene with Jonesy tarred.. cried my eyes out.
I watched both seasons for the first time this year and even though my bf felt it ended with closure I felt like it was just the beginning and I would like to see more

Still to this day it's my all time favorite show! My friends and I would get together every Sunday to watch both Carnivale and The Sopranos, cuz out here they aired back to back. I seriously couldn't believe it when I heard the news that HBO canceled it, and am still pissed off about it to this day!!

For me, Carnivàle is on my list all-time great shows. What a powerful *atmosphere*! It created a world which is still with me, in reveries and in deja-vu memory. It's so *well*- made, acted, produced, written, filmed, etc. I wish it could be revived (by Ben Hawkins?)
I loved Carnivale and couldn't believe HBO gave it the ax. It was so interesting and different, probably the general dumbed down audience can't handle a deep, thinking show like this. I do hope somewhere along the line some network reinstates this introspective gem.
Ya well HBO is pretty much being destroyed as a brand by Discovery/Warner Brothers since the acquisition. They canceled and removed several amazing shows cuz they didn't want to pay residuals to the actors and creators. They also own TNT now, they canceled snowpiercer as well and they already made the fourth season! Like that shitty Batgirl movie HBO max made it will never be broadcast or shown even tho it's been filmed and ready for the audience.
My roommate and I were big fans of Canivale when it initially aired, and aside from the first couple episodes we watched them all on their premier. We were both extremely disappointed when we learned the show had been cancelled. I'd love to see the series continue.
I felt like I could be part of the crew. I would have been an artist and a part time card reader. I'd be selling various trinkets like talisman, and charms. Might even teach witchcraft to the more curious clients. The use of tarot card imagery in the opening just takes me in immersive every episode. I've seen such traveling carnival bands throughout the world and in various era (in my dreams, that is).
just binge watched the 1st season on dvd (found at a thrift store). It had it's strengths and weaknesses. Loved the landscapes and photography. The characters were complex and after listening to your explanations I understand more why it was taking so long to develop. I had never heard of this show and regret it wasn't finished. Thanks

The incredible well written dark show needed another season, since basically from the get go, the show's main storyline was the anticipation of a face to face battle between Ben and Brother Justin. So I was extremely disappointed that HBO canceled the show. To create such a build up throughout the two seasons of a face to face battle between Ben and Brother Justin, then to end the series the way that it did without a face to face battle, was a huge head scratcher for me.
I LOVE Carnivale! It's definitely one of my favorite shows, only second to Twin Peaks: The Return. Thanks for talking about what would have happened had it continued. I didn't know that. This show was groundbreaking. Far ahead of it's time I was a teenager when it came out and I still miss it. I just rewatched it again and my feelings haven't changed....gone too soon just like twin peaks
Just watched again on 'Binge' AU 2021. I think this show was ahead of its time. Remember a Decade Plus Ago when missing an episode was a death sentence as far as following a plot was concerned? With Television Streaming as it exists now, These shows would Last Forever. Carnivale, Firefly, Etc. So Please HBO give us another season, or at least a movie to tie up the loose ends like you did with Deadwood. The old fans are out there and the show hasn't aged when gaining new fans.
I loved Carnivale, saw it on it's first run in 2003-2004. Full disclosure: I'm not a religious man, but I have no problem with people who are. One thing that kind of bothered me in the show was the inverting of logic regarding Ben and Justin. Justin was a truly good man, believed in his faith, cared about people and did what he could to help them. He was betrayed by everyone, captured and tortured in the asylum and turned into the bad guy. Ben, on the other hand, was a thief, liar, nasty, completely self obsessed, antisocial, blaspheming multiple murderer who leaves desolation and death in his wake but he's the good guy? That makes no sense and is a rather strange somewhat perverse way of looking at things. Some of the cast might not come back but I think that many could and Clancy Brown would have to return as Justin.
I do remember reading that it was cancelled because of budget problems. Unfortunately, shows like this ( ones that go deep into their characters) take time to build serious viewership and HBO felt like they were over spending, what a shame. .What a great story line and what terrific actors, both known and unknown. HBO was running some of TV's top shows back then; Sopranos,The Wire, Larry Sanders,WOW, what a lineup. They say 2 more seasons were already written . We can only imagine how great another 24 episode's would have been. Again, a real shame.

I just started watching this show and yes, am obsessed. I'm only on season 1, episode 9, but the most disturbing scene to me so far is when Dora Mae's ghost appears on the window. It was chilling and I felt so much pain for her. I knew those minors were dead the moment I saw them. The only thing bugging me is the guy who worked in the bar that Samson killed... was he already dead too? And, why could he leave the town. In one scene he says something like "he's always leaving but can never get out??" Anyway one know the answer??
I hope the show comes back.........It is one of the most intriguing show I have ever seen and I miss it. Everything from camera work, sets, scripts, acting etc. was perfect except for one aspect, the prop person missed the fact that Lucky Strike Cigarettes did not change to a white package until 1940.
I also think the advertising was off with this show. I remember seeing ads for it and thinking it was just a carny show. Not until years later, when I finally watched it, did I realize how creative and great it was. The evil and good avatars, how they repeat all throughout history, how dark and twisted the Brother Justin stuff went, the crazy lore, etc. I feel like they didn't know how to advertise this, so they just didn't bother and nobody really knew how great this was. But I agree with other comments as well - this show was way ahead of it's time. If it was on today, I feel like HBO would be able to really go balls to the wall with this show and embrace the weirdness. I hope itll come back someday, the actors are all still around. I stopped watching shows on hbo unless it had four or more seasons done and seemed destined to finish. Thats is one thing i like about British tv, they might have short runs of shows but they wrap the story up in 30 or less episodes usually.

Because of COVID, I found myself watching old, old shows and came across Carnivale and LOVED it. Such great writing and acting; so imaginative. I can't say enough good about it. But, since it was taped so long ago, they might be better off doing some kind of a prequel and show older avatars from the nineteenth century or some such.
That would of been so great! At least a movie to sum it all up like they did with Deadwood! HBO has always been ahead of its time! Crazy how shows that are 3 seasons or lower, are really the dopest ones!

I just got done watching this Excellent show !! I watched it the first time it came out but didn’t see the last few episodes ! What a jip they cancelled it just when it was getting Really Good!!! I read people were so upset that 50,000 complaints were sent to HBO ! They said production was too expensive and etc... excuses 🙄 They also rose the question of another network picking up the series. But HBO owns all the rights and wouldn’t give it up !! You would think they would do it again to the end ! It’s so fitting for this evil world 🌍 right now ! Having it continue would be awesome, but having it do so on TV after so many years off the air I'm not so sure it would be possible, I think maybe what's called for here is that the show continue through another medium, like maybe someone could do it as a comic book series using what the show had planned as a basis. I also think that the art should be done by ether Attila Futaki, who did a fantastic job on the comic Severed, or Mike Perkins, if you ever saw his work on The Stand adaptation you'd see his work would lend itself perfectly to the gritty story of Carnivale, ether one would be excellent. That's my opinion on the subject at least.

I was a bit confused about the overall plot. I understood the end. Of revealing the preacher as being evil. Attempting to kill him and he was Sophie's real dad But didnt understand the significance of Scutter/Scudder and the preacher.
So the ending is basically opening when Samson talks about how the (their) world ended after the Trinity -> atomic bomb. I hope they would make other seasons (for like HBO Max) and finish the story, maybe jump the time difference and move it to cold war instead to use the same actors aged. They could do something cool with Stanislav Petrov a guy who prevented WW3 being that child?
Carnivale, Rome, the Leftovers, Deadwood. These are consistently ranked as some of the best shows HBO has ever produced, and I think they were all cancelled too early. And some for the same reasons - like Rome was also expensive and viewership. The sad thing is just the timing of it all. In 2023 it feels like folks would eat a show like Carnivale up, that it would be super popular. And same with Rome which was basically GOT before GOT came out.
It is NOT about light and darkness....it is ONLY about Good & Evil because the light is blinding you and brings Destruction, while the dark is giving you Peace ,Calm and Rest...
Lizard Boy? He was called Gecko. Ben is not an "average every day person". Also, Samson sums up the entire story of the show in the first couple of minutes of the first episode. We already know this is not a story about the end of the world, but a story about the end of this particular war between these creatures of light and dark.

He is out and doing much better. A few new movies in the works and was recently in Fear The Walking Dead.

I miss this show so much!! I just rewatched the first two seasons and so sad it doesn’t go on I’m sure they might have to get a new cast but it would be worth it!!!!!!
After “Penny Dreadful”and “American Horror Story,”I cant see why they wouldn’t bring this back.

So what is similar to Carniavale in terms of symbolism, religious and esoteric aspects on movies and series with such depth?
Because of COVID, I found myself watching old, old shows and came across Carnivale and LOVED it. Such great writing and acting; so imaginative. I can't say enough good about it. But, since it was taped so long ago, they might be better off doing some kind of a prequel and show older avatars from the nineteenth century or some such.
This show along with The Leftovers were ahead of their era!
Carnivale is the best show of the world.

During a cast reunion. One of them said they'll never be another season. Even though the final scenes left it possible.
I loved it also. it might be loo late to finish it, the actors are/will be 20 years older now when if by chance it gets picked up
If I won the lottery, you bet I'd spend every cent of it on having another season made. So much love for this show and all the cast. They put in so much effort.

But don't just comment here - get on Twitter and tag Netflix and Amazon with your tthoughts. I think those are the two most likely to make it happen. Send them an e-mail. They do pay attention to fan demand for series!
omg I almost wish I had not seen this video. Now I am extra sad that they didn't continue it. I have always loved it and bought all the episodes on iTunes many many years ago so I always have them to watch.

I just got done watching this Excellent show !! I watched it the first time it came out but didn’t see the last few episodes ! What a jip they cancelled it just when it was getting Really Good!!! I read people were so upset that 50,000 complaints were sent to HBO ! They said production was too expensive and etc... excuses 🙄 They also rose the question of another network picking up the series. But HBO owns all the rights and wouldn’t give it up !! You would think they would do it again to the end ! It’s so fitting for this evil world 🌍 right now ! Anywho , 1 of the best shows Ive ever watched !!!! 👍

Having it continue would be awesome, but having it do so on TV after so many years off the air I'm not so sure it would be possible, I think maybe what's called for here is that the show continue through another medium, like maybe someone could do it as a comic book series using what the show had planned as a basis. I also think that the art should be done by ether Attila Futaki, who did a fantastic job on the comic Severed, or Mike Perkins, if you ever saw his work on The Stand adaptation you'd see his work would lend itself perfectly to the gritty story of Carnivale, ether one would be excellent.
That's my opinion on the subject at least.

I was a bit confused about the overall plot. I understood the end. Of revealing the preacher as being evil. Attempting to kill him and he was Sophie's real dad
But didnt understand the significance of Scutter/Scudder and the preacher.
So the ending is basically opening when Samson talks about how the (their) world ended after the Trinity -> atomic bomb. I hope they would make other seasons (for like HBO Max) and finish the story, maybe jump the time difference and move it to cold war instead to use the same actors aged. They could do something cool with Stanislav Petrov a guy who prevented WW3 being that child?
Carnivale, Rome, the Leftovers, Deadwood. These are consistently ranked as some of the best shows HBO has ever produced, and I think they were all cancelled too early. And some for the same reasons - like Rome was also expensive and viewership.
The sad thing is just the timing of it all. In 2023 it feels like folks would eat a show like Carnivale up, that it would be super popular. And same with Rome which was basically GOT before GOT came out.
It is NOT about light and darkness....it is ONLY about Good & Evil because the light is blinding you and brings Destruction, while the dark is giving you Peace ,Calm and Rest...
Also love how this set the tone for the AHS Season

Lizard Boy? He was called Gecko. Ben is not an "average every day person". Also, Samson sums up the entire story of the show in the first couple of minutes of the first episode. We already know this is not a story about the end of the world, but a story about the end of this particular war between these creatures of light and dark.

I think the show was cancelled for exposing some very real truths and made a few Hollywood Execs uncomfortable.
