This is not fore-edge painting though. Fore-edge painting is not visible until you feather the pages. The rest of the time, the head, tail and fore edges simply look gilded. That is the beauty of fore-edge painting - they are hidden, waiting to surprise and delight you.
It is painted on the fore-edge of the book. What you describe is called "hidden fore edge-painting". Both fall under the more general category of fore-edge painting.

if you have a look at the original four edge printed books, they are all printed with gold edges, and you cannot see the painting until you scroll the pages. they are not printed on flat edges.
Medieval fore edge painting was often done in this way. Hidden fore-edge wasn't common until later (after paper and printing press became more common). The craft has a deep and rich history.

Used to do this sort of drawing all the time back in school. Of course, my teachers would scold me for vandalizing my books but eh, I did it anyway😅

I use a whole piece of paper and create masterpiece city scenes and I haven't went viral so whatever.
Yeah, you're using a flat surface just like every other artist while this takes a special skillset. You only go viral if you're work stands out.
