The most cruel thing when it comes to stuttering is that when u stutter in your class... Almost all children will laugh at you... This makes them feel more shy to talk or ask questions from teacher

Whoever is going to read this comment in future, I want to share that I am a stutterer since my childhood. I too felt ashamed and embarrassed. But, one day I decided that I won't allow stuttering to make my life horrible. So, I changed my perspective and saw stuttering as a thing which makes me unique than others around me. And after that, I had been growing and developing my communication and social skills. Life can be changed with a slight change in your thinking. You will be more confident and stutter less too. Good luck to all.

Everyone is here for themselves or for someone they care about. So I want you to spend just 30 seconds reading this comment, please (I insist). I stutter too, but I kinda have figured out how to control it. So what you have to do is just before you start any conversation just take a deep breath and don't forget this because this is the most important thing. The next step is to start the conversations slowly and not focus on stammer, focus on breathing, and speaking slowly (this helps me a lot). And taking a pause between sentences is necessary. And don't expect instant results, for me it took 2-3 days to implement it and make it a habit. It's worth a try.

It will heal itself by age .
    Now am 21 .
    Still having this problem .
Yes the doctor was right .
It gradually decreased with time .
Bt still not gone completely .
I stutter in the statring and many times i get stuck .
Words are not coming out .
Its very less almost nothing when i talk to my freinds .
Bt i can happen again .
Frankly telling people used to called me hakla ( stutterer ) .
I always dreamed to speak fluently as everyone .
    Just having insecurities .
    I accepted that i stutter .
    Bt whenever i stuck .
I dont feel bad now .
Coz it has became a part of me .
Just want to get rid totally .
Bt as its my golden age .
It can cause trouble in my professional carrier .
Bt till now i think my works speak louder than my words .

Another great technique is to look at a mirror and talk to your self. Concentrate on your mouth and lip area, observing how your mouth especially the lip movements ; opening and closing as you speak.
By doing this exercise a stuttering person can stop the physical side of stutter by learning to open mouth wider and speaking at a slower pace when speaking. The mirror will act as a guide.
This will have to be done every day for 10 - 15 mins and you will see improvements.
I find this works for me.

When i told him about it he tried it right away! i almost cried watching him light up as he spoke without stuttering! I felt such a sense of relief and reassurance that he's going to be ok. All day he used his little hands to tap on his belly, a table or thighs to talk. In just the 1st moment of trying it, he felt so much better! His confidence sparked and he didn't give up at all trying to say everything. I'm beyond words. Thank you so much for sharing and helping my boy!

Your mind lies to you it says: You can't speak it properly, you can't go on any more you don't have the energy, it is not meant for you bla bla, and the solution to it is you must thank it for it's opinion and move on . So start thinking positive from today.

    Hi Patricia,
Thanks for that exercise, I will try to implement this in my day to day life and see if it helps me to improvise.
To the people in the comments below, I want to share my story and just tell them be patient. I have been stuttering since childhood, today I am 23 and I still stutter. Not one day goes by when I don’t think of this struggle, each day is a challenge. The only thing I heard till age 22 in my university and life that you wont get a job if you stutter. My first internship interview for Barclays, I may have been more skilled than others but couldn’t even speak out to the interviewer and had a panic attack. Result Rejected. After a year for full time, again sat for interview at Barclays, got rejected again. At this stage of life I felt I was at the lowest. Next week came Microsoft, this time I decided to say out front, “Please dont consider my stuttering as my weakness”, and what do you know, I got the job!!! At that point of time, the only thing I wished was to go back in past and tell the younger me that its gonna be just fine, just relax. One thing I have learnt is, dont try to hide it, say it out front, please bear with me, I stutter. I know its more difficult to do than say, but practice of this attitude will really help you live a more fulfilled life. Still in my day to day job I feel the same challenge to have calls with clients & colleagues, but people are more understanding and supportive than you might think. Be Happy, Cheers!

@@lizighonghadze8253, I lived that life too. I discovered a trick that helped a lot. At the beginning of the semester I would have a meeting with each teacher and just let them know about my stuttering. Most teachers don't know ANYTHING about stuttering so in that conversation I was actually the expert. I had a little handout about stuttering and how it affected my behavior in class. Things like "I will never raise my hand to answer a question because I know I'm going to stutter. I also know people will then laugh at me." or "I will never volunteer to read anything out loud because I will stutter and people will laugh at me." and "Giving oral presentations is incredibly difficult for me because of the anxiety. I know I'm going to stutter, I know people will laugh. If I need to give an oral presentation I would rather do it for you alone rather than in front of the class." Just things to educate them. The amazing thing is that once the teacher knew about my stuttering, and my fears about it, they would be on my side. They would help me. The anxiety relief was incredible. I wish I had found this process earlier because it made school more bearable. Best wishes to you!

I stuttered as a child and I was very embarrassed and torn apart inside. I went to my father and said that I need help for stuttering and he said to me whenever you feel you're going to stutter just whistle. I thought to myself what do you want me to get my ass kicked along with being embarrassed. I never asked him any thing again and I don't know how but for the most part I fought through it I taught myself to avoid certain words which would trigger me . Still to this day there are words that I cannot say and I do not know why but among them are vacation and Virginia. So I have a learned just to avoid words like that and I always say I'm going to VA beach. Or I'm going on vacay. Most people would never know that I stuttered so badly as a child and I'm in my mid seventies now. My heart goes out to any anyone, child or adult that has this problem. It's not repetition stutter it's like the first letter won't come out (mostly E sound or A and k ..etc) now at 26 i still have the same problem, the way I make it less obvious (it became unconscious habit) is to put filler word between the difficult sounds, sometimes i just act like i forgot what i wanted to say and just move on.

Also just remember your stammering is not a problem."You can speak "just focus on this line not on your stammering. If you think that your glass is half empty think again cuz your glass is half full 😉. Believe me when you accept your stammering and you start to live your life with this acceptance that day you feel and you act a way better and you don't hesitate to talk to others

Hey all I am Ashru and I stutter😪. I stutter when I talk to others, even when I talk to my friends, even to my parents or in family talks. I don't know why I stutter when I am talking to others. Normally I talk good. I can give a a long fluent speech to myself, but can't talk to others with the same flow. I don't understand what causes such anxiety that blocks my words. I even couldn't speek my name infront of the class. I feel ashamed for stammering.
But, Now I understood more than 70 million people stutter world wide. And it happens to every children at some stage of life. Some gets over it, some couldn't. And unfortunately I am on of those stuck kids who feel a lot of tension while talking to others, bcz I think I will stutter and everyone will laugh at me. And that pre-owned thought kills my confidence always.
But now I will say. I will try to complete my sentence and if I get stock, and someone laughed I am gonna rip his throat.👻

Excellent, an SLP who understands the impact of our nervous system on communication. Doing the breathing exercises is a form of simple meditation where your attention is focused on the activity and nothing else. Focused attention is also a key element of learning so DON'T WASTE IT. As you get competent at the breathing focus your attention on the exhale by exhaling through the mouth and the feel the relaxation it can bring to the lips and tongue. Forget the cookies start mouthing or whispering the difficult ones such as your name etc. as you exhale and feel the difference between a relaxed easy onset and blocking. Practised regularly your brain takes note and changes through self directed neuroplasticity.

I really needed this.... I have a major problem with stuttering. I just don't get it, I don't stutter when I'm giving a speech to a large crowd, not even when I'm nervous...... when I'm nervous I even seem to speak calmer ... I only stutter when I'm with my friends or boys.....
    I have no idea why...

    • @YTGamerr95
      @YTGamerr95 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Yes, same situation, I am having this problem as well. I was thinking about it and came to conclusion that when I talk with family or friends I get more relaxed and I stop trying to talk perfectly fluent so I stutter more. But when I talk with people I dont know or with people I am nervous about, stuttering go partly away as I am trying to talk slowly and with more precision. It stil sucks tho.

I’m 21 years old. I’ve stuttered since I can remember really. It’s so hard it’s extremely hard to build the confidence to speak in a day to day basis. I can’t even order food from my favorite food place. I make my girlfriend to it for me! I don’t have a super extreme stutter but it’s more than enough to effect my emotions really bad. I have extreme low self of steem and my confidence is non existent. I have a lot of blockers and I have a regular “gu-gu-gu-gun!” Type. And I have one (it’s kinda funny) it’s a trigger word with an H and it sounds like I’m trying to get someone to smell my breath and I just cannot finish the rest of the word. Every time I stutter I rub the back of my head. The feeling of my stutter is a extremely tight feeling in my chest almost. Sorry for the large comment I just have never found a community to open up to. I’m extremely tired people who just think “so you’re just scared to talk on the phone or something?” No, I’m too scared to go to the bank and talk to a teller to deposit my check and pay my bills to support my 2 year old son my girlfriend and my dog and my truck. (Really love the truck) it’s hard to just speak. No one knows how hard it is to be able to speak, but not speak well at all. People look at you so stupid all the time no one takes me seriously and cops always think I’m lying!!! Love all my stutter brothers and sisters. Hope everyone’s life’s get a little easier. This condition needs a little more popularity in my opinion

For some strange reason, i stutter when talking to family or on the phone, but when giving a speech in college and answering questions after the speech, or talking to people at my old management job and leading store walks, i can talk without skipping a beat. For me i think its the thought that someone will cut me off while talking. Like speaking on the phone o cant stand people that say "hello? Hello? You there?" Without giving me time to speak. It works my nerves and makes me so anxious.
I just landed a career in the field ive been going to school for as an hvac tech, and while doing ride-alongs i realised i will have to speak on the phone a LOT and explain stuff to clients. Usually after speaking over and over again on the same topic, i gain confidence and have no trouble speaking at all but it's still pretty scary knowing i'll eventually have to work through it.
Another thing that helps me calm my nerves and not being scared to stutter. Like just think to myself "ok if i stutter its not the end of the world." Because when im about to speak and i think "dint stutter, dont stutter.." I cant focus on what i want to say, causing me to stutter.
Also try to speak in different tones. Like rhythmically. Since i dont stutter when singing i found that emphasizing on certain words and raising the pitch on certain words and talking with my hands, i can speak more fluently than just speaking in a monotone manner. Hope this helps

One of my biggest struggles with having a stutter is not being able to say or not having the confidence to say what you're thinking. For me, this often comes up in a classroom setting, or any type of learning to set, and I have a question to ask or something to add, but I don't have the confidence to speak up due to my stutter. It's really a shame since I know everybody who stutters feels the same way, and everybody has been in those sorts of situations before.

Dear Julie, I wish you well. I am 66 and British. I used to have an awful stammer and I struggled with it for years. People say how much improved it is now. It only crops up now if I'm stressed. It's like you're wrestling with yourself. I went through a lot without going into details. I sort of learnt to pace myself and to be around the right sort of people. I have heard how some people with stammers can get up on stage and it just evaporates. One thing about having a stutter is how you/I would avoid certain words which forces you to look for alternatives. Please keep on trying for jobs, breath in and relax and try to think,What the he'll if I don't get the job! Easier said than done I know . I wish you well Julie in all your endeavours from the bottom of my heart. You are a great woman and you will find your way. Believe in yourself. Best Regards Robin Witting

The support on here is a beautiful thing to see. I have stuttered as long as I can remember. 40 now and it has improved a ton since I was a child. Still present and shows up most when I am exhausted.
I will say years of practices and exercises have helped. When I stay on top of them opposed to getting lazy with them, I can clearly see the difference in my speech.
Question for my fellow stuttering peeps. Can anyone else when they are talking see a few words ahead that are about to come out of your mouth? Specifically, I can tell when a word will be difficult to come out for whatever reason right before it leaves my mouth. Well most of the time. It's taken decades, but I can now sense trouble coming, take a brief pause to figure another word to use or another phrase all together. The listener usually is none the wiser that I switched things up to avoid stuttering. I call it my secret power.

I know someone who experiences stammering who never ceases to amaze me. In the past he has struggled with social and emotional issues related to his communication, as well as used avoidance strategies, but he now self-identifies his "stammer" in new communication situations, which preps the listener and reduces the stigma he perceives. He went from a job software development to marketing and product development, which means he's speaking all the time to a myriad of people and he's extremely socially active ! I've been practicing mindfulness strategies as well with him, as there is a huge emotional aspect for those who experience dysfluency. He's rewriting the negative narrative he has about his communication abilities to positive ones, gently and positively. The social and speaking anxiety is still there but it doesn't stop him. I love that! Those of you out there that struggle with this as well, have heart and find a speech language pathologist/therapist to work with that incorporates ACT mindfulness into their therapy!
