This two-week carnival is celebrated at the beginning of the year, the weekend before Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of Lent. The festivities begin with a competition at the theatre of Gran Teatro de Falla which goes on for three weeks prior to the carnival. It’s the grand finale, always celebrated on a Friday, is what begins the combustion as the actual celebrations start right after.
