  • I hate it when I leave my butterfly or moth specimens in my rehydration chamber a little too long and they start growing mold on them! I have ruined many specimens of beautiful insects this way. To remedy this problem, I use a chemical named Chlorocresol. Add just a little bit of this stuff into your rehydration chamber or Tupperware and it will keep your specimens from growing nasty fungus.

You can use acetone to remove mould from specimens, even fragile mounted lepidoptera can be soaked in it to remove mould. Game changer for me, I have the memory of a fish and sometimes forget to store vials of specimens properly after a field day only to find mouldy specimens a few days later..

Oh that’s the worst. I’ll try the acetone

Can you use Hydrogen Peroxide? Thats what im using.

Never tried it. I would be careful using it though, it might discolour some specimens. Test it on some "not so important" specimens first and see how it goes.

@@PrimalRenegade17 I already did. It discolored it 😅it was a beautiful green beetle, pretty big. But it wasn't too bad. I rinsed it in water and most of the color came back. I'm relaxing it right now

Ah yeh, unless it is a structural green (ie from light refracting from the microstructure of the chitin) anything green tends to discolour (green normally turns yellow) same goes for red.

If I start doing this, I'll keep gloves among the supplies, so I don't directly touch this poison.

No. Not yet. I haven’t had a need to. I still have some from my order I bought like 25 years ago!

I looked it up on line and it seemed like a fairly easy thing to find though

@@keysmoths5336 cool interest though! Was fortunate to see quite a few butterflies this year despite the drought. The swallowtails love the big old lilac in my yard. Also grew random packs of wildflower and butterfly seeds that did really well and attracted mostly painted ladies and little pale yellow butterflies. Didnt see many monarchs.
