  • It's been awhile. Thought I should just jump right in and show what I did yesterday. Frances took a sudden turn and lost a lot of weight overnight Friday-Saturday. I noticed brown scours (diarrhea) and took a fecal to the vet. Treating for cocci it is! Here's how you do it.

Thank you. I am never sure if people understand how I explain things. Haha. I stumble over my words a lot and try to go back and make sense. When I talk, my brain is like a diagram of things to say that all want to come out at once! 😄

That sounds frustrating! We wish things could be good for at least a few months, right? Had enough of the health issues lately...
It COULD be dietary. They could be overeating pasture or be reacting to something like too much protein in their diets.
Back to parasites. Sometimes they can spread coccidia to each other. A warm, humid or wet environment is also a good environment for parasites. Other parasites can also cause scouring, so I recommend running a fecal to see what is in there. That way, you know what dewormer/treatment to use. Coccidia need a different treatment than barberbole or roundworms for example. If your goats have mineral deficiencies, they can become more susceptible to parasites. I feed mine Sweetlix Meat Maker. Some do Purina Wind and Rain. A few other good ones out there as well. I also give Replamin Plus gel between two crackers at least once a month (more if anyone has a faded coat, hoof issues, or parasites). Hope this is helpful!
There could be more going on that parasites, so your goats might have a weakness to them or not. I would keep a record for awhile to watch this. I would take in a fecal to a vet, mail it to Meadow Mist labs, or try a fecal yourself if you know how for your worst goats or youngest goats. If you see high counts, then all your goats should be treated in that group. I know some people pick a couple goats at random, collect stool samples, and run a fecal to see how their herd health is doing.
