I know Eggers doesn’t feel as proud of The Northman as his other films, but I wish he could’ve seen me on the edge of my seat in the theater beginning to end. Brilliant movie!
@@worldview3182 it was the marketing that made the twist. “i will avenge you father, i will save you mother, i will kill you fjolnir.” turns out mother didn’t want to be saved😂
Despite his comment of "that's just how films are made", Eggers strikes me as someone who will likely avoid those huge budgets again precisely because he can't stand not having control. And good for him, a visionary artist should *always* have final say, for better or worse.
I agree, I also feel his cinematographer is very un Hollywood and has a pretty grounded way of shooting films based on the two ive seen, (nosferatu, northman)
I think him saying "that's just how films are made is a VERY polite way of saying "I will never make a movie with a huge budget ever again because the studio system sucks".
The Northman had the same effect on me that 2001 A Space Odyssey did. The first time I watched it I couldn't figure out if I loved it or hated it, but it stayed on my mind. Then I watched it again and it became one of my favorite films. And considering the current climate of movies, that says a lot.
Current climate is crazy. I can guarantee you, at any given moment in time, people always say films of a previous generation are better. Just like how the former generation hate and think the new generation is lazy and say "kids now a day (insert negative comment here)". This is the best time in history for film. You are just cherry picking and comparing the current worst films with the best older films.
Me and my friend saw the Lighthouse in the cinema and both agreed it was the best film we'd ever seen (in the cinema). Didnt appreciate the Northman at the time, i think i expected something else, but after watching it again at home, i see its beauty entirely!
This actually sounds like an answer that he hasn't delivered by rote over the last months of press, because the question was semi-original for the questions he's been getting lately.
Oh wow, Last year a shot my own (medium lenght) film, which I self financed from my earnings, and it was the first time Ive worked with a bigger crew as a director (it was 25 people which is still nothing compared to big proffesional profuctions), with profesional actors and we had 10days of shooting back to back, and gosh do I relate to what Eagers is saying here. Feeling all the pressure on your shoulders, being overwhelmed with the thing sometimes, feeling like youre incopetent at moments, literally drowing and screaming for help, while actually trying to make your dream idea come true. This video made my day making me see even the great directors still sometimes get overwhelmed with filming and it's nothing to worry too much about, but rather learn from!
dude is such a good director that we can even call northman his lowest ranked movie. It is a great film, he just also made The Lighthouse and The Witch
Eggers not 100 happy on the northman !? It was incredible! .. like all perfectionists I guess that’s their frame of mind but that movie gave me faith that there is still great movies being made
I think people will definitely be talking about Top Gun: Maverick too alongside the Northman. But yeah, they were in my top 5 favorite films of 2022, alongside Elvis, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio.
This interview was pretty awkward. Josh isn’t the guy to interview Eggers well tbh. I’ve actually met Eggers too and he is a pretty low key, not necessarily forthcoming guy, but seriously, why did Josh ask him about Star Wars etc? Just don’t.
I can help with that. Its an interview. Interviewers ask questions about things theyre curious about. Sometimes interviewees dont like the questions theyre asked. Thats not a big deal though they can just not answer those questions.
@ yea of course, its not exactly an unusual thing. But if you’ve listened to enough of this podcast you know that Josh seems to be obligated to ask every guest about marvel/star wars even if it doesn’t make any sense to ask that guest about it, mainly because thats the scoop that gets clicks. Its not rocket science.
Weirdly enough I think The Northman has a better cut overall than his Nosferatu's. While the latter had a great, atmospheric start, its second half felt a bit rushed and lost some of its weight to me (Lilly-Rose Depp and the cinematography+music carried it through). And I say this loving vampire movies and not caring that much for Viking stories, even with the great Hamlet baseline.
Enjoyed the film, I did NOT enjoy Nicole Kidman in it. She’s a fine actor however nobody looks like that a thousand years ago (even a hundred years ago) it was distracting and then some. It ruined my suspension of disbelief.
@@charliebronson1274 it always depends on your personal taste. But it is awesome, crazy, funny, touching, deep, ridiculous, great action, great acting, the script is pitch perfect. And won 7 oscars

A few months back a buddy and I watched the original Conan, then the Northman. Conan is a better film. The Northman was OK. I did not think it lived up to the hype. And yes, I said that Conan is a better film. From music to cinematography, to pacing. Again, I did not find the Northman to be a bad film. But visually it was very one dimensional.
Sometimes, the director can get emotionally attached to their film because it's their creation, their baby, so they want it to be a certain way. But the studio who is in charge of the finances tells them they have to cut out certain scenes because the runtime is too long or other marketable reasons. Even though the director may have enjoyed filming those scenes or watching them. They have to make the hard decision of letting them go. That is why the directors' cuts are usually longer. They put deleted scenes back in.
@@VincentStevenStudio Yep, I get that, but listening to many directors, quite often the released film bears no resemblance to what they intended it to be, not just the odd scene due to run time. Almost like they aren't even involved in the process If I am hiring someone to do a job, I give them the parameters and I let them do that job. So I'd give them the budget, tell them the tone we're looking for and the maximum run time, then ask if they could do it? Unless it's going drastically wrong, let them do their job.
@Barlofontain You're right. The studio hires them. But it's for that same reason that they have power over the director. Directors who get final cut are usually established and trusted by the studio. They're also aware about what the studio mandates already, so they just design the movie in a way they know the studio would want it. It's all in the screenplay, too. If the screenplay is too long, so is the movie. Tighten up the screenplay before filming.
Northman is in my top 5 movies of all time and i really really love movies man passionately since i was a kid man movies mean so much to me and it bothers me hell never understand the scope of that movie to a lot of people such a massively underrated movie that came out in a time with a generation of no attention span as well affected this incredible film

I thought The Northman was a good, but half-baked film, and I have very similar thoughts about his Nosferatu, as well. The Lighthouse is still my favourite of his, especially having watched it months before its release or even promotion, going into it blindly at a film festival.
The only thing bad with the Northman was the casting of the main 3 big stars, Nicole Kidman, Ethan Hawke and Skaarsgard I didn’t think fit Viking vibes, they stuck out like a sore thumb had they had different actors I think it would’ve been more impactful, amazing visuals too. My only other complaint was the ending, but 🤷🏻♂️
1. It was the biggest production he'd been a part of at the time 2. While they allowed him to keep his usual collaborators as department heads, he still needed adjusting to the studio system, with things like not having Final cut
