Salt Fiber 10GBit/s Speedtest: huge differences between test with browser or app for speedtest.net

  • Salt Fiber 10Gbit/s delivers approx. a maximum of 8 Gbit/s, due to the used XGS-PON technology.
If you have the proper equipment (fitting Ethernet device and NVME SSD), you might be "disappointed" when testing per browser on www.speedtest.net, as you will get a maximum of 2 or 3 GBits at best. However, this is due to the browser application which looks limited / fails in that case of potential speeds up to 10Gbit/s. Instead, choose the speedtest.net application for Win and others, install and check again with that. It delivers accurate, and of course faster results. Best result with the nearest servers, the values decrease with increasing distance. Nevertheless, the differences between browser test and app test remain.

problem there is: 99% of the speedtest servers are built for 1GBit maximum at the moment.
swisscom just recently (july) launched a +/- working speedtest for 10GBit. There‘s some major hardware upgrading and tinkering to do first... additionally you would need a 10GBit network card - forget wireless lan speedtests, they are completely useless.
also, at 10GBit almost 2GBit are used for overhead (error correction, packet addressing etc...) plus the XGS-PON access is shared with other customers (point to multipoint). realistic results are around 7.8 to 8.2 GBit/s

yes, web browsers max out around 3 Gbps, so you should use the desktop app and you should have devices that are capable of handling those speeds... This is what Ookla said

@@noone9295 yes, your ethernet card is limited, if you have a usb 3.0 port or a usb type-c port, you can buy a 2.5Gigs, 5G or 10G ethernet adapter, and if you have an SSD drive, I think your laptop will be able to handle the 10G internet

I'm in the UK and have 1gb/1gb. To be honest, it's more than fast enough. The biggest limitation I find is remote services not having the capacity to serve at my full speed. Most people wouldn't notice any difference between 1gb and 10gb due to latency (the time it takes to establish a connection to a remote server).

Unless you have enterprise grade hardware, the max speed for a ethernet is 1gb/s, it's rare and expensive to have 10gb/s link on a laptop or computer. You can add a network card to your pc if you need it tho 😉

100mb/s is considered entry level these days. It's fast enough for one person, but a whole household would struggle. A good quality 4K stream on it's own is 30mb/s.
