His background vocals absolutely make the song. The album track is good, but the increased tempo and his harmonies put this version several cuts above.
The first time I saw Neal Casal was here and his harmonic playing and singing with Ryan blew me away. RIP to Neal (and to Chris Feinstein, the bassist here). Life is not easy for sensitive souls.
That happened to me to -- this song should come with a warning label"Warning -- Everybody Knows is habit forming." It's because it's PERFECT and this performance is spine-tingling! Other than that it's safe as milk.
I love Ry & The Cards so friggin' hard. This version is just as powerful as on the album, but it's refreshing to see them rock out on their more acoustic gems. Well played, gentlemen.
Devin Webb And you can tell Ryan is a Letterman fan. He lights up every time Dave comes over & shakes his hand. He probably grew up watching Letterman.
I watched Letterman for years, and he always had only singers on there he really liked. I love Ryan Adams, and he even had Michelle Shocked come on and a do like a rare performance, it was great too. David had so many great singers on his show. Miss him too.
What took me so long to check this out?? To me it was of those bands you hear "about" but don't actually check them out and listen. This guy is good, man!!
Just started listening to this guy/band the other day. My boss put a song of his on our playlist. Gotta love this style music with the frontman wearing a Misfit shirt. That's rad.
Proof that a song doesn't have to be difficult to latch on to the masses. In fact, considering the masses, the easier the better. It's all about the melody.
No problem, there is nothing I enjoy more than sharing good music. I just thought of another cool folk-pop band called Good Old War. Just three guys with some great harmonies and catchy melodies.
Dave was'nt kidding when he said these guys were "GREAT". Very fucking cool. Not since CAKE have I heard a new band that I liked so much. I've got to check these guys out!
There are plenty of talented bands and artists out there that rival what was done in the 60's & 70's, trick is they are not as easily accessible - true talent isn't on the radio anymore. If you like RA, I strongly recommend Wilco. I'll always recommend Counting Crows (Ryan and Adam Duritz are friends and have collaborated on a few tracks), Tallest Man on Earth (been called the new Dylan). Those are a few artists that I think most fans of Adams will enjoy.
hmm, that is a good question. Sometimes I think he's crazy egotistical and infatuated with himself, but he also writes some incredibly heart-felt lyrics and you can just hear his pain come through. Most good art is rooted in pain of some kind.
actually, I was under the impression that he was in a punk band before Whiskeytown, and has said that singing country was much easier than punk. and his early solo work would indicate he does have a sense for punk-esque stuff. not sure if it's still there, but he put some of his genre experiment music up on myspace as his default playlist. there was some rap, some heavily distorted metal-esque stuff, etc. I'm not sure I believe he was in a death metal band, but I wouldn't entirely discredit it.
Um yes Madonna was born "Madonna Louise Ciccone" and Prince was born "Prince Rogers Nelson" and Ryan was born as "David Ryan Adams" get your facts straight. Just because you don't like his music doesn't mean you have to say he only gets fans and airplay because his name is one letter away from a "power canadian pop-rocker" from the 80s.
So damn good RIP Neal Casal what a legend and an amazing song writer
this should have at least a hundred million views
Most of his live versions are better than the originals, I've noticed. He's a born performer.
what a badass tune...the middle part where he's messin around with the whammy bar is nasty!
That tight shot of Neal singing harmony "when im spinning out of control" is haunting, considering now that he is gone. Neal was a massive talent.
Or musicians, devil was a musician and the satanic overlords have been jeopardizing souls who use it for good ever since
how someone can be so country and so punk rock at the same time astonishes me, he's definitely one thee best singer song writers of our era.
Cool. I was in the audience for this one. It was a very cool experience. Adams was fantastic.
Jealous!
I don't claim to know a lot about Ryan Adams, but I do know if he'd been around in the seventies, by now he'd be called "legend"!
Mj Ackerman
Well yeah, The earlier you go back any of these people would've been innovators
the man IS a legend.
period.
Legend status previously attained
No kidding.
He is a Legend.
That happened to me to -- this song should come with a warning label"Warning -- Everybody Knows is habit forming." It's because it's PERFECT and this performance is spine-tingling! Other than that it's safe as milk.
Tremendous song. The sound of that strat! Harmony breathtaking.
I love Ry & The Cards so friggin' hard. This version is just as powerful as on the album, but it's refreshing to see them rock out on their more acoustic gems. Well played, gentlemen.
This is a studio quality performance. Should make it on a record. One of my favorite videos on YT.
i love how letterman is a fan
Devin Webb And you can tell Ryan is a Letterman fan. He lights up every time Dave comes over & shakes his hand. He probably grew up watching Letterman.
He said he used to lay on the end of his grandma's bed and she let him watch Letterman. Little did we know, right? Love this performance.
I watched Letterman for years, and he always had only singers on there he really liked. I love Ryan Adams, and he even had Michelle Shocked come on and a do like a rare performance, it was great too. David had so many great singers on his show. Miss him too.
epiphany difference Same here. At least they put GSG back on YT from Letterman. It had been taken down for awile.
That "whammy bar" action toward the end delivers the goods! Ryan was great live! The best singer/songwriter in America.
Man the new Cardinals line up will need to work hard to match this!
Ain't that just brilliant. What a performance
WOW! I LOVE this "rough" version. AMAZING
What took me so long to check this out?? To me it was of those bands you hear "about" but don't actually check them out and listen. This guy is good, man!!
Isabel Appleton ...Ryan is a God ♥️
The level and quality of songwriting and musicianship is superb! 👌
I've commented on this so many times...every time I come back to it, it has the same effect one me. JUST SO GOOD.
That Swervedriver style solo was awesome!
I love how alive his guitar sounds here...I feel like he's playing in my room.
I missed most of Ryan Adams so allow me to catch up right now - awesome right here
RIP Neal,a Great songwriter, singer and mean picker too!
i just love how letterman keeps bringing him back!
Best performance I've seen anyone do on Letterman. They're so on its scary :-)
I missed most of RA too, catching up. Love his old and new stuff. Genius.
Played with the same emotion that Rush infused the original with. Brilliant. Thank you
Letterman is such a pro. Even the rhythm and delivery of his response at the end, is in time with the band.
They were so connected. Ryan Adams and The Cardinals! Miss it.
Best singer/songwriter of our day.
Freakin' amazing. I'm in love with this guy.
Dave loves Ryan....always gives him the utmost props and respect....hey, Dave's no dummy!
Just started listening to this guy/band the other day. My boss put a song of his on our playlist. Gotta love this style music with the frontman wearing a Misfit shirt. That's rad.
i'm in love with him and his band ect... love you ryan adams!
I refer to this video ALL the time because his guitar tone is so AWESOME!!
Sensational song and performance. That Strat sound is super!
Great song, great performance, cool guitar tones, cool shirt.
Wow! This is really good❤❤❤
i love that Letterman has him on all the time!!
Ryan Adams Is the saviour of rock n Roll!
i love the move he does and the way he sings it when he says "shooting out a cannon"
One of my favorites
Proof that a song doesn't have to be difficult to latch on to the masses. In fact, considering the masses, the easier the better. It's all about the melody.
Great singer, songwriter and a great band.
Tasty bass lines lifting the bridge, good job.
This performance is great! The great Ryan Adams & The Cardinals! Check Ryan out with the "whammy bar" at the towards the end-ROCK!
I love this version
classic!awsome!flawless!perfect.
I'm so madly in love with ryan adams!
Ryan is always wonderful but even more so now that he's sober. That's deep soul out there.
how am i to know how im going to hold on when im spinning out of control...what a great line
this song is awesome..
2:12 - 2:38 = "best whammy bar chord non-solo guitar break ever"....
Ryan Adams is the shit.Very talented, great song writer.
"and only one of us in love"... that would be me. Ryan just doesn't know it yet. ;) What an amazing songwriter and musician!!
Ryan was great in Marin, best show yet!
No problem, there is nothing I enjoy more than sharing good music. I just thought of another cool folk-pop band called Good Old War. Just three guys with some great harmonies and catchy melodies.
Utterly brilliant sound those guys get
all killer...no filler. Love Ryan Adams
I wish I could have seen them live at least once. :(
im going to see them in november!! they are coming to england wooohooo!!
Ooooh...This version sounds nice and raunchy! Love that their songs are so chameleon-like.
best version
Very tight and he is working off that band. Nice synchronicity here.
That is a sweet version of this song
Dave was'nt kidding when he said these guys were "GREAT".
Very fucking cool. Not since CAKE have I heard a new band that I liked so much.
I've got to check these guys out!
Nailed it!
Awesome
Nothing lasts forever 💔
Oh, and I love this song! XD
i think its cute how he leans forward like that when he sings.
fking awesomeeeee!
Legend.
im in love with him.
I can't agree more, made greater by the fact that the band look like they're getting off on it too
Brilliant
His move to "shooter not a cannon" 1:26
So freekin hot
The troubadour of his age and time
i think echocannon gets the award for funniest utube comment of the week (once the week is over)
such a great pop song but too advanced for the herd
that guitar solo is fucking amazing

There is, or was a kick ass live in-studio version of this song somewhere on TH-cam
Brilliant (his best?) version of a fantastic song.
"the dude in the hat" is Neal Casal
This guy can really write a great tune !
❤❤❤
I love how Ryan is wearing a misfits t-shirt. He is sooo cool!
hmm, that is a good question. Sometimes I think he's crazy egotistical and infatuated with himself, but he also writes some incredibly heart-felt lyrics and you can just hear his pain come through. Most good art is rooted in pain of some kind.
@surfmcgoogler I remember when Ryan played Come Pick Me Up on Letterman, earlier in the show Dave referred to it as "my theme song".
Damn good sound mixing. Usually bands sound like crap on late night tv shows.
Ryan did some of his best work with the Cardinals - should consider a re union now that he has nowhere to go
1:25 is definitely the best.
love this performance so much, but still, the best part is at the end - "thanks Dr. Phil, and the stupid pet folks"...
For real, I am always amazed at his fashion sense. Just kidding the fact is it doesn't matter he just fucking rocks!
actually, I was under the impression that he was in a punk band before Whiskeytown, and has said that singing country was much easier than punk.

the break at 1:20 is so good

no doubt letterman loves this guy, and the black keys too!
