  • IT'S LEGAL TO PASS ON A DOUBLE YELLOW LINE IN ONTARIO, CANADA!
    The double yellow lines are a safety suggestion so says the drivers handbook.
    Either way, always be cautious when driving on any road
    BUT SERIOUSLY & HONESTLY, IT'S 100% LEGAL IN ONTARIO, CANADA...THE ONLY PROVINCE THAT ALLOWS IT -- LOOK IT UP!

    In an accident you will automatically be at fault and charged - improper passing or wreckless or maybe even dangerous driving. Just like if you get into an accident making a left hand turn you get charged with improper left hand turn, no matter how fast the other car was travelling.

    I asked an Ontario Provincial Police Officer about this. I was informed it is no longer illegal to pass on either a solid or a double solid line. But it is a warning that it is a dangerous idea and you can still be charged with something under the highway safety code. If you're stupid and have a death wish, then go ahead.

    Looks like Hwy 17 - If I had to guess, heading west, midway between Schreiber and Pays Plat.

    Apparently there never was a law about passing on a double line which I was surprised to learn but we were all trained to respect it as such. If you do pass on a double line and something happens then they can charge you with careless driving. This came from a Toronto police officer.

      Every province bans crossing the solid double line to enter the oncoming lane, except for Ontario. I always try to be cautious when passing on a double yellow...I coulda geared down & passed ALL the vehicles without question as I was on a brand new 2023 GSX-R750 motorcycle in this video.

    Saw a Nov 23rd, 2023 story that the Ontario NDP wants to make it illegal.

    There are some roads that are straight for a mile and you might wonder why there is a double line. Often the reason is there is a dip in the road that could be hiding a car, but it's hard to tell from the view you have. If you don't know the road and are not sure, "If in doubt, don't."

    Ontario is the only Canadian province to not make passing on a double yellow line illegal. It can still result in a dangerous driving charge. The NDP is trying to make illegal, which it should be, but also to maintain conformity in Canadian driving standards.

      There is no need to make it illegal. The double line serves as advice, and good advice if your driving a '95 Chevette. A 2023 GSX-R750 or even a lowly 2008 Corvette needs less room to pass.

      @GhostRider020 There is a reason other provinces made it illegal to pass because idiots misjudge or do not see the oncoming traffic resulting in a collision, like idiots with sports cars. Ontario is just out to lunch on this subject, which also highlights another reason more to have more laws nationalized for conformity rather than having oddball laws in each province...

    Straight as an arrow, you can see for miles, dry road, but is illegal or supposedly unsafe to pass. Then in the winter time, when its covered with snow and ice and you can't see the double yellow and have to make your own judgment, then it will be safe.

    Legal, but not advised. I have seen too many near misses with drivers passing in unsafe areas on the roads. Careless driving if one is involved in an accident. Ontario is the only province that allows it. The ndp want to have the law changed. More passing lanes are needed, especially up north where all the waddling RV trailers are.

      So why have the double yellow at all? Seems pointless

    • @garfieldsmith332
      @garfieldsmith332 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@diffened It does seem redundant. Single means not advisable to pass. Double means very dangerous to pass. They should make it illegal to pass on a double yellow. Other provinces it is illegal to do so.

    • @fschilder6419
      @fschilder6419 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They can't make it illegal because of the snow in winter when the lines may be covered. Ultimately, it is up to the driver to conduct themselves safely and if they create a risk, police can then issue the ticket and it will stand up in court, not because of the double line, but because the driver's action created a hazardous situation.

    So when you passed those first two cars and then you ducked back in behind that trailer... You slowed way down to 10 or 15 mph slower than the trailer was going and he put a huge gap in front of you. WHY? Are you some beginner noob driver? Is your judgment that bad you thought you were going to hit the back of the trailer?
