AIDA 2 Star - Should you do a Freediving Course?

  • My thoughts on AIDA 2 and freediving courses in general. I hope everyone who takes freediving seriously will go out and do a course - not for your own safety, but also for the safety of others.
    There are a few freediving courses, FII, SSI, AIDA, but they are all fairly similar and it doesn't really matter which one you do - the core basics will be the same. I beleive in america FII is the major system, while SSI and AIDA are more common in the rest of the world.

    Hey! I just took the AIDA 2 star course the past weekend and it was very nice. Unfortunately I took it in the Black Sea and I couldn't see much but It still was pretty awesome. I reached 16.8 meters and I was so proud of me because I succeeded in the end. I was very scared at first and also we encountered the situation of a very cold water deeper than 8 meters. I will post the video in the next 2 weeks maximum (because I will leave in Greece for a week and I don't have time until I come back).

    Makes me glad i left the video up. I thought it was a bit lame so almost took it down.

    I have just passed my ssi level 1, and its interesting the comparison on the Aida 2 certification is actually a bit harder with a 16mtr target over a 10 mtr target for the dive, rescue and return tasks. but the volume of safety information was so impressive. without the course I would not have known 90% of the technique and safety. im glad I started with a course and not tried to do it myself.
    My background was NO experience in diving at all till I took the course.

    i passed the FII 1 course recently and i highly recommend it. i can't really compare the others (AIDA, SSI) b/c i haven't taken them but i was very impressed by the amount of information, the emphasis on technique, and the course goals are 3 min static breath hold and a 20 m dive. i think i would have been disappointed if the depth was any shallower but i'm kinda competitive, keep a higher level of fitness and i'm in the water a LOT and am comfortable with pushing myself (within reason).

    The only thing stopping me from doing a course is the travel and cost which i think is about $425 :(

    Thanks for the tips Dean, I just passed Apnea Total for beginner and equalize with head down was really not easy. I should find your video before I did the course :)
    Anyway I will learn equalize before the extension course. Great videos!

      The only reason I didn't pass the course was because I couldn't equalise with head down. (Head up, I'm fine!). I'm good at depth and apnea etc, just struggled with upside down equalisation. Any tips please? Cheers

    pretty much all the same. The information covered is basically all the same, however maybe some emphasis has changed in places. For example AIDA has some questions about the freediving competition disciplines, while some course just briefly touch on it. AIDA was the first and the original. AIDA textbooks are rather low quality.. mostly just powerpoint slides. While SSI apparently has a really nice textbook. I would choose the course that is easiest for you to attend - dont worry about the system

    Yeah, I heard FII is one of the tougher and more demanding courses out there. Its mainly available in the US, while the have AIDA and SII are mainly available outside US. I heard the FII level 3 pass required a 60m dive!!! (Is that true??)

    I'm scared, very scared!! Drowning!! Also, I don't think I'd ever ever be able to save anyone, I think I'd be too worried about saving myself!

    I would actually look more into the course that is more strict as I think it would be safer. I want more technical knowledge & understanding rather than how to compete.

    Does one need to know how to swim and tread water before taking freediving course?

  • @djredlocks
    @djredlocks 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not sure...that sounds really f'n deep. on their website they don't give a depth requirement for level 3 cert. but level2 is 40 m...like i said their program is concerned with mastering technique rather than in-class performance...although that being said some of the guys in my L1 class didn't make it close to the depth and did not pass the class as a result despite doing everything else correctly (this was mostly equalization problems, buy a f'n neti pot ppl!)

    Did u manage to reach the depth requirements of 16m the first time or did ur equalisation problems stop u. If so, how many open water dives did it take u?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I could not make it on my freediving course. Big waste of money since I couldn't equalize. I practiced 3 days by myself with a bouy and line, doing free immersion head up - after 3 days I could do it.

      Freediver HD did u carry on down the Aida line of courses or are u self taught, would u recommend going all the way to AIDA 4* or buying your own gear and just self teaching yourself after the first course?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the AIDA 3, but found it really just a repeat of Aida 2. I think the first level is all you need, how to dive, safety, everything. AIDA 3 just improves technique, which i think most can do themselves while training with others. I would only do the other levels if going to instructor course.

    Do you recommend people to practice apnea before taking the actual course?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +moon lite you dont need to practice at all before taking a course, though learning how to equalize first could help speed things up a lot. I did the freediving course, but I was limited cause i could not equalize, waste of time and money if this happens.

    what does a freediving course qualify you for? anything?

    • @freediverhd
      @freediverhd  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Blueis Notgreen Nothing actually. The qualification itself is pretty much useless. The actual knowledge is useful though.

    • @Verena.Fleissner.Unlimited
      @Verena.Fleissner.Unlimited 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      you'll need the qualification for certain dive sites to enter. e.g. dive towers or also some natural marine parks won't let you dive there without a licence.
