I was first introduced to Bruce in 1979 when I was 14 and saw him live for the first time in 1981. I have now seen him 45 times and recently went to New York to see him on Broadway. Despite his music evolving over the years and still being relevant and extraordinary, I always go back to his first 4 albums, which for me showed him and the band at their peak. And amongst those first four albums, it was always Wild that stood out for me and, in particular, Kitty, which to this day is still my favourite of all of his songs. If you are feeling down, just blast it out and that smile will return evoking the joy of life. And yet in the 46 times I've seen him live, I've never yet heard him play Kitty live. Everything else, just not Kitty. So, I'm hoping that when the Band next tour, I will be lucky enough to see him jam to this song, hopefully along the lines of Perth, which is just extraordinary in both it's musicianship and the joie de vivre it brings. Look at everyone dancing having the time of their lives as the greatest rock and roll band of all time struts it's stuff. What a version, what a night, what a lucky crowd! :) Turn the volume up and just blast!! Dare you not to love it.... And if you can, check out a live version of Kitty from the Late Late Show circa 2008, the footage has been removed for licensing reasons, but you can still hear the Band play and the audience just loving it. What a song, what a band, what talent.
The first time I heard Kitty's Back was in 1975. It was two years after "The Wild, Innocent and the E Street Shuffle" came out. I have been a devoted Springsteen fan ever since. I got hooked on Bruce on a hot summer day in 1975 when a friend walked through my door with a copy of Born to Run under his arm and exclaimed, "Man, you gotta hear this". I've only been able to see Bruce and E Street 4 times in 4 decades the most recent concert being at the Los Angeles Sports Arena on March 15, 2016. I savored every word and absorbed every note. A wonderful fully immersed three and a half hour experience.
In the beginning there was Kitty's Back. You can take this to any flippin Jazz fest on any given day. Props to Bruce and the band. Turn it up until it hurts.
I love Bruce....no other musician evokes a stream of emotions in me like his words and music do. I think Bruce is a bit of a tortured soul which is why his performances express such empathy and understanding. All credit to the E Street Band. They are all superb musicians in their own right. Thankyou all...your music has positively impacted my life for over 40 years.
The respect for this man goes far beyond his incredible music, his inspirational words, and his epic performances......How far is still a mystery to me......Long Live The Boss
Holy Jesus! I've only heard this on album, never live. OH MY GOD! If anyone ever challenges me on the fact that Bruce and the E Street Band are not the best performance band ever, I am shoving this video down their throat! This was Earth-shaking, soul-quaking, shake-n-baking, love-making spectacular! God bless you all, Peace and Love! Oh yeah, order the good wine!
Yes! The stuff he wrote and produced in the 70s set the bar incredibly high! When people ask me what my favourite Bruce song is, I can't answer. It depends on the moment.
Rarely, do I take the time to comment on a video / song, but I can't get enough of this, so I decided to do a post. This is one of the best performances of any song I've ever seen / heard. Ever. O M G !
He's above average, but there are three guitarists in the band for this show who are better...in order, Tom Morello, Nils Lofgren, Steve Van Zandt and then Bruce...IMO at least.
I’ve been going to see Bruce play live - solo, with the E Street Band and with other groups - since 1978, and while he’s written and plays an incredible variety of great material, it doesn’t get any better than this. This is one of the things I play for folks who haven’t yet been seduced by Bruce’s music. What a jam!
This is fantastic and and I have loved this song since recording it on a cassette in 1974. He doesn't play It that often but it is truly one of his best. But what amazes me about Bruce is he is Rock and Rolls jukebox. Think about it, he not only play almost all of his songs on a regular basis, but plays what seems to be the entire library of rock and roll. It is really an under appreciated benefit of him and the band.
Considering Bruce wrote this masterpiece so young is incredible in of itself, but the fact he and the band are still playing it with such passion and style after all these years? Wowzers ...! Bruce hitting that note at 7:00, so cool.
The first time I heard this, was in 1973 at a free concert by sponsored by the City of Long Branch… Bruce perfumed on a stage that was a flat bed trailer.. I was old school Jersey Style. After the show, Bruce myself and Mad Dog Vinnie Lopez with and a burger and cold beers.
Every Bruce video I watch, he constantly plays with such passion and joy, and you can see the band members are having the time of their lives too. This version is probably the closest thing to perfection you will ever find! It's no wonder we all go back time and time again to his concerts. I've seen a lot of great bands live but the Boss is head and shoulders above the rest.
What a performance! Pittsburgh can't wait until Bruce and the E Street Band shuffle here on April 22! I hope they bring Kitty along, too, and give her and Rosalita a NYC Serenade..Glory Days forever!
I don't think Perth truly knew how lucky they were to get this gem. What a performance! I would have LOVED to have seen this when I saw him in Melbourne, Kitty is in my top 5 still to get! Maybe next tour Bruce :)
As a guitar player, the tone Bruce gets here, and any other time he’s played it over the years, I just wonder how he does it. It can’t all just be in the hands man.
My all-time fave Bruce song. I used to play it to muso friends to show Bruce's underrated soloing that was such an influence on my own playing. I ripped off a bunch of his licks from the 1978 Passaic bootleg. Thanks, Boss.
I have xm radio in my car and I listen to the Bruce Springsteen channel pretty much most of the time. When this song comes on I go berserk. Such an awesome song. For anyone who has not even seen a live Springsteen concert they would be surprised that he plays stuff like this. This guy is just super talented. Now I have found this video. Wow, going to share it. Just outstanding to the max. I saw him in Los Angeles on 3/19/2016 when he was given the honor to be the last one to play at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena before they tore it down. What a night. It was the "River Tour". He played all "The River" and followed with his hits. He played just a couple of minutes short of 4 hours. He ended with an extra song that night, "Bobby Jean". When are you coming back to Los Angeles Bruce??
Goose bumps from the start. Smiling from start to finish. Kitty's Back too...Thanks a real treat for me. I say I hope the audience wasn't expecting a sicky sweet version of dancing in the dark.
The horn section rocks on this, especially at 9:24 and on, there's a feel,a Mancini like sense….So tight. It's funny starting at 10:28 it almost sounds like Duane Allman playing guitar.
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW This is absolutely amazing!!!!!! There is nothing like hearing fantastic musicians live on stage, I wish I had been there I've yet to hear Kitty live.
What a great song and what a fantastic performance. Seriously each one of BOSS's live performance vids is worth thousands of those music videos nowadays artists make. Pure ecstasy.
Bruce, thanks for putting these GOOD quality videos out for us. I sure as hell couldn't make it to Perth to see any shows (I live in NY and I walk dogs for a living) so it's cool to see what I missed. Up in the middle of the night with stressed out insomnia, you are here on TH-cam and you are indeed good company and cheering me up!
Matthew Bailey in truth, Bruce was inducted solo when he was, as he was a solo artist at that time, having disbanded the E Street Band after Tunnel Of Love, only regrouping them for a late 90s/early 00s reunion tour, culminating in the excellent comeback album The Rising. Still, Bruce still managed to release two more “solo” albums-Seger Sessions and Devils & Dust-amidst a slew of other new E Street Band albums.
@@GuadalupePicasso Bruce was inducted as a solo artist because the rules say you have to have released your first recording at least 25 years prior to your induction. The first release credited to the E Street Band was the Live 75-85 album. That is why the band had to wait.

This is a killer arrangement and the closest you can feel to what a band grooves like when the musicians are playing for themselves and the audience at the same time

Tom's real brilliance shows best on Ghost of Tom Joad, but yes, this song and many others demonstrate the real Boss, the band boss who assembles the most talented people he can find and lets them do their thing. The E Street Band richly deserves its separate place in the R&R Hall of Fame!
rented a place with my wife, back in 1979, no furntiture except a few vynal records, amongst them was "TheWild , The Innocent and E Street Shuffle." Still have it and play it, and the guy who we rented the house off let us keep it. the recording that is. How good is that for an intro into this incredible band and BS.
I heard them play this in Pittsburgh last year. In the midst of a 30+ song’d, 3 hour and 45 minute set, it was definitely one of the (many) highlights.
This song was written when Bruce was just 23 years old!
I cannot come up with enough superlatives to make people understand how magnificent this performance is.
You can have your Rolling Stones, your, LED Zeppelin, etc. I’ll take Bruce & The ESB any day. Not a better bunch of Musicians on Planet Earth
