Blyth survived but took so long in recovery he was not returned to his old unit but reassigned to a different one. As he never came back from the hospital the men in Easy Company thought he died. He stayed in the army and fought in Korea, finally dying in 1967. Durning his service he earned a Silver Star, 3 Bronze Stars, and 3 Purple Hearts (his first was for his injury shown in Band of Brothers).

9:00 The US trooper who fired was "Shifty" Powers, Easy Company's best marksman - and he got the guy. Shifty was also very observant. A few months after this, when Easy Company was defending against Germans while overlooking a forest, Shifty spotted a single, fully-grown tree that hadn’t been there the previous day. (A single tree. In a forest full of trees. Go figure.) He and Sergeant Carwood Lipton persuaded the higher-ups to drop some artillery shells on that spot, and the German anti-aircraft battery being set up there (the tree was intended to camouflage the position) was abandoned due to the shelling.
15:35 Blithe suffered from what was then called “hysterical blindness.” Nowadays, this is recognized as being one of the symptoms of Conversion Disorder, which is a medical condition where the brain and body's nerves don't send and receive signals the way they're supposed to. Not surprisingly, some of the causes of Conversion Disorder are psychological in nature.

When they were making Band of Brothers, the internet was in its infancy. They went by the veterans' experiences. Even some of the veterans thought Blythe was dead at that year. It wasn't until after the miniseries was made that they found out about Blythe

The soldier that was in the store that exploded was Ed Tipper. He suffered 2 broken legs and lost his left eye in the blast. And in the book according to other soldiers he did walk on his broken legs at first. His daughter Kerry Tipper is a politician in the Colorado House of Representatives.

The amazing thing is that Ed recovered to play racquetball and ski into his 80s. Don’t feel bad. I’ve seen this series from start to finish at least 10 times and I get emotional every single time. As a 36 year old man with a wife and 3 kids, it’s very easy to put yourself in their position where everything could be taken from you in a second. We owe what we have to those men who gave up what they had or never experienced so that we could enjoy life.

@@RKnights The mix up came about as two veterans went to the funeral of a guy named Albert Blythe in 1948. They didn't realise it wasn't the guy that they'd served with (Albert Blithe). They told this story to the historian writing the book and it got included in the series. They were apparently very upset that they'd got this wrong (they only found out after the series aired) as otherwise he would have been invited to their reunions.

The infantry that easy company had to fight at Brecourt Manor, Saint Côme-du-Mont and Carentan were mostly from the 6th Parachute Regiment of the 2nd Fallschirmjäger-Division, commanded by Oberst Friedrich von der Heydte. [They were experienced and trained as paratroopers also.]
After capturing Carentan, the next morning easy company and the rest of the 506th PIR along with the 501st PIR were attacked about a mile southwest of Carentan. Two battalions of the 37th SS Panzergrenadier Regiment, supported by the 17th SS Panzer Battalion and elements of the 6th Parachute Regiment attacked the 2 regiments (501, 506) of the 101st division. Around noontime, some of the German units had reached positions within 500 yards of Carentan until attacked a little later by CCA of the U.S. 2nd Armored Division.

In the book also, Lipton was actually hit by a mortar round and not that anti tank gun shown in the episode. And I’m sure a lot will comment on this but Albert Blithe didnt die of his wounds, he went on to serve in Korea and died in 1967 after a surgery for a perforated ulcer. Winters has said many times the show depicted blithe wrong and that he was a hero and should be recognized as one.

I wish I could tell you this was the most difficult episode you all will face, but that simply is not the case. Brace yourselves as you continue the show, as there are a lot of tough moments ahead. In a real firefight like the entry into Carentan you might be able to deploy smoke in front of the enemy (via artillery, mortars, grenade launcher, hand) and get good and close before they can see you clearly. Smoke can be a real asset when assaulting a position. One of those fight smarter not harder things. Think about how you'd feel if you had your machine gun position all set up with a clear field of fire, thinking you're ready to repel the enemy, and then a bunch of paratroopers blind you with smoke before running right up to you and ripping you up with small arms or blasting you with frags.

The powder they were sprinkling on the wound is called Sulfa Powder. It's was an antibacterial powder used to help keep infections in the wound down until the Soldier can be gotten to an aide station or field hospital. It also helped the blood in the wound to coagulate so the bleeding could be stopped.

Penicillin actually existed at that time, but it was so hard to culture and produce with the crude means they had at the time, it meant only a few doses were available over a period of weeks.
Sulfa had its problems. A fair number of people had serious allergic reactions to it and it had to be applied directly to the wound area instead of being injected, so further tissue damage might be inflicted while using it.
It wasn't until after the war that a method of quickly mass producing Penicillin was developed.

And death is random. Worked with a guy, who fought in Nam, while he was on the crapper, an enemy mortar shell landed between his legs ... it was a dud ;-) In WW II, you fought until victory or death. Re: The watches. Keep in mind most of these young men had grown up incredibly poor during the Great Depression and had absolutely nothing when they entered the services- and thus looting was a thing. My Father served in WWII and Korea and grew up as one of 13 kids in the rural South (farmers). When he was in the Army during WWII it was the first time he had ever had 3 meals a day in his lifetime. He loved Army food despite everyone else complaining. He loaned out his pay with interest to other guys in his unit and then would collect the next payday and send the money home to his family and just keep the interest.

The name of the WW1 documentary you referred to was called, "They Shall Not Grow Old". It WAS extraordinary! It was put together by Peter Jackson, who took thousands and thousands of feet of footage shot during the First World War. In much of the footage, the men were looking at the camera and talking. Movies in those days were silent, so there was no way to know what the men were saying. Jackson had lip readers watch the footage. They were able to determine exactly what they were saying, while being filmed. They then had professional actors speak the words, matched with the lip movements of the soldiers. The result was phenomenal. It's one of the most captivating pieces of film I've ever seen., documentary, or otherwise.

Spier's speech to Blythe was very similar to what James Jones (author of From Here to Eternity) wrote of what he called "The evolution of a soldier": The only hope you have is to give up hope. Jones would have known; he served on Guadalcanal and on New Georgia, in the Solomon Islands in the Pacific.

Asking if Perconte was taking the watch off of a dead enemy or dead GI.
It was a dead enemy. It was a “code” in that you only take what the Army issued from dead GIs. In Ep2 Winters took the rifle of the dead trooper still hanging in the tree. Take their ammo, blanket, raincoat, etc that the government gave them. Leave behind personal stuff like Wallets, watches, eyeglasses, etc. Stuff from dead enemy was fair game.

The US Army in WW2 had a rule that a soldier could not be held accountable for anything they did or said in the first five seconds after waking. It was there for a good reason.
My grandfather served in the Pacific; island fighting. Until the end of his life, when grandma wanted to wake him up, she had to go down to the end of the bed and poke his foot from a distance with a golf club. If she just tried to shake or touch him awake, his hands would be around her throat immediately. That’s how strong the ‘sleep alert and ready to fight’ instinct could get.

    • @ChuckJansenII
      @ChuckJansenII 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They still have that rule in the military. When I was in, dispatch might be sent to wake someone in their dorm room. We had a guy that would punch anyone within 5 second range. The guys would wake him by poking him with a telescoping pole to avoid being decked out.

This is another great reaction...keep them coming. But one note for Julien regarding being drafted for a foreign war vs a homeland invasion...World War 2 and the fight against Hitler and the Japanese and Mussolini, was all a foreign war for the United States. I am sure that he would not be hesitant to be drafted to fight the Nazis, so I just wanted to let him know that his categorization is a bit off. Perhaps he meant he would more easily accept being drafted into a war where the US was attacked than he would be if he were being drafted to fight in a a war of aggression or regime change? ✌

The under-age soldier wasn't anything new the British forces in ww1 had over 250,000 boy soldiers and the same happened in ww2.
I had a great uncle that served 1914- 1918 in the first war lied about his age put it up to 18 was 15, then when ww2 came along lied again and took a few years off to reenlist he survived both. His son also enlisted for ww2 was killed in action at the end of the war .
