I grew up in in a multi cultural London secondary school, which set the scene for turning me into an Ally of Indigenous people in all the overseas territories in which I followed my career. It enabled me to recognise that the colonising nations, especially Britain, behaved with callous disregard for the rights and culture of the invaded populations, enough to make me ashamed of my English inheritance, mitigated only slightly by being of Scottish descent. It is not too late to remedy those defects, so long as the descendants of the invaders discard their prejudices, in favour of beginning to recognise the harm that was done by their forefathers, and interact with First Nations with respect and understanding, along the lines that were discussed by Katherine and Bill at the Breaking Bannock event. There was some mention of "consultation", which is an important component of the reconciliation process, but which is too often taken to mean the dominant party telling the other party "This is what we are going to do", without even listening to what the other party would like to happen. It is heart warming to see such a plentiful and interested audience, and I congratulate the Gabriola Arts Council for their initiative in screening this programme.
