  • Hi, I'm Shiph! I share 5 culture shocks from my time in London and Newbold College. Hopefully, you can see how traveling can finesse the generalized ideas you may have of a people and a way of life.
    1. Strangers were super friendly to me in England!
    2. Honestly, the food was delicious in Newbold!
    3. I was pleasantly surprised at the diversity in London and Newbold!
    4. I mean, I knew I would see roundabouts. I didn't expect that many!
    5. Finally, I was completely beside myself when I saw a bicyclist just hanging out IN THE MIDDLE LANE, on a big road in London. WHAT!
    I was culture shocked. #alwaysinawe #stayinawe #stayawesome
Enjoy an adventure of culture and love!

The 'poor food' reputation is a legacy from WW2 and the conditions US service people saw in the UK at that time and reported on when they got home.
Food in the United Kingdom was strictly rationed during the war years so to anyone coming from a country where food was not only plentiful but easily obtained, the British diet would have appeared meagre and very dull.

Well said. The only foodstuff that wasn't rationed (into the 1950s) was bread.

In the 50's I just about lived off tins of spam, whilst the lovely food was export only. Things only got better gradually - we didn't finish paying off the war debt to the US and Canada until 2007.

There is a reason the Police in UK are friendly compared with the Police in the US and it is because UK police are an unarmed civil forced. The Police in the US are armed para militaries that have never had a history of anything else ie you don't ask them for directions or the time which British police would be happy to tell you if you asked. Also because US police suspect that anyone they deal with may have a gun makes them a lot more aggressive in their interactions with the civil population in the US. UK police don't have that concern because guns are illegal in the UK and are thus very rarely used because criminals find them very difficult to get hold of.

If you come to the North of England, you'll find that the hospitality and welcome is even more breath-taking to all foreigners. In London it is almost a capital offence to chat to anybody on the train. Here in Yorkshire we're famed for "being nice!" We chat because we're interested in you. The sights are also equally as London, but that place has become soooooo commercialised, expensive and too many foreigners. Now that may sound a little upside down, but to find the true England, get out of London, get on a train, go North and come to Yorkshire. You will not forget it ever.

    • @dfpguitar
      @dfpguitar 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

racism is quite an old fashioned thing and it's difficult to find that overt sort in the UK anymore. But the UK has plenty of more nuanced chauvinism/bigotry/xenophobia.
But the core reason of these chauvinisms tends to be social groups that feel insecure wanting to empower themselves by belittling/scapegoating/othering some other social group.
You will find plenty of this against "immigrants" which generally stands for all immigrants that aren't White first worlders. This immigrant one has a crossover with discrimination against Muslims.
You will find heaps of it against transgender people, often pushed by even feminist groups, and you will get ones that are based on social status and political beliefs too.
"lefties" will consider "Tories" the most evil people in the world. And hardcore Tories will look down on the lefties as fools.
Plenty of these more nuanced chauvinisms about even within minority communities.

The origin of the 'poor food' reputation is it's the story many US service men and women took back with them after WW2.
What those people failed to report was the fact that the British had been living under siege conditions and food rationing.
Rationing of sweets (candy) lasted until the early 50's.

Good observations. Our food is not nearly as bad as people say. I think the reputation came from rationing in WWII. Roundabouts are brilliant and way better than 4-way stop signs. Traffic flows so much better. I expected something about queueing. We need to keep improving safe spaces for bicycles.

The UK got a bad reputation about food because we came out of the Great Depression and went straight into WW2, with rationing from 1940 to 1954.... so it took a few years to get up to culinary speed again.

The food one comes from the returning GI's in WW2. When they arrived during 1942/3 the UK had been at war for three years and everything was rationed and what food that was available was not very good. The UK has never really thrown that reputation off, and in part we Brits are responsible because we tend not to shout about just how good and diverse the food here is. Also we do tend to like some strangely named foods, but who care about the name if it tastes good?

We don't 'have' a religion, tikka masala is a curry and my favourite ENGLISH dish, London is a totally different country to me and everywhere is completely different. Sometimes the only common thing is the language we speak. Going to London isn't experiencing what England actually is and I've failed to ever know someone who hasn't visted England and gone to the Midlands or the North. If there is no specific bike lane - and there are quite a lot of bike lanes in London - it is safer for the cyclist to be in the middle of the road, where s/he can BE SEEN by automobiles. Being in the gutter side is dangerous when turning as larger vehicles have blind spots and, to be blunt, can crush and kill a cyclist when turning. At cycling school the emphasis is on being seen ie middle of the road, hi-viz clothes and helmets. People cycle because transport is hugely expensive in London.

Yup! England is a diverse country, so are other western European countries like the Netherlands, France, Belgium, etc.
Food in English supermarkets is of better quality than US food bc additives, preservatives, and GMO are banned here due to EU law.
US chicken is banned in EU countries bc it’s pumped with chemicals.
Our native national cuisine is awful, that’s why we have so much international food, and our quality of food isn’t as good as Italy’s, Greece’s, Spain’s, Portugal’s, and the Netherlands’s.
Yeah we’re quite friendly here, but we’re not as loud, and we’re less over-the-top and in-your-face than US-Americans. Southern English people are more reserved and private than northern English people.
Hope you enjoy your time here!

I think the reserved non-communicative Brit is somewhat eliminated in the face of tourists/visitors. If you are a tourist, especially from a popular often aspirational country like the US or Australia, YOU are the novelty, and people are also curious about what you think of their country. Meanwhile, most Brits as they go about their lives are trying to engage with strangers as little as possible!

Culture shock? Better word is culture tsunami for Americans who have no idea of how the rest of the word lives. They live a very secluded life not even knowing the culture in other US states. Cycles in the middle of the road, where else on the sidewalks, pavements , or mountains. Americans don't walk let alone cycle. Cars cars and trucks, not even public transport. Wake up, open your eyes and read bout other countries.

London is very different really its an international city if you go out to areas like East Anglia there is really very little mixing of cultures its very western europe by example Norfolk is 98 percent white ayrian next is chinese and a handful of carribean familes. Most are Norwich do to the university here its one of the best in the UK for medical science and sustainable food studies. Most people are polite but like anywhere I was told over and over that New yorkers are miserable and dull but dated one for 4 years and shes wasnt dull or miserable at all and when i stayed in New york met plenty of polite people. But that doesnt mean the same people that were nice to me would be nice to the next five people they spoke to all day tempers and moods eb and flow over the day you phone me at work on a friday near 4 pm and i ll be extremely polite and helpful because i know i finish at 4 and i dont have to come back for 72 hours catch me at the start of the week and am likely to be short to the point and as helpful as i need to be to get the job done.

Diversity in London? OK If you want to see diversity then please visit a city called leicester, it's bang in the middle of the country in a area called the midlands. You will really enjoy it there specially if you like your diverse food (indian). The best time to visit would be when the Dewali celebrations start. You will see people from all around the world & the food will blow your mind & if you like shopping for jewelry & clothes then look no further than when you come to the Melton Road (the golden mile) in leicester. If you come at the right time then you will see concerts dancing & many other performances. You will have an experience you'll never forget I promise.

I went there 25 years ago for a football match and on passing through one particular district of Leicester it wasn't diverse at all ! lol

@@Isleofskye lol 25 years ago, things have changed in today's world. Besides you only went to one district that doesn't apply to leicester as a whole. Thank You for that utterly ridiculous riposte.Firstly I deliberately stressed that I only passed thru' ONE area so why you are telling me that heaven only knows as,obviously, that was an all-Asian area which is not going to reflect the whole of Leicester. You COMPLETELY missed the irony of my post in that, almost by definition, "diversity" means predomiantly White areas that also have other people from other Cultures including Asian. I was making the point that once an area becomes primarily Asiatic then invariably, in time, the whole of the surrounding area does so not " diverse" at all. When you say "strong pilar" I assume you mean strong pillar and nobody has suggested or implied otherwise. My point was that Asians socially do not mix very well. They are happy to mix for " Business" but would rather live among other Asians i their own Communities or are you the only one NOT to notice that ?

    • @shayb9424
      @shayb9424 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Isleofskye I'll keep it short. I presume you put all Asian people in one cup meaning what one does all the others do. You really are narrow minded & living in a world that doesn't exist other than in your own mind. If anyone is not noticing a way of life in leicester it would be you as I need to remind you who lives here & it's not you. Do your research before commenting on how white people or black Asian or any people from any walks of life are living in the uk let alone leicester. Your comments come across to me as very offensive when you claim that Asians in leicester or uk do not mix with others socially unless it's business related, you really are living in a kookoo land. Listen to yourself & see how ridiculous you really are. This is a worthless argument as you are clearly uneducated. Oh by the way you have a few spelling mistakes in your stupid message too lol.😆

    • @Isleofskye
      @Isleofskye 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Au Contraire. I have seen area after area change in a "Domino Effect". Manor Park/Forest Gate in East London started to have a sizeable Asian populace then they became the majority. Then they spread along The London Road to Ilford then Seven Kings then Goodmayes and latterly Chadwell Heath to the extent that a friend is moving as his Grandson is one of only 2 white kids in the whole primary school which was 99% White less than 35 years ago. Simple maths: The average Asian Family has just over 4 children meaning 16,000 progeny in 7 generations while the average Jewish/Chinese and Whites have just meaning around 130 offspring.
We have established your English is poor but even you must understand those mathematical stats...
EVERYONE bar you knows that Asians ( in the main with "some" exceptions ) like to live and socialise with their own fellow Asians and set up "Little Asia's" wherever they reside. Bradford is totally divided, for example or did you not realise that either ?
A Jamaican friend went shopping in Whitechapel/Aldgate.East London after an interview 2 weeks ago and said that in the hour she spent looking around she did not hear ONE WORD of English spoken.
Stick to Leicester as your Geography and knowledge of recent history aren't too clever either...lol

1 - No English people around
2 - Not a lot of people speak English
    3 - Over crowded Trains
4 - Over crowded Tube Trains
    5 - Over crowded Busses
6 - Easier to catch foreign diseases
7 - Not easy to see a doctor
8 - Not easy to see a dentist
9 - No chance of getting any local authority housing
10 - No chance of seeing any police, if you are robbed, burgled, attacked, etc.
Best to avoid at all costs, Wales, Scotland and Ireland are far nicer to visit.

Maybe if you watched some of the thousands of YT channels dedicated to “UK culture shock” made by Americans who knew nothing about Britain
before they visited these shores , and repeat the same five or ten “ shocks “ over and over again you would not be so surprised to find a few slight differences . Yes , we drive on the left , no its not continually raining or foggy ,although one day of rain usually elicits the tired old “ typical British weather” response from US vloggers . No the police do not need to be routinely armed , as we are not a nation of violent psychopaths, and yes the food is quite ok and yes we are generally quite friendly. A quick glance at a map will show you that we are not as far from other European countries as the US is , and yes we have our own currency - the pound sterling , and have had for 1500 years. Anything else ? Oh yes , we are not a bunch of religious lunatics either. Job done , save your breath.

Are you um responding to the right video? I didn't mention currency, driving on the left, weather, and what not...anyway, culture shock is based on ignorance and being inexperienced in a new culture. I'd like to ask that comments in the comment section, as a PSA to you and to everybody, stay honest - so feel continue to bring the criticism - but also...stay healthy - so keep that in mind and thank you sincerely for stopping by. Blessings, from a religious person (as opposed to your mentioning of a religious lunatic).

@@CultureAndLove It’s a generalised comment to express frustration at these endlessly repeated “Shocks” that Britain is different from the US. Of course its different , It’s a different country ! I don’t see any vlogs by Albanians expressing amazement that Turkmenistan, for example, is sooo different , that it’s a “Culture Shock”
I used generic examples to encourage Americans to stop wasting their time telling everyone that Britain is different over and over ,ad nauseam.
Your particular offering wasn’t heavy on religion but many are sickeningly so.

@@ruadhagainagaidheal9398 Ah, I haven't been to any of those countries but I have been to Iceland and made a sort of similar video like this one for England, but perhaps, a comparison video that makes one feel at home (like I did with Iceland) is so much more connecting aka heartwarming than making a culture shock video. This is making me think about whether or not culture shock videos in general, for any culture/country/category, could be done in a heartwarming way, and hope to be part of cultural appreciation instead of repeating that so and so is SO different than so and so. Ad nauseum seems to be a natural response if I were in your shoes. I think I can see a bit more what you're pointing to. Thank you for taking time, especially, a second time, to stop by and reply. Let’s be honest! The great(?) diversity is nothing to be proud of. Instead it’s evidence of a lack of basic democracy in this country that used to pride itself on such.
If Britain were a democracy we would be out of the EU by now and mass immigration by people who will never - ever - integrate, assimilate or identify with this country would never have happened.
If Britain was democratic British people would not now be made to feel like foreigners in their own country.
Most of our politicians are nothing but crooks and charlatans and our mainstream media doesn’t even pretend to tell the truth when it doesn’t suit them.
Sixty years of immigration by people who hate us has reduced Britain to a grotesquely overcrowded stink-hole dump. And we are even forced to eat halal food.
