In those lines about pretending to be black BeWhy is referencing a tendency among K-hip-hop and k-pop rappers to appeal to Black culture or "blackness" for authenticity. Even Zico, who almost always stays away from this kind of stuff, did it once in his line "We're yellow people but I got Black soul" from his track Bermuda Triangle. BeWhy's essentially saying he doesn't need to do that in order to be successful and is proud of his own identity.
Not once, Zico is a perfect example of people who try to do this. He has done extremely problematic over the years, which is a shame cause he's actually really talented. Although I will say he's been more low key recently and doesn't do all the extra stuff.
@@itiswhatitis4144 You're right. It doesn't really affect my enjoyment of him, but it is a bit disappointing. Recently he seems to be better about it. He actually addresses it in one of the songs featured in his Killing Verse, which is interesting.
@@itiswhatitis4144 he doesn't do it anymore, he grew out of it and learned from it. just like many others, he was following the general trend in Korea w making hard rap music, which isn't even his preferred style of music. however, i think in 2018 or 2019 he genuinely changed and learned from his past mistakes. i think in an interview in 2020(?) he called himself out but i don't really remember tbh
Not my comment: He is talking about his identity as a rapper. He felt sounding more like a foreigner especially in the field of hip-hop, sounding like black people or pretending their swags and fashion was something Korean people think its better than being themselves. He realizes that that's not right that's not what he is pursuing with his music nor his identity. He finds himself as who he is and why he is rapping (big part being connected to God and his Christian path) and finding his true identity.
He calling out all these k-rappers who depend their careers on CA of black culture in order to pass as "good rappers". He said just because he is a rapper doesn't mean he "acts black" he doesn't need that he is korean and his art is enough for him to succeed
With the black thing, it's more about the fashion style. A lot of k-hiphop artist have dreads, wear saggy pants and stuff, since they associate this with hiphop and BeWhy is basically saying how that's not the way.
Bewhy is always deep with his lyrics, he is deeply spiritual, and every song I've heard from him is masterfully written- though sometimes its difficult to translate the meaning into English. I strongly recommend listening to his song "My Land", its about the Japanese occupation of Korea in the early 1900s and how it still effects Korean culture to this day. Bewhy truly shows how amazing Korean Hip-Hop is.
That "black face" line is him trying to express that he don't have to "be" black to do hiphop. Actually that line is "explained" further in his track called The Mainland, from the same album as Challan (The Movie Star). In The Mainland, he expresses that he was influenced by black artists (artists from "the mainland") and had tried to imitate them but as the song progresses, he tries to escape from "the mainland" and is hoping to define the new mainland. This "i don't want to imitate black artists despite being influenced by them" theme is scattered here and there in his album, The Movie Star. The Mainland is one track that vividly expresses it.
I discovered this artist a few months ago and absolutely loved everything I've been able to find online! I think you guys would really like him he really comes across as a really true authentic person and he just comes across like he just says it how it is and feelings be damned!
as an asian person myself - towards the black face lyric; yes this does exist within the asian community. for myslf i often am rejected from my own Hmong commuity accused as 'white washed' for example. Stemmed from fear of pre-judgement, being bullied, & rejected, by my own Hmong community that had resulted in me shutting them out. creating even more of a bias illusion for classmates and even parents. its hard to.... explain. its an indescribable unfortunate experience.
Thanks for the reaction, he's one of the best hiphop rappers if not the best in korea and he produces too, he got attacked by people many times as you can see in the video, please react to bewhy - gottasadae he's too fire🔥🔥🙏

He’s calling out culture appropriates in the korean hip hop seen who don’t know the difference between appreciation and appropriation hence, him saying dont you know why blackening my skin is not the answer.
