Being a current serving Petty Officer on HMS Defender and been in the Royal Navy for 20 years thus far, I absolutely love watching these old videos. Not much has changed in the way of how we do business, apart from maybe health and safety. I find it really interesting. I remember sailing past the Fearless and Intrepid a few times when they were tied up in the grave yard in 2002.
David Bober.. thanks for these. a link ( the Coventry ) was sent by my shipmate off the Achilles we were both boy sailors 1965/66 these videos bring back fond ( and disturbing) memories ( ( I'm 74), many thanks.
Took an overnight trip from Devonport to Portsmouth in Fearless at the beginning of 83. I was a Sea Cadet in TS Fearless Worcester. Boarded her via landing craft which were still in their Falklands camouflage. I'm amazed that she had such a long career for an RN vessel!
Loved a leander, great workhorses, I was lucky to have the Naiad. When you listen to the air attack and we have to think what it will be like in a war zone, 4 years later she was in a war zone for real.
Like the bit at 6:65 where everyone clambers on board Dreadnought and nary a life jacket in sight. Today's health and safety bods would be having a fit! :)
Probably achieved Tony Blair’s dream of a coastal force and not a world wide force. Since the Falklands war, the UK has been involved in more world wide incidents, that has made Mr Fucking Blair’s idea look an absolute shambles. When I was in the RN, we did have a world wide Navy, we still had a foothold in the Middle East and we still owned Hong Kong. Such a shame now that’s all gone!
@@flagwanker6346 The world is a different place, and the UK does not have the money to have a navy as big as it used to. Thatcher saw to that. The role of "world policeman" had passed the US, and we assist them, and other NATO members in the maintaining our interests. The only way to go back to the huge navy we had is to remake the empire, which is unlikely to be popular.

Xmas 1980, the 2nd Sea Lord said we had 88 major warships in his Xmas message to the fleet with just under 100,000 men and women(if I remember correctly) didn't take parliament very long to remedy that, no matter what colour tie they had on!
was onboard as an ro back in 92,4l2 mess and also in 3c for a stint, remember tank,rm,and des ,lro fearless always smelt or diesel, got used to it after a while.
That bootneck Rupert sounds a tozzer. The marines are well trained and don't need to show their officer that they have ,CLEANED, their weapons and checked all equipment. It's bullshit officer crap. I served on HMS INTREPID, the sister ship of HMS FEARLESS and the ships were more or less exactly the same except that INTREPIDS main mast was about 2 metered higher and the dock door was longer. I was on board between 85/88 with a spell of DQs in between but still wouldn't change it.

Well at least the ships worked then not the ball of nonsense like type 45 that lies broke and not much use only for new razor blades.
I served on Intrepid 1971 in the Far East .
@@stephenbethell9176 Awesome. I heard they had a lot of fires on them.

Fearless was my 2nd ship 1973 - 1975 (Intrepid was the 1st)! Happy days, fantastic memories and by god I miss her.
brilliant video - thanks for posting; it brings back wonderful memories of younger days.
Royal Navy officer H.M.S. Fearless L 10, H.M.S. Andromeda F57 & H.M.S. Dreadnought S101 and be the best, over & out.
Love this, my father sailed on the Lion as an RM from its first deployment in the early 60's

@@gregoryclark8217 Or increase taxes. Not sure that we need 80 ships now though - the Army is far too small and under-equipped.

IN THE FEARLESS I UNDERSTAND THAT BRIGADIER JULIAN THOMPSON AND COMODOR MICHAEL CLAPP WERE BOARDED AS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE LANDINGS
Did troop trials with her when she came out to Hong Kong in 1967
Fearless my first sea draft 83 to late 85
@0:12 last Trafalgar war officer lol

HMS FEARLESS, COMMAND SHIP IN OPERATION AMPHIBIA - SOUTH ATLANTIC WAR 1982
Anyone know the name of the Middy on the bridge of Fearless? I'm sure I was at Dartmouth with him.
Martin Westwood, He served on 845 Sqdn @ Yeovilton 83-84, I know he made Captain some time later.
@@stevel7865 Thanks. I shall have to dig through a few old photos
Is that Ark Royal sat in the background as Fearless pulls into port?

Don't they still or now do it on active ships on active patrols when the opportunity allows
Tiffy training ship along with Intrepid.
