Man, the Kalevala has some messed up stories. The English translation is awkward and grating at times, but the original Finnish has a lyrical/musical quality to it, I imagine the stories were meant to be sung... Thus, it makes total sense to use it as a source for songs. Time to learn Finnish so I can read the Kalevala's songs in it's full disturbing, majestic glory.
Good luck. Finnish in itself is ranked as one of the hardest languages, and the Kalevala is written in an older variety of it which can be tough for foreigners. But my hats off to you if you'll do it!
The reason it sounds slightly awkward in English is because the original text is built on rephrasing and repetition. They actually did a pretty good job with the translation, although it obviously loses some of the original lyricism.
Truly they lie, they talk utter nonsense Who say that music reckon that the kantele Fashioned by gOD Out a great pike's shoulders From the water-dog's hooked bones It was molded from sorrow Its belly of hard days Its soundboard from endless woes Strings gathered from torments And its pegs from other ills Truly they lie they talk utter nonsense Songwriter: Esa Holopainen
