Reminds me of the time I kicked a spinning rod / reel off the deck. Spun around to try and grab it and stepped on a pair of expensive sunglasses
Don't know which the wife found funnier - me trying to grab it when it went over or my 30 minutes walking around the boat in vain trying to find the rod - with no pants on. (it was cool that day and did not want to sit the rest of the day with wet clothes on)

Ah man, that sucks! Dollar store pool noodles are a life saver. I have em' on my paddles too.
Almost lost a ring trap yesterday the same way crabbing from a pier (rope came untied). Thankfully I was able to throw weight and a big hook on my fishing pole then drag it around the bottom for a while to fish it out. Was a major pain though, even knowing where the trap was roughly. Probably impossible on the open water.
