    SIr Simon put this piece on the map - whatever the controversies have been over the years we lovers of Mahler owe him something

    The culmination of his previous 9 symphonies. What a finale to Mahler's
    legacy as a symphonist.

      Its as though we dissipate in the mist of the Unknown, yet it is that which the music is! Mahler seems like a Buddha!

    So beautiful! Angst and sweetness, I keep listening to it, especially from min 18:42 and on. Grazie maestro Rattle!

      I wish it could make up it's mind if it wants to be romantic or apprehensive. 🙄 I know which one I'd rather be.

    I've heard Valery Gergiev conducting you guys in this movement as a bonus piece on your Mahler 2 album from 2009. But this is my favorite version of this beautiful Adagio I have heard yet. I only know of 5 versions of this Adagio including this one, but out of the 5, I have got to say this one ticks all the boxes for me. Sir Simon conducting you guys in this movement is just ❤❤ so 👏👏 and congrats on 4.5k views on my favorite part of this piece.

      I've heard Gerviev, then heard Rattle here. Neither is a match for Bernstein/Vienna Phil. th-cam.com/video/vHyV8noUXC0/w-d-xo.html. In fact, neither Gergiev nor Rattle is as good as Abbado with Lucerne. Just listen. don't watch. Listen, with the score if you can. And remember, this is Mahler, not some second-rate German romantic, which is what Rattle gives us. On second hearing, it's not so bad but still falls short of Bernstein. Too fussy with details. One thing's for sure, though, Rattle is a master of the baton.

      @@GTEd yes Simon is master of the baton but haven't heard Bernstein and Vienna yet, but I like the sound of it.

    Simon Rattle never surpassed his first Mahler 10 he made with Bournemouth Symphony when he was 25. That recording may well be the best recording he ever made

      Remember listening to that recording - vinyl! - years ago at Uni. Blew my mind. Its the definitive Mahler 10 for me.

      @lafolia1, my thoughts exactly! That performance with the Bournemouth Symphony from 1980, while not as musically clean as his BPO performance, is still my favorite. Never before or since, has Mahler's 10th been played with such raw emotion and visceral intensity as his 1980 performance.

    That C natural in the Violins at 17:44 should be a C sharp.

      There's a few differences from other Cooke versions, usually just semitone changes. For example the horns at 16:48 or the strings at 22:32. I don't know why though.

    I'm currently rewriting this heart-wrenching movement for brass ensemble; that high A played by the trumpet at the 19th minute will be sustained by my part (Horn 1), at the same height.

    my favorite conductor now with the LSO - thanks so much for this, Mahler wanted to finish this symphony as he thought he could outlive Beethoven who died after the 9th was finished, except that someone found the score to Beethoven's 10th years later, if that story is true/??

    • @LondonSymphonyOrchestra
      @LondonSymphonyOrchestra  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Arlene, some sketches were found after Beethoven had died which many think were intended to be a tenth symphony, although they weren't labelled as such. It has actually been put together into a version that can be performed!

      thank you - who knows what really happened - Mahler was superstitious as many musicians were, but I'm so glad at least this portion of his 10th is recreated here - Simon is a worthy successor to Bruno and Lenny as a Mahler conductor, in my opinion, his knowledge of all things Mahler is amazing and he never needs a score..

    • @EASYTIGER10
      @EASYTIGER10 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When Mahler finished the 9th he should have renamed Das Lied von der Erde the 9th and called the new symphony the 10th. That way he'd trick fate!

    It seems one would need the assistance of both (A) European figured bass and (B) American jazz theory chord analysis to comprehensively grasp what is going on here in Mahler's harmony that at times is stretched to the limits of tonality. From biographical data, I assume the movement expresses the tremendous internal and external conflicts going at the life's end of a dying musical genius. Gustav's gift for melody is the thread that sustains the emotional torment he shares with us, as we safely listen to his personal trauma as privileged onlookers. This boiling performance 'Cookes' as in a gushing oil 'Deryck' that 'Rattles' the rafters.

    Si hay algo que es muy molesto es que se interrumpa la musica por anuncios que no tienen nada que ver con el video y en momentos inapropiados. Debemos hacer algo porque en todas partes ponen anuncios banales y productos inutiles.

      thanks for pointing these out. TH-cam seems to have turned on mid-roll ads automatically across all videos and so we're having to go back through and switch them all off again one by one. We have a lot of videos...

    Bernstein conducting the Vienna Philharmonic is streets ahead of this performance which sounds alternately anemic and overblown. There is little smoothness in the transitional passages and soloists generally sound like they're mostly sightreading the movement. 3 out of 5 marks.
