The Queen's Gambit 1x7 - "End Game" WHAT A PERFECT SHOW!

  • I have finally finished The Queens Gambit, and what a ride this one has been. I really appreciated Beths story throughout the series. A lot of ups and a lot of downs.
    She was such a human character, flawed but beautiful and always striving to do better and also putting herself first. Meeting wonderful friends along the way and having that support in something she loved doing was beautiful to watch.
    I say this in the reaction, "She should have been dead." Because it all just hit me so hard that Beth was meant to die in the beginning along with her mother but she survived and then continued to survive despite every roadblock, obstacle and hurdle placed in her way, even if sometimes by her own doing. Even if Beth is fictional character I could relate to her struggles and I know many more people could too.
    So to see her not only win chess but to win at life and overcome her demons is an inspiration to watch! Couldn't have asked for a better way to end this series, just so thankful I had a chance to watch this show and also share my reactions with a bunch of nice strangers, thank you.

    Fun fact: the crazy hair guy is a VERY clear stand in for Mikhail Tal, who is my favorite chess player ever. I was immensely glad they made him as gracious and charming as I’ve understood him to be in real life.
    And the fact that Borgov applauded her at the end of the game is a reference to game 4 of the Fischer-Spassky world championship match when Spassky rose and clapped for Fischer after his defeat.

    You were saying her final outfit in the show (the white winter outfit) was beautiful. That outfit is inspired by the white Queen chess piece. In chess, when a pawn moves forward 7 squares to the other side, the piece can upgrade to a queen. There are 7 episodes in the show. Beth grew from pawn to the queen.

    • @TheNauglafel
      @TheNauglafel ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I knew her outfit in the finale was a reference to queen chess piece but I didn't know there was such an interesting connection to the number of the episodes and how a pawn becomes queen in 7 moves.. That adds so much more meaning to the ending.. Thank you for the info :-)

    What makes the Queens Gambit so good is that it's grounded, the characters are complicated like real people are. They have flaws, they aren't perfect, they make mistakes and learn from them.
    At it's heart, queens gambit is not about Beth overcoming other players, its about her overcoming her own addictions.

    Beth Harmon is a female protagonist where men and women alike can almost unanimously agree is a near perfect example of what a main character is supposed to be written. She's without a doubt in my top 10 that's for sure. 😊🏆🎆

    I am so conditioned to characters f-g each other over in stories and in life that I kept waiting for something to go wrong and for someone else to harm her, betray her etc. Sometimes you get back more than you give and the people in her life that she had disappointed, broke their hearts, didnt heed advice from, still came together to be caring and loving towards her. That was not something I was use to seeing in a story. Probably why it hit me so hard and with so much emotion. She had people who would not give up on her and I feel gave her more than she gave them out of love and friendship. A gift and lesson for the rest of her life. Loved your reaction and commentary to this show and thanks for posting! ✌️🌈🙂!

      Haha I am as well, plus unreal life so I was so afraid someone was going to screw her and her friends showed up for her every time. It was beautiful to see and honestly should be the standard of how relationships are in general, sadly too many of us have been really hurt so it is hard to trust completely but definitely not impossible! Loved this show and this episode especially!

    I think I watched this series twice last year, before seeing your reaction to it, and watching you watch the show, I realized something that I think I hadn't fully considered before. In the first two or three episodes, you kept saying "Please don't let (Mr. Shaibel/Alma/Beltik/Benny) be bad for Beth." And of course, none of them are, as we find out. And experiencing this through your eyes this time, I came to realize that really the ONLY enemy Beth has in the entire story is herself. And thankfully she has people around her that support her and help her with that enemy.

    Yup, this show is a marvel just like her. It breaks all writing stereotypes, it's so beautiful and uplifting. Of course they put in the work, from a chess aspect, the games are great, original, they used great chess masters as advisors. Anya Taylor-Joy is a superstar. The people who make shows as great as this (Scott Frank) or Chernobyl for example, should be given real trust and money to make any project they want

      @@Bayard1503 its overarching narrative is false and propagandist . deliberately so. and to do that they depict some events as exact opposite of what really happened .
      to take a non spoilerly example from early in 1st episode -
      in show legasov is depicted as sending his "tapes" (in show they are about investigation and results ), in secret, avoiding surveillance, to presumably dissidents while living alone . in reality privileged family man legasov was a highly placed member of ruling (reform) faction of state ( and yes that state was faction ridden, and not monolithic as depicted, not only in this show ), who btw outranked boris in hierarchy ( in show boris absurdly threaten to throw him out of a helicopter. ) . his "tapes" which had not much to do with investigation (in which he was not involved at all ) but about reforms he was proposing ( heroic in their own way ) were sent to editor of pravda, the main state newspaper, and like him a member of ruling faction. legasov's antagonists, who drove him to his death, were not the state, but his fellow scientists, who thought his reforms, which among other things, called for seeking beyond established scientific opinion when evaluating and approving major projects like nuclear power stations, were a danger to them and their institutional position.
      in show exact opposite is depicted.

    Anya Taylor Joy has a very unearthly quality. Her best roles are things like this, The Northman, and the Witch. She has a certain quality that is difficult to put into words. Like if you told me she was a mythical creature like an elf or a fairy or a dryad, I'd be like "makes sense."
    As an aside, the white queen outfit at the end is amazing.

    Fantastic reaction. Came away liking you as much as the QG. Just a perfect show. Brilliant writing that keeps setting up potentially cliched plot points and then subverts them all, outstanding acting, direction, costumes and set design. Just glorious stuff. Anya Taylor Joy has been a favorite since her breakout in the Witch, and she was just staggeringly great in this. She continues to pick interesting projects and not follow the expected new starlet paths. She's just getting started too. I love so much the fact that despite all the possibilities for enemies or foils throughout, her enemy was always herself and it was all the people who came to care about her who helped her win the battle with her own demons.

    This is one of my favorite mini-series, and the other one is the Night Manager. The concept of showing how she was able to see her trying out the permutations of play in the ceiling was brilliant, especially in the last game with the pieces actually looking down at her instead of the reverse. I enjoyed your warm reactions to the last episode. I understand your reactions to the political aspects brought up by her "body guard" but you are judging it from today's standards. This story takes place in the 1960s (1969 for this competition). In 1962, the Cold War took a most dangerous turn for the entire world when the US and Soviet Union (not Russia) then were in a 35 day confrontation about nuclear missile placements known as the Cuban Missile crisis. The US and Soviet Union were probably hours away from launching nuclear missiles at each other. The Soviet Union backed down just minutes from the ships confronting each other. Also, 1962 was not very far from 1954 when the Korean war ended, a war between Communism (North Korea and China) against the US. So the Soviet Union on the communist side and the US were in a constant ideological battle that included great spying on each other. I hope you are able to read up a little bit about the geopolitics of that time. Judging from the numbers of subscribers, you don't need me to tell you you are doing good work. I hope you gain many more subscribers. I subscribed.

    First: it wasn’t Russia, it was the Soviet Union. This was during the height of the Cold War. Soviets were not allowed OUT of their country because they tended not to come back. If you were important and had to go out of the Soviet Union the KGB would send agents to “chaperon” you. It was also extremely hard for Americans to go there and when they did the KGB would have agents following them and bugging their rooms and phone calls. Yes, this is a big deal that she is there. Yes, it’s very serious.

    I read _The Queen's Gambit_ by Walter Tevis before I started watching the series. I stopped after Episode 4 because I felt closure with how Beth's journey was going to end, but your review has made me want to go back and watch it. Other channels cover the Marvel and _Star Wars_ shows or _Arcane_ but I haven't seen anyone else review _The Queen's Gambit_ , certainly not with this much thought and passion.
    I'd love to eventually hear more of your thoughts about how the film industry is changing. I'm 49 and used to go to theaters 30-40 times a year. Now it's once or twice a year and that may not even be to see new films. It's possible that "Hollywood" hasn't changed as much as me.

    I'm not sure you're allowed to adjourn anymore since any modern computing equipment gives an unfair advantage. The pieces and board, incidentally, did not always look like this or carry the same name, and there wasn't a queen on old boards. King's had advisors called a vizier (keeping in mind that chess started in the east and when it hit the middle east the vizier was a common Muslim piece). When chess reached Europe, it was common for kings to have queens. With the rise of Catholicism, bishops also became common pieces.

    The Russians work in teams and Beth has a team too.
    This is a movie recommendation. You should watch Good Will Hunting.

    The fed telling her to tell him if he does anything, even making random signs. And reference Kasparov talking about psychological warfare being used with deep blue, just goes to show that both sides are paying attention to ritualistically tiny detail. How else to win?

    Ms. Snow, have you had the opportunity to read the novel, The Queen's Gambit?
    P.S. Have you ever considered doing a reprise on "The Queen's Gambit"?

    Cold war Russia was -=very=- serious. About this time we we struggling with East and West Berlin in Germany. Around this time was the Cuban Missile Crisis - the cold war was nearly a hot, end of the world war. The USSR (controlled by Russia) included the Warsaw Pact nations and getting in/out required many diplomatic papers. Traveling from one section of Russia to another required travel orders. If you didn't have them, you could be tortured, go to jail, or die - maybe all three. Compare it to modern North Korea - that bad.

    Great reaction! For another intense TV show involving Russians, try the spy thriller 'The Americans'.

    This is one of the worst last episodes of a show I've seen. Terrible, schmaltzy, sentimental nonsense. I liked the first few episodes, but then it starts to lose its way and ends with this Disney guff.

    • @MHonari
      @MHonari 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I understand your dissatisfaction, but I think the story of overcoming difficulties and reaching a happy ending, although unrealistic and too hackneyed to be artistic, is an archetypal story that will never die. There's a reason why Disney animations have such plots. I believe children and teenagers need such stories so they can contextualize hardships, learn delayed gratification, and aspire to greatness.

    • @timcliffsmith
      @timcliffsmith 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MHonari Endings are notoriously difficult of course. Maybe you're right about children and teenagers, but I'm 47, so it just came off as preposterous. Plus, I don't have a problem with happy endings, but this was just sloppy writing.
