  • FrontierScientists.com - For weavers using Alutiiq Native techniques on Kodiak Island, Alaska, collecting and curing grass is an important step to take before beginning basket weaving.
FrontierScientists investigates Alaska Native basket weaving with modern-day artists who carry on ancient traditions from the Alutiiq and other Arctic cultural groups. Artifacts at the Alutiiq Museum, as well as Russian collections, help preserve original examples of Native weaving.

Cute video but completely misleading title - it didn't explain actually curing grass or collecting it. It didn't even explain which type of grass is best, or what the literal steps are to cure it correctly. This video only vaguely talked about grass curing, not even including the basic steps of 'how to'. It's unfortunate, but I'll not dislike the video because the content is still enjoyable :)

I have been trying to teach myself grass basket making through TH-cam vidios and books. I know that grass is supposed to be 'aged' a year, but I don't really understand the process of curing vs drying. I only know that some of my grass ends up strong at the end of the year and sometimes it is brittle. Can you explain the differences between curing and drying?
