If you have one with green markings like the video it's worth to get the earlier ones - a silver (not sanded) or black with white markings. The manufacturer logo on the front is the giveaway but there are some fakes going around as well... the early 2 models are better than the later ones
Rehoused Helios 44-2 lenses (and a Jupiter-9), from Iron Glass, were used for quite a few shots in Matt Reeves' The Batman in mostly night shots, with great results. Cine-modded versions from Iron Glass can be had for $200, not much more than an eBay modded Helios. So...
Rather 2000+ dollars, they have a cheaper (unfortunately) Valdai versions for 200 dollars, but what you wrote about Batman, these lenses were the Awesome Best category.
There are 2 types of lenses offered by Iron Glass: rehoused (the $2000+ ones) and cine-modded (the $200 ones, Helios included). Replied to both of you already, but apparently the person running this channel or YT sees it fit to delete comments. :)
@@justaguyfromeurope Thank you both, greatly appreciated! Given all this I might get the btf-lenses Helios, which seems to be somewhere inbetween these two (as far as the work/quality control done before selling).
i will use it for the ursa 12k - do you recommend other surrealistic looking oldschool lenses? the Mir 1b doesnt work on the Ursa 12kPL Mount Version i think.
If you get the chance to get a cheap Cinema version I would take it. But since the normal version is pretty cheap I would just get both. One for flares and one for clean shots without flares. You can also buy the oval inlays on eBay or Etsy and install them yourself, but unfortunately there are currently no more with the fishing line.
This lens is far from sharp from what I've experienced... th-cam.com/video/12XR0-azfz0/w-d-xo.html Even when I try to focus my object it's too "creamy" lol - weird lens, maybe I got a shitty one, not sure...
No matter what lens I look up on the internet. I keep going back to this. I have one but I need another one now.

Wait what? Are we talking about the same lenses here? Those Iron Glass Rehouses go for several thousand dollars each I'm quite sure?

If you add the fishing line in front of the front element or behind the rear element it will not be in focus and the bokeh will not show it .
Can't it be done without that vertical wire?

Ugh, is that AI voiceover I hear?
I don’t know why they keep doing that. I don’t care if the filmmaker has a lisp or accent, I like human voices better ❤

Your videos are great, but the for an IA voice and no real person is quite a no-go for a videography channel. You should think about that...
So this lens doesn’t actually give you a wider image? (2x or 1.8x)
Correct. This is NOT an anamorphic lens, which would give you a wider image. Rather, the lens is modified to fake some anamorphic elements
