  • Join me, MauLer, Eric July and Chris Gore as we cover the news and events of the week. The Little Mermaid is predicted to win big for Disney at the summer box office. Guardians of the Galaxy opened with a tepid opening weekend, but how bad will be its second week dropoff? And Disney+ has lost 4 Million suscribers this quarter.

I thought Tatiana wasn't real? I vaguely recall Drinker being asked about her in a superchat and confirming that she didn't exist. Also, I'm pretty sure he's married with a kid, at least if the bio on the back of his first book is to be believed.
EDIT: I checked my copy and Drinker is married it seems. At least he was in 2012 at the time of writing his first novel since he mentions his wife, Susan in the Acknowledgements and thanks her for enduring "many nights of me locking myself in the office to write, and whose support meant more than I ever admitted". Also, it states that he "currently lives with his wife and son".

I literally lost a job opportunity because every time I called this lady was "away," and then I finally did get the paper I needed from her it was the wrong one and the fingerprint place couldn't process me on a Friday. The offices were closed on Sat/Sun and I had 2 jobs on Monday. Tuesday, I literally had to wait next to her parking spot to talk to her and get that paper, which she played dumb for 10 minutes about. @@o00nemesis00o The original tale's prince treated the mermaid as a sister. It was a short period, he was obviously kind. I believe the original tale had more in common with the mermaid's desire for a relationship with the Christian God.

  • @enoeht
    @enoeht ปีที่แล้ว +55

A few rambling thoughts about the Little Mermaid:
    1) every Disney Renaissance film features an "I want" song, in which the main character plainly states their desires and objectives in musical form. For Ariel, her "I want" is NOT actually Prince Eric. She is attracted to him, certainly, but it's more what he represents than who he is as a person (after all she doesn't even know him as a person, she's infatuated with an idea). Her grotto is full of items and artifacts from the surface world because THAT is what she actually wants. She wants to live and walk among the people who live on land, and if that means also snagging a pretty boy as part of the package deal all the better.
If you listen to Part of Your World very little of the song is actually about her infatuation. I feel like people fundamentally misunderstand Ariel's motivation as a character in this way.
    2) Ariel is the PoV character of the film, but her father is the actual main character. Ariel doesn't actually go on an arc throughout the movie, she doesn't really learn any lessons or fundamentally change as a person. She has a desire, she gets it, some hijinks in the middle.
King Triton, on the other hand, actually does have an arc. He's the one who needs to learn how to let his beloved daughter go & be independent. He's the one who begins as an arrogant & egotistical (but ultimately well-meaning & loving) King & Father. He has to struggle with the pain of failing to understand & respect his daughter, he has to learn to let her go. It's really his story told through her eyes.
How much do you want to bet all of that gets thrown out in the remake?

Again people, I've said it before:
All HOLLYWOOD studios or streaming services, in general, don't care about diversity, minorities, or representing “the world we live in today”. What Hollywood care about is business. And randomly race/gender/ethnicity/sexuality (OR ANY OTHER "fancy" WAY....) swapping established characters is a great way to drive up business. Because they know what they're doing will bring controversy. But CONTROVERSY BRINGS PUBICITY, therefore PUBLICITY MEANS BUSINESS. They don't care how many people dislike/like the new changes to a product when they release the news on Twitter, TH-cam or any social media. If it brings them views, or they learn that people are sharing said postings, they'll profit off it.
And the marketing in Hollywood is ABSOLUTELY aware of this.

Animation is great because it lets you stylize the world to match the story. When you try and make it 'realistic' to get the grey slurry that is the new 'Peter Pan' just sucking the life out of what little story's left, because the animators are terrified that too many bright colors is gonna expose how bad the CGI actually is...

Joining Chris Gore's example of enjoying What's Happening as a kid, three of my favorite shows growing up (and i still enjoy them as an adult) were Sanford and Son, Golden Girls, and Family Matters. I could see myself and my father and other family in all of them and found them relatable regardless of the immutable characteristics of their characters. Back in the '80s and '90s growing up, the only "racism" was kids at school using stereotypical humor BECAUSE we knew how ridiculous it was to mock someone for something like skin tone. It's just dumb but people today are trained and indoctrinated to be narcissistic, which is why so many people claim to belong to certain members of the alphabet squad. It really makes me sad for them because in the end, we are all just looking for significance from others. Gen Z gets theirs from the negative reinforcement of people offending them and realizing that the real world isn't all about them. It is all about changing other people's view of them when we used to take queues from social interactions to change ourselves, which is the only thing any of us can do anyway.

It blows my mind how much money Lucasfilm could have made if they just sat down at the start, filtered out the top 20% of ideas that have been kicking around the EU and took 2% of those and still had several grand epics to tell from many eras of the ST galaxy. A real story group would then lay it all out, figure how to build the most tension through the order of release and format, and decide the different tones each would be told through. The directors, writers, and talent would then be intuitive to cast so they reflect the tone. They would then have a multiple audience offering that would last for decades. The royalties of the original creators would still be far, far less than the disappointment of their property now.

The remake phenomenon is not a particularly Hollywood problem, it is a mainstream entertainment issue - i call it the Hairspray Effect. Follow me here: Jon Waters released Hairspray in 1988, to strong reviews and it became a cult favorite.
So in 2002 a Broadway musical was released. In 2007, Hollywood decided to make a film based on the musical. Then 2016, there was a live broadcast of the musical based on the second film.
This illustrates the cliched “creative bankruptcy” that we have seen over the last several years in the film/television/Broadway/music business.

46:14 Glad you picked up on that. As a father of small girls, I've been forced to watch the original like 37 times in the last 4 years. This statement reeks of not understanding Ariel's motivation. Her love of Eric was the inciting incident, but she always wanted to go to the surface. She always wanted to explore and experience, and if you listen to how she explains it and the lyrics of the song, after Eric it's about experiencing it with him. This comment reeks of selfishness.
Idk, I could be wrong, the new plot could be about Ariel going to the surface to invent a never ending supply of food or cure a viral outbreak, but I'm expecting every problem (even Ariel taking Ursula's deal) will somehow be blamed on her Dad or Eric, and in the end Ariel will save everyone without any help.

Way I pick car repair shops is I hit up the Google reviews, sorting "Worst Reviews" first -- The shop that replies to every 1-star review with a petty snipe, calling the critic a liar or belligerent; that's the shop I _never_ go to. Doesn't matter if they get 4.5 stars average. If they got time to run around antagonizing every bad review, they're just gonna waste my time and money.
"Social issue" writers are the same energy. Petulant, way too much time on their hands, and so defeated by life that a bad review is an existential threat.

The biggest problem with streaming is that by its nature you can't saturate the market. If people find a service they are significantly less likely to join an 2nd service. If they have 2 services they are even less likely to get a 3rd service. If they have 3 services they are really not going to get a 4th unless this is someone part of their job like a media critic.
There is also only a limited amount of talent that can be ramped up. You can't just magically hire people to become crew for all these streaming services' production and NOT get a major drop in quality. And a successful show doesn't actually mean the crew is high quality either. So you are going to get a lot of bad people who are just bad because they are not suited for the job and you are going to get bad people who are bad because they lack the experience. These people you could absorb into the system and after years they would get better... IF they were trained by high quality mentors. But when you ramp up production this high you you dilute the talent and the ability to train people and you end up creating shite.
This shite programing causes people to question the value of the services they are getting so they abandon services they don't feel give them value. Eventually once all these streaming service die and you are left with a few, you will see a consolidation of this form of media and we will get higher quality programming but that isn't a quick fix because a lot of new talent that could have been train to be good crew or writers have learn bad habits and they have lost years of training and at a certain point they will stop thinking they need to learn and you have lost that window to train them.
There isn't enough money to sustain the services, there aren't enough crews to make the shows at high quality and there are not enough writers than know how to write TV, or movies and they are not the same skill set. This create a downward spiral because money dries out as people stop subscribing and you just created a mediocre generation of behind the scenes talent so it isn't like this will make it easy to find the best people as there will be so much dross created. So as the money shrinks so does the ability to pay for good talent and so you are not able to create better shows which cause more people to unsubscribe.
People wanted to become Netflix but overnight forgetting the Netflix too decades to get where it is today. You can't speedrun success.

In regards to Chris Gore talking about the purpose of art: I think Western culture’s understanding of that purpose has changed. The dominant narrative structure in modern storytelling is power fantasy (I.e. the dominance of superhero films), where the whole point is to transpose yourself in the main protagonist’s shoes and experience wish fulfillment. In order for art to serve the purpose of allowing its viewers to empathize with people different than us, then we (as a civilization) have to demand more from our art aside from fantasy and wish fulfillment.

I've worked in one of the entertainment businesses for a few decades. Used to be 95% men and it got very raunchy in the old days. Now we got a big influx of women and other diversity hires (as required now) so it's all business as no one wants a visit from HR. Everyone is on edge for fear of offending the large number of 20-somethings that have been hired the past couple years. Plus, all writing is "safe" so not to offend the audience. Sad.
