There's a term for "siblings cannot get married in the same year". It's called "Sukob" or "Sukob sa kasal" There's also the "Money Dance" where the bride and groom dance to slow music while guests pin money (notes) on them. This is a way to help the new couple get started with their married life.
whooa, is "sukob" kind of like "kilig" where there's no definite definition? Because I know kasal means wedding/marriage right? And omg! I just realized I forgot about the money dance!!!
Youre not allowed to travel before the wedding so the bride/groom dont get into accidents - which makes sense coz you dont want to be widowed before youre actually married lol. You forgot the one where husband carries the wife across the threshold :) My parents did that one, it was fun to hear about it lol
Oh yeah! the husband carrying across a threshold. When your parents did it, was it across the threshold at home? (i.e. do you do this for any threshold or your home threshold? or the first threshold you pass after the wedding)
The veil signifies fidelity, I think. I just guessed this. But since the veil covers the couple, it surely has something to do with the couple just "looking at each other." The cord symbolizes the tie that binds the couple - their love and care for each other. The coins, wishing for wealth and prosperity for the newly wed. The coins inside the cage-like container is called aras. Another superstition is that if one of the candles lit during the wedding has been extinguished by air or it didn't light at once, expect that there will be dark days (hardships) coming to the lives of the couple, which will test their love for each other. Three days of wedding feast often happens in the provinces. If I am not mistaken, in my mother's side of the family, they have this paharana (serenade) and pasayaw (dance) two days before the wedding. This is for the merriment of the both side of the family. Then, the "bisperas" or the wedding eve. Another day of festivities! Food, drinks, and dances are always present. Then the wedding itself. One of the wedding traditions in my mother's province is the "pasabit" where people attending the wedding, especially the sponsors, friends, and well-wishers put real paper money or bag of coins on the dress of the couple while they are dancing. It is to help the couple to start their family. Another wedding superstition is that the girl should not try the wedding dress or gown before the wedding for it will ruin everything. In short, the wedding will not push through. Paganda nang paganda ang mga talakayan dito (The discussion here becomes more interesting). :) Mahal ka namin, Rachel B!
I read someone where that the superstition about the candle also applies if one candle burns out before the other, whoever is holding the candle will die first 😭 Thank you for explaining the three day weddings, I can imagine all the happiness for three days straight of the wedding. I always knew about the money dance, but never knew it was called "Pasabit" 😍 As time goes by, I'm learning that traditions and superstitions are more derived from provincial areas. It's nice to know that a lot of the traditions you talked about are ones I've witness growing up.
I’m already obsessed with your videos 🥺 I’m biracial, and my dad’s Filipino culture was unfortunately stripped away and have no family. So it’s great to watch these videos!
When she said don't drop the ring I started laughing! Because, when my uncle and auntie was getting married my cousin was like 4-5 yrs old and accidentally dropped the ring 😂😂😂
They also say that the groom must not see the bride in her wedding dress before the wedding ceremony. They say if it happens, the wedding will not push through
It rained only during our wedding. Literally was bright and sunny before, and gorgeous after. We took it as a blessing after I got over my westernized 'I wanted to get married outside' moment. Still happily married 💜
I grew up in America but raised in home like in the Philippines. Being married to significant other who is not Filipino but the traditions and beliefs from my family were overbearing and we decided to make small wedding and intimate. I dont like the traditions when its suppose to make you happy but overall I believe to do th as ditonal wedding is just allowing your family.to have saying on your special day. Traditions or superstitions I believe in none but we are still happily married even though my family judged us bc we didnt follow any of their terms 😊🙏💕
You forgot to mention the "pangasawa" (in bisaya) means the groom and his family will go to the house of the girl and ask the hand or the permission and blessings of the girls parents and bring a lot food foods that they can and in the house they will discus about the couple and the wedding details and also getting to know each others side it is the one of the most important cause it will tell if the two parties will understand each other or not and if they dont the wedding might not be postponed or cancelled.
I heard that if your gonna propose and you want to show your fiance the ring that it is bad luck if the man puts it on his finger before the lady. Even if your just showing it to them. Have you heard of this?
No pearls? OK. No long trips? I'M TRAVELING FROM USA TO HONG KONG TO GET MARRIED!!! My Filipina fiancee is fine with that. 3 days long? NOPE! 1 day long, no honeymoon UNTIL I move her to USA, and we are in 100% agreement on the details. We are going to try to live stream the wedding, so cell phones will be falling all over the place. LOL! Yeah right about the rain and having a bird poop on your head is good luck in Ireland too. HA! GARTER! They are called GARTERS and are best removed by the groom with his teeth. Thumbs up for the attempt. You did make me laugh!
The cord represent union of body and soul, that's a catholic tradition for the sacrament of matrimony and not a superstition. On the other hand do not let candle unlit because it's badluck, doves should be set free and should fly as far as they can because it's also badluck if they stay. And from my province some believe that using a seperated couple's things will repeat the cycle.
. the candles for both the groom and bride should be guarded by the best man and maid of honor ..and not let them go out.. iz signifies life.. if the flame of either or both go out.. death is exoected.. after the wedding ceremony.. the race by the groom and bride out of the church.. whoever gets put first.. would be the dominated spousd of the couple..
Kind of funny because superstitions are just a way that people put their fears and worries into culture. I doubt that if you looked at weddings would actually broke these quote-unquote superstitions anything ever happened. That's why I sometimes you just got to tell culture to kiss your.....
:( :( :( I had to break a few of these for my wedding bc of my hubs. His sister got married in the same year and his mom requested I wear her mom's pearl earrings (which I had to, sigh, can't start family drama early on) oh well...they are haole so I guess it's ok? :P
Pagkaing Pal haha I'm sure you're good because it's not like they know about the Filipino Superstitions ☺️ Are you also from Hawaii?! I caught that "haole" 😜
I finally heard your philipino accent at the end in the last 2-3 words. You have 21k view and 9700 subscribers, that's not right. People not clicking subscribe.
Aww you're too kind! Also, I figured there's a filipino accent SOMEWHERE in there. I've been surrounded by so many cultures all my life, I have fusion accent and can't tell myself what it sounds like.
Aimee Santos Munroe Someone mentioned it's a way to help out the newlywed couple start up their new life together. And my mom says it's also for prosperity for the marriage :)

Rachel Bulosan and yes, kasal means wedding :)
So cool, I love that I'm learning so much from reading comments 😍
Rachel Bulosan I wish to meet you when you come to the Philippines but tomorrow(?) I'm meeting Ate Jessica 😁😁😁

Rachel Bulosan I think it was the first threshold after the wedding 🙂
Duly noted for my future wedding day 😆

Candle- longevity… vain, my aunt said represent home(to stay in). If it fall, it means fragile. Rope, from my aunt, strong partnership (no adultery).

its a unity cord to symbolize the unity of the man & woman.
