  • ►In our second episode of Race Cars Explained, we focus on another crucial, yet not really thought about system of a race car-the fuel system. The fuel system is more involved than you might imagine as it encompasses a multitude of components. Fuel cell, multiple fuel pickups working in unison, special fuel filling configurations, and even more accurate ways to measure the amount of fuel that remains in the car; these are just some of the many parts that make up the system.

Excellent presentation. I don't own a track car, but I always wanted to know how a fuel cell works.

That was cool. I like to learn and these episodes really help my understanding of what all is involved. Question: how often does the foam in the Fuel Cell need to be changed out?

Glad you're enjoying the series GMAN! So the foam SHOULD last the life of the fuel cell, but last season we actually had to remove as much of the foam as we could on a race weekend, because one of the cars foam began deteriorating and clogging the fuel pump and jet pumps. It was a known issue by VW Motorsport but never remedied unfortunately.

    Hi. excuse me
I have a 2016 GOLF GTI TCR and always the fuel pressure drops to 1~2BAR after about 2~3 hours of operation. even lower. lead to flameout. . Power off, then on again for a while, and it works normally again. .During this time, the fuel pump/filter/pipe. Replaced and cleaned. It's still the same. I would like to ask what might be the problem. thanks
