I have a 1962 Gibson Les Paul GA-40T Crestline in 100 percent stock condition. It’s almost mint and still has the cover in good shape. I might however have to get it recapped and regrounded properly with a 3 prong cable. It actually does have a primitive grounding system in the form of a little wire coming out above the two prongs with an alligator clip on the end that you’re supposed to ground off on the wall outlet.

    • @matthewf1979
      @matthewf1979 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@Factory_Muff Maintenance on that era of Gibson manufactured amps is kinda a pain. If it’s in original condition it probably needs almost all of the caps replaced. Except the ceramic/mica caps of course.
Those Sprague “Black Beauties” and “Bumblebee” film caps haven’t fared well over the past 60+ years. They have a failure rate that exceeds the yellow Astron caps that Fender used back then. Most of those have been replaced by now.
I believe Brad has a few older videos on those amps if you want to do the work yourself. It’s not particularly hard, it just takes a lot more time than a Fender of the same era.

    • @Factory_Muff
      @Factory_Muff ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@matthewf1979 I’ve watched those videos years ago? As as I’ve had the amp in this same condition since 2010 and have been trying to get Brad to do it for me several times without success. I’m not qualified to even attempt anything close to doing it myself: I’d absolutely butcher it. Electronics and soldering are not my specialties by any means. I have zero training, knowledge, or ambition.

I have to say too that culturally we're miles apart. I was really enjoying one of your videos about fixing some guys boutique amp but the designer and builder had painted or gooped the inside with red paint so as to obscure the values of all the components. You got in touch to confront him (Rightly) but he turned out to be cool and all was well. I was completely taken aback at a gun sitting on your desk as you fixed this amp.
An automatic pistol just sitting there.
Here in the UK we almost never see guns and we never see pistols especially just lying around.
I was waiting on you commenting and explaining why it was there like I had to repair my pistol today and I haven't put it back in my gun safe yet.
You have no idea how jarring that is to someone in the UK.
I love your videos but it just goes to show the difference between the US and the UK.

Love the intro. I'm a big old film buff. Check out the great video, *Legendary Theater Organists* . At the 40 minute mark is a great Paramount short about the "newly introduced" Hammond Tone Wheel organ. They finger crank two different tone wheels to demo the difference between a higher pitched and lower pitched tone wheel. The number of serrations on the edge and speed of wheel determine pitch. More serrations equal higher pitch, also faster is higher pitch. Which for years I didn't know Laurens Hammond geared different axles at different speeds. Of course Laurens invented the synchronous motor for his original business, clocks. The speed of the motor is kept precise from the 60Hz from the electric company.
---A BIT ABOUT LAURENS HAMMOND, DON LESLIE and their contributions to the industry...
Don Leslie of speaker fame and also a great inventor, he actually worked for Laurens Hammond briefly, changing the organ motors in Hammond organs in communities that still were running electric at 50Hz. Iirc Don switched them to 60Hz motors when the territory changed to 60Hz.
Don invented the Leslie rotary speaker in 1941 to imitate theater organ "Tremulant" (Amplitude Modulation + Frequency Modulation which results from oscillating air flow to the organ pipes, AM/FM...Tremolo is AM, Vibrato is FM. Combined is Tremulent. Spinning a directional baffle over a speaker produces Doppler effect (FM), and volume changes (AM) due to the narrow directional moving path with respect to the listener).
Well, Laurens hated the new "Crawford sound" ( as it was coined for the legendary theater organist " Poet of the Organ" Jesse Crawford, a household name in 1941 for his glissando filled ballads. Jesse will grow on you. He singlehandedly invented how to play a theater organ. His glissando resulted from hearing a woman swoon when he played a glissando, so he spent weeks perfecting it. see vid *Eric Lord Playing in the style of Jesse Crawford - TH-cam* ).
Laurens thought the Leslie speaker ruined the sound of the Hammond, which had only recently previous to this had to convince judges it could fool the listeners it was real pipes. So he thought it would cut into his church market and give the Hammond a bad reputation. So for this reason it wasn't until 1968 when Laurens retired that Hammond finally included internal Leslie switching on their organs. This is why there are "half moon" switches mounted to the front of Hammond B3's and other 1935-1975 Hammond tone wheel organs.
Of course the Leslie speaker opened the world to the Hammond/ Leslie sound for theater organ enthusiasts, but mostly the whole _new sound_ that this combination imparted for pop, gospel, and jazz music.
( see images of the first Leslie's, the 30A Leslie, in which the upper horns were fabricated crudely by his wife and sister-in law using a cube block of wood in the center and two paper mache horns. Note, only one horn "speaks", the other is for counter balance.)
Don's very first rotary design used a metal 'vane' rotor. Although not used for Hammond's, Don did employ it on the Vibrato cabinet he designed for Wurlitzer, as the Wurlitzer Model 310 Vibrato Speaker. Wurlitzer was Hammond's first viable competition, beginning in 1946 after the war. Wurlitzer had retooled to make b0mbsfor the war effort, and knowing the theater organ business was put out by sound movies, they settled on an Electrostatic Reed Organ design, and procured the patent for it from The Everette Piano and Organ Company, who preceded Hammond by six years in making an electronic organ. The electrostatic reed works by an active capacitive discharge principle. The best way to learn it is by the excellent animated article the *North Suburban Hammond Organ Society* did not only for the workings of the Hammond B3, the Hammond X66, but also the holy grail of the electrostatic reed organs, the 1953-1963 *Wurlitzer 4600* _Continuous_ Free Reed, Electrostatic Reed Organ ( the 4410 is the spinet version, same guts just less keys and pedals).
The "continuous" free reeds meant that the Wurlitzer electronic organ now had Instant Attack! Just like Hammond. Unfortunately two years later, in 1955 Hammond would redefine organ as we know it, with the introduction of Key Percussion. The B3 was born. Farnsworth Wurlitzer couldn't catch a break! The first Wurlitzer Electronic Theater Organ didn't happen until 1964, with the "straight console" all transistor Wurlitzer 4500 manufactured, not in Tonawanda(Niagara Falls) NY, but in Mississippi. [Morelock's Wurlitzer Parts & Svc is still in business there, as they were former Wurlitzer factory employees who bought out all of the inventory. Great people!]. The 4520 "Horseshoe" theater console came along in 1966. The 4300 is the spinet version of the 4500. IMHO the holy grail of all organs is the 1964-1968 Wurlitzer 4300! Man it will do it all, from biting grit to smokey blues, to sweet hymns, to the pure theater organ it was literally designed from in the lab. ( see pics in the cool brochure in the *Internet Archive WurliTzer Model 4300 Organ Brochure* )
A few things though that the Wurlitzer's '53- '63 Continuous Free Reed Electrostatic Reed models have that Hammond Tone Wheel organs couldn't match are, SUSTAIN ( Wurlitzer invented organ sustain with this very organ model by putting a bleeder network consisting of a capacitor and resistor on each key. This became the industry standard for all DC-Keyed Wurlitzer and practically all other brands except Hammond, hence why no sustain on a Hammond, but every other brand. Actually two capacitor choices gave short and medium length sustain. Long sustain just put the two caps in parallel to add them together.
Also, since the reeds are only used for their harmonics, after the filter circuits, these electrostatic reed organs have breathtaking *Flute, String, and Reed/Horn, and Diapason" tone. Don Leslie also worked on the Continuous Free Reed organ design. Since all of the reeds are vibrating with air at once ( in soundproof enclosures), there is an audible cacophony of sound that shimmered in the background. Don Leslie's genius managed to squelch it into silence using one adjustment screw (located in the center of the thin metal chassis above the cello-board soundproof reed box).
SAVE THE ORGANS GUITAR PLAYERS! They are not wooden parts bins. Models to seek:
    - Hammond Tone Wheel 1935-1975
    - Wurlitzer Electrostatic _Keyed_ Free Reed 1946-1952 (Keyed "air only when key pressed")
    - Wurlitzer Electrostatic _Continuous_ Free Reed 1953-1963 ("Instant Attack" like Hammond)
    - Wurlitzer all-transistor 4XXX series 1964-1974
    - Lowrey DSO/DSO1 Heritage , TBO (transistor version) See *Rory More Lowrey DSO/DSO1*
    - CONN 800-825 Classic, 700-725 Artist, 640-645 Theatre, 550 Theatre, 650, 652(holy grail)
    - Baldwin Orga-sonic Model 54A ( DON"T YOU DARE ROB THAT AMP! This organ is bliss!! )
    - Gulbransen Rialto K ( the Holy Grail of Electronic Theater Organs, this 1961 organ sounds exactly like a real theater organ, and all done with transistors! A key component was once again, Don Leslie! Don designed the ISOMONIC CHANNELLING. Since 4ths and 5ths clash in speakers and amps, Leslie and Peterson surmised that by putting adjacent notes in two separate amps/speakers, then allowing them to mix in the air it wouldn't clash. So by placing 6" x 9" speakers next to each other, where one carries all of the C,D,E,F#,G#,A# notes, and the other C#,D#,F,G,A,B the 4ths and 5ths blend in the air like a real pipe organ, choir, or orchestra. The *1975 and 1978 Gulbransen Rialto II* (designed by CBS, as they bought them too, along with Leslie's company, and Fender of course), it also used the ISOMONIC system, both internally in the Rialto II and in the Leslie 705 cabinet and two stacked 540 "topper" cabs.
    - Thomas, Allen, Yamaha, Kuwai, Kimball, etc.
    - See Jan Giradot Master Organ List PDF
    - Laurens Hammond invented Spring Reverb. See the first, ggl *Ken Griffin Special Effects" . Ken Griffin and Les Paul were great friends and together they innovated many recording methods. Ken played Hammond, but played the Wurlitzer 4600 on the albums Cruising Down The River, 67 Melody Lane, and Anniversary Songs. Ken had a TV show called 67 Melody Lane. Check out the few eps on TH-cam. Including Mr. Rodgers Neighborhood Mailman/ guitarist... *Ken Griffin's 67 Melody Lane - Johnny Costa & Joe Negri - After You've Gone + Little Brown Jug*

Also, there is a product designed for dissolving paint from plastic airplane model kits, it is called "Scalecote II- Wash Away" which may be even better because it is designed to dissolve even oil-based enamel paint while not damaging plastic.

37:08. My closest friends had a very old guitar like that. It was slim but not as slim as that. It was appraised as a Victorian era guitar and sold for a good amount of money. It didn't have strap buttons because it was totally unmolested since new.
I always remember the Mum of the household that played it only ever put Black strings (Black Diamond Strings) on it so to us 10 year olds it always looked like an alien guitar.
I got to play it a few times and it sounded amazing but I was always scared to play it in case I damaged it.
It had a very bright timbre but also had depth in the mid and lower mid range.
Sounded sweet throughout actually and had a very low action and for an ancient guitar that always surprised me.
It looked and felt more like a violin than a guitar.
Not really but you know what I mean. It was a piece of art.
They eventually sold it and went to Corfu on holiday with the money.
Probably kept the balance to fund the sons new house deposits.
    Luv and Peace.

Most are a bit steep, but I see a few reasonable deals hidden in there if you know what you are lookin at.

Yep. And the prices are not firm anywhere in here. They are a starting point for a negotiation.

Very interesting. I can tell you one thing - prices in the US are way higher than in the UK, which is weird 'cos I'd have thought it would be the other way round for most stuff. Looking forward to part 2 :)

Lmao at 17:00-18:15 I seen my favorite back alley guitar dealer!! I’ve bought a ton of gear from that guy at his old shop in mesquite,Texas and I have no idea what his name is. Then he’s in 20:00!!!! Bruce Lee!!!

I see the prices of most of my gear has either gone up or it was just listed really high at this show.
If people are just walking by it's listed too high. If they buy everything you got the first day it was listed too low.

$1200 for a silverface Bassman head🙄. I remember back in the 80s to early-mid 90s where silverface everything was available in every used shop from $125-350.

48:10 If I was rich, that would be so kick ass.... Go stay at a outdoors type place that sells high end guitar gear where you can stay for a week and enjoy the outdoors, while testing out vintage gear to make a proper decision.....THe dude is is on to something

As you said, there are only so many shapes one can come up with for a guitar with out copying or close to copying another's patent. I think that's why a lot of these copy suits don't get to far. I'm sure others think the same way.

This store is most interesting, but your camera man needs some basic knowledge on how to handle the camera. I could not read fast enough on the labels, worst of all the camera pans so fast, that makes my eyes hard to follow. I could not finish the whole video, very tiring for the eyes.
