Pollinating The Sausage Tree

  • I got a really amazing opportunity while volunteering at my local conservatory (Mitchell Park Domes) where I was able to help in the process they do every year to pollinate the sausage tree! This is a multi conservatory effort where we need to trade viable flowers with pollen with another conservatory in order to cross pollinate the tree! I made a small documentary about the process and what's all involved. I hope you like it!
This video was possible because of the Friends Of The Domes organization that organizes volunteering opportunities and support for the milwaukee domes!

Surprised to learn that the stigma remains receptive to pollen after the flower sheds its corolla and stamens. Was also surprised to learn that the pollen in the anthers was viable after the corolla fell to the ground. If this is the case, why not simply pack anthers or pollen into small plastic vials and ship them overnight? I suspect the road trip is too enjoyable.

Please explain this one, because I have done it several times with no issues. There comes a point where the flowers are in full beautiful bloom, and curve upright almost like a cup. If one were to turn the cup, and good amount (almost like water) of nectar flows out of the "cup". The aroma is sweet, and the taste is delicious, like a unique sugar water. (It was not rain water). I have done this several times, as the tree, the height of a 3 story building does this on rare occasions. I cannot remember the month, but the window is but about 3 days. I understand the fruit itself is poisonous, but the liquid nectar that sits floating in the floral cup is entirely different.
