  • I run some games on my new laptop. It's super effective.
    The writeup on how I made this is here: cowlark.com/201...
    Paku Paku is available here: www.deathshadow...
    Everything you ever wanted to know about colour composite artifacting: int10h.org/blo...
    The music all comes from Internet Archive's collection of digitised 78s. archive.org/de... archive.org/de... archive.org/de... archive.org/de...
    Yes, this machine really was made in 1986. It's one of the first true laptops ever made.
    No, you wouldn't want it on your lap --- fully loaded it's 13kg.
    Yes, this video has been brutally edited to remove slow load times, delays, and stitch together footage.
    No, my dining room isn't really yellow. I had to tweak the colour balance to make the colours on the LCD come out right.
    Yes, the keyboard REALLY IS THAT LOUD.
    No, the machine doesn't have any kind of audio out, so I had to capture it with my new Vxmba microphone, so it's pretty tinny. Of course, it's pretty tinny in real life too.
    And yes, Johann Strauss is a goddamned genius.

    I used to have one myself. My friend gave me one as a gag gift in the 1990s. They didn't know I'd fall in love with it. So, long stories short, it was full of suprises.

    The sound of the keyboard though so amazing, i can just imagine how it will feel.

      That’s an SKCM Brown Alps keyboard, one of the best touches ever. Not used on a whole lot-the Magnavox Videowriter is the only other thing that comes to mind

    The high pitched sound from overkill drove my dog nuts.

    This absolutely amazing. I just picked one of these up i'm curious do you have to run the DOS 3.20 diskette in drive A then load the program from a diskette in drive B? I'd love to do this on my machine

    • @hjalfi
      @hjalfi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Either way works --- one common setup was to have DOS and the program (e.g. WordPerfect) on drive A and drive B was used for documents only. That made it easy to swap drive B while things were running.

      @@hjalfi thanks! i'll give this a shot. I'd love to get Overkill working on it, one of my childhood favorites. I do have the CRT adapter attachment, but no monitor that i can attach it just yet.

      I wouldn't call Overkill playable --- I wasn't kidding about the load times, and it's _very_ sluggish. Good luck, though.

      @@hjalfi that makes sense. i wanted to take the convertible to a local retro computing meetup here and show off its capabilities. maybe i should stick with some earlier games. again, i appreciate the input :)

      i ended up playing it safe and just running some battle chess. Still sluggish but definitely playable. Also I was lucky enough to pick up the color CRT that goes with the machine so it looked extra good

    Nicely done :) What monitor is this?

    • @hjalfi
      @hjalfi  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      x86VileR It's a generic cheap 1440x900 monitor I had on a shelf, connected via a composite-to-HDMI format converter which I found in a junk shop. Sadly I don't have a real composite CRT.

    • @x86VileR

      It's interesting that this adapter appears to have a comb filter -- my HDTV also has one, but not my '99 CRT TV. You can see this by how 'checkerboard dither' patterns (as in the Elite HUD) appear intact over composite, instead of smearing into lines of alternating colors. If this was a standard feature of composite displays it could've been exploited for even more color/resolution tricks.

      The converter is an Atlona AT-LINE-PRO2, now very very discontinued. I did notice some kind of temporal filtering, where text appearing on the screen would change slightly a frame or so later, but was unable to figure out how to turn it off (the manual's available but largely unhelpful).

    no wordperfect and printer demo? for shame ;)

    • @hjalfi
      @hjalfi  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly, the printer is borked (makes a great monitor stand though). And WordPerfect isn't a game. It's a way of life.
