There's people successful on the hunt with a Verdict, what warrants a hunting bow?
My actual bowhunting setup wouldn't qualify for this bowhunter division...how much stricter would you set the rules?

Glad this is up. Enjoy this class a lot.. I hear you guys on the equipment side of things but for the most part, only the fat arrows could be questioned as really noone hunts with a "25"-"27" series arrow. In addition a target bow is really nothing more than a shinny hunting bow as you can most of the time get a hunting bow with the same axle to axle brace height and cam configuration, but I understand the comments. Ths class is limited to 12" stabilizers and fixed pin, no magnification in the sight or scope, whereas you can as a bowhunter hunt with magnification if you choose.
Just so folks are aware.....I'm not sure what changes people would like to see, but what we allow in "Bowhunter" essentially is what every national, competitive archery organization allows... ASA, IBO, NFAA and USA Archery. In the competition world, this is Bowhunter. (IBO Bowhunter Release division allows any length stabilizers and magnification in the scope lens)
@@pjreilly3997 I’m not throwing all my shade at Lancaster Archery. It’s at the entire Bowhunter Class across the board. Long axel to axel target bows, and 27 series arrows are not the “norm” for hunting by a long shot whether you’d admit it publicly or not.
@@jeffcopenhaver2217 I just went to the basement and measured my Browning Ballistic Mirage from the mid 90s….one of the best hunting bows of its day. 42 inches axle to axle… 😆😆
@@pjreilly3997 And the majority of us were just discovering the advantages of carbon arrows back then too. I still have a Bear Whitetail ll hanging in my garage with a Kwikee full of Easton Game Getters. Times change. There’s a reason bow manufacturers make a distinction between hunting and target bows in their marketing. Be realistic, the percentage of bows being used in woods are 35”ata and under. The rigs that rule the Bowhunter Class nowadays are not geared towards hunting. They’re dumbed down target rigs with 23-27 series arrows. We can agree to disagree till the cows come home, but as you can see in the rest of the comment I’m not alone in my beliefs.

Limit the ATA to 34-35 and arrow size to 5-6mm. Not all but for hunting lower then 35 ATA covers 90% of hunters.
6.5 is considered a standard carbon size though..

I once shot IBO Worlds in Senior Hunter against the winner who had his quiver on, to keep his bow balanced the same all year. That was impressive.
Okay I’m new to bows, just bought my first last week and am only shooting it with the stabilizer it came with right now. Do they actually make that much of a difference? I don’t understand how a 9 inch is “better” than a 12 and 18 better than all that. I understand the rear stabilizer would help, but the Olympic Recurves look ridiculous and I have to wonder if they actually make a difference or if they’re just a mental thing.
The comments on this page are identical to last year’s comments. I agree that these are not hunting bows. I shoot local matches with my hunting bow and also shoot open C occasionally. And when I mean hunting bow, I shoot with my quiver on and have even made the mistake of knocking an arrow with a broadhead on it. However, my bow would not qualify for this division. I shoot a 12" front stab with a QD, which makes it longer than 12". For me, this stops becoming a bowhunter class when you have guys coming out in shooter jerseys. At the heart of it, I feel that a lot of the gripe comes from the fact that hunters want to compete against hunters. Not someone who is staying out of the open class because they know they are not as competitive there. These are some of the changes I would make if anyone cares.
1. The bow must be marketed by the manufacturer as a hunting bow.
2. No magnification in the front sight and the aiming device must be a fiber of some sort. No glass lens with a dot.
3. No arrows larger than a 22 series. Think of all the guys hunting with GT XT hunters.
4. The arrows must have screw in points.
5. The string must have some form of silencers on it.
6. No sponsors for this division.
7. No shooter jerseys. Heck, it is called bow hunter, perhaps you have to shoot in solid colors, cammo, or flannel.
8. You have to have a quiver on your bow at the start. You don’t have to shoot with it on, but the arrows must be secured in a mechanical type quiver. Arrows are retrieved from that quiver. I don’t know anyone who hunts with a hip quiver still.
9. You can move your sights after a shot. I know that if I miss a deer and I am lucky enough to get another shot, I will make an adjustment.
10. Minimum draw weight of 55 lbs.
11. In addition to the entry fee, competitors in this division must posses a hunting license from the current or previous year.
12. At some point in the match, one of your arrows has to be shot with a broadhead on it and that arrow must score at least a 9 to show that the bow has been tuned for broadheads. I know, crazy but think about it.
I have no dog in the fight because I shoot/ hunt with a recurve/ long bow but.... I think the essence of the Bowhunting class is to use limited equipment and the idea is that its a stripped down bow to make it more difficult and that is where I think the class should get specific in regulation.

6. If you eliminate sponsors you eliminate the division. You will have less entrance fees and smaller pools and the division dies.

8. Eh, I dont know about this one. My buddy uses a hip quiver when he is hunting from a blind or stand but he has an attachable quiver spot and stalk. I disagree.
9 . I dont think adjustable sights should be allowed. As a hunter you should know how to gap your sight pin.

11. No, this eliminates foreign competitors. You need everyone you can get to increase the entrance pots.
12. No, as a hunter you practice with both your field points and your broadheads. I think this may work in a 3d competition style setting but not for indoor classes. Its generally not a good idea to have broadheads indoors at competition. Yeah field points are pointy but the first judge that slices their hand open on an arrow that would be over real quick.
To every one who dose not think this is true bow hunter class can we agree on these rules: first off the arrows width should be around 5 mill, no single pin sights must have three or more, axle to axle must be under 32, and must be shot with some kind of button

This division is a joke. It’s basically grab your target bow and arrows, put a small front Stabalizer on and take off your magnifier on your scope and you have the bow hunter class.
It’s stupid, should be no target bows, and no target arrows. Only arrows that u would actually use for hunting

You just described a hunting bow. Arrow size limits wouldn't change anything. The same people would win.

@@jeffreyknox3676 I've also been in archery for 20 years. Multiple people hunted with the hoyt Altus. Including Jesse Broadwater. People also hunt with the trx 36 and 34
