great video. I cam across an article that stated that what we think and what most people teach of what attack and release times do was infact not quite correct though is close. from what i remember the article stated that the attack time is how long it takes the compressor to apply 2/3rds of the compression ratio set, with the release its the opposite of the attack. When a compressor is over the threshold its always attacking and releasing.
Nice job this is great for beginners I wish I saw this when I first started. I love the fact that you used Waves plugins those are my go to for mixing and mastering!
Stop whining about the vocalist. This is what producing skill is about: making the best of what you have to work with and Darren demonstrates this perfectly. Look how many of you producers will wait around for your perfect vocalist that will actually want to work for you. SMH!
There is no definitive answer to that question. There is no right or wrong in the order. For example, do you want the delay signal to have reverb or do you want the reverb signal to be delayed. With Time Based Effects you need to experiment. Dynamic processing depends on if you are trying to fix something of create a sound. Hope this helps!
Very useful. Thanx for sharing.....But, I have one question. In which order do you chain these effect/tools? Would it be 1, de-esser 2. compressor 3. EQ and 4. reverb?
No problem. Another chain people often do is 3 (reductive - i.e. taking out unpleasant tones), 2, 1, 3 (additive - typically adding some high end or warmth), 4. I've also seen 3-, 2, 3+, 1, 4; and, 2,3,1,4. Reverb will almost always be last. A popular technique I've observed for reverb and delay is to create a seperate send track so it's not interfering with the original chain. There's much more control over the mix and stereo imaging that way.
Whatever the case, I think the best method is to definitely clean up the signal with EQ *before* compressing it. If you compressed first, you would be boosting all of the frequencies, and it would be harder to remove the unpleasant ones after the fact; you would need more extreme EQ to do so and run the risk of making it sound unnatural. My rule of thumb is to create a pleasant signal I like without compression, then use compression merely to create some volume consistency.
Will I learn any of this in a class as a Music Production major at Full Sail? I'm currently attending college in Arizona but have solid plans to attend Full Sail in 2020.
Well, this is all about how to try to be a punk song should sound like. Everybody is complaining about the singer but I actually start to like it... I wish I could be in that studio to show you how to hahaha
The musicians I have been working with have wanted very little effects on their voice. They're trying to get a take that is identical to if they played a set in the same room as you. Are there any good methods for this?
Spitfish vst is best to get rid of S'ssssss in my opinion, compression is a must to sound pro and reverb is optional depending on the style once again in my opinion, pity you didn't cover mid sweep to find annoying frequencies which is a very useful thing to know, thanks

What VU level do you keep for presentation recording? I mean it looks very easy to create this sound, but in reality it is a bit harder to do. Mostly people get a poor signal from the microphone and start to amplify it with a high noise ratio as result. What i seen is that this is the biggest frustration from many starting audio and/or video recorders. I think that it is elementary to make the basic of the recording right, the other effects are more easely to understand in the post production. Without a good basic recording you have simply 10 steps back or even have a screwd up recording.
VU Meters can be calibrated to whatever you want them to be at. If you are using a DAW to record however, you should make sure that you are in pre fader metering first of all and then once you are getting signal you want to peak somewhere between -10 and -6. Getting a good clean signal is the key to making sure that your vocal is easy to work with. Hope this helps!! :-)
Benjamin Porter Yes, that helps people indeed. Thank you for this explenation. It is indeed a art to get a good clean signal, but in many educational video's that is not completly explained.
TBH there are alot of singing styles out there. Some many not appeal because they are not necessarily main stream and the ones your used to hearing. But thats the beauty, some many weird and unique style are out there that can really complement a song if done in the right context.
sir i bought mxl 770 and scarlett solo recently and i am using adobe audition but iam not getting studio quality in output is really low and after mixing it sound very slow in headphones and distorted in speakers please tell me how should i mix?
Yes, you can figure out the 1/4 note delay time of the song that you are working on and start to 1/2 that a few times to get it into a reasonable pre delay time for pre delay. This is subjective and song dependent on how long you should go. For example if the song was 120BPM 60,000/120BPM= 500ms that is the 1/4 not delay time for a song done at 120 beats per minute. 500/2=250 250/2=125 Third option 125/2=62.5 Second option 63.5/2=31.25 This would be the start for pre delay
I'm DYING to know how James Blake mixes his vocals. They are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Dynamics almost as if there's fuck all compresion! But there IS something going on! But I don't know what.
hobbitkiller45 what im using now is a sound recorder from my phone and what he said too, just saying.......btw ***** , we have a defferent currency so $100 is quite expensive here....
It's a concept that you set your reverb decay time to be an interval of your tempo. This should make the reverb less noticeable and blend easily into your track. It gives the impression of there being space without an obvious reverb sound. www.thewhippinpost.co.uk/tools/delay-time-calculator.htm check the link for a calculator you can use.
+Faisal Akhtar It depends completely on your needs. If you're good with a computer, you can do a lot with just an interface and a DAW (like the $100 AudioBox USB which comes with Studio One). You'll probably need a mic, too, which should be at least another 100. Everything after that is completely dependent on your end goal.
I've found one more point … when you record at home.. maybe it is only my mic's problem: Find the appropriate distance bettween your lips and you mic. You get closer: more deeps in you recording. You get somewhat far: more boxy sound. I use my fingers to measure the distance, and make some tries.
Thanks matthew mcconaughey !! Didn't know you were into recording
hahahah you fucker
I needed this video for the longest!! Best one so far

This video is gold......
the video is clearly about how to mix vocals, not about how good or bad the vocalist is...
Georgios Karaspyros is it helpful for mixing? should i watch it
Very professional, enjoyed it!
I Mix Pretty Good With Compression, And I'm Learning And Getting Better With It Everyday.
That's the spirit! How has your producing career been going since it has been 4 years since you left the comment?
Very informative and to the point. Thanks!
Great video, well presented and easy to understand, thanks.

wow this was a great tutorial man good job
Thank you for the tutorial! I'm a new musician, and it's great to know the basics of mixing vocals. :)
Her voice might sound weird with no music but I checked out the band and it totally fits the style of the songs. They have great songs!

I was laughing the entire video bc of that vocal riff but great tips xD
nice piece thank you...
she has an amazing voice and that song is awesome. I don't know why everyone feels the need to be so negative...
The song is definitely awesome. Lyrics are a bit funny at parts tbh
Amazing!

Thanks, appreciated. Would you generally use those effects in the order in which they appear in the video ?

If u descover the secret in this tutorial
The singer was fine. It was just the repetitiveness of that certain part of the song that made it annoying.
The song is actually pretty good

Good video. I know if I went to Full Sail I would fully sail.
Can this method be used for the same way to record vocals for voice-acting for animation?
of course mate, these steps are as worthy for music as for postproduction
i actually like the song, nice writing.
how do u sinch pre delay and delay with the tempo of your song?

These comments were very helpful.
Is there a way to figure out the predelay and reverb time so you can sync with bpm?
We will reach out to Recording Course Director Darren Schneider to find out.
Yes, you can figure out the 1/4 note delay time of the song that you are working on and start to 1/2 that a few times to get it into a reasonable pre delay time for pre delay.
This is subjective and song dependent on how long you should go.
For example if the song was 120BPM
60,000/120BPM= 500ms that is the 1/4 not delay time for a song done at 120 beats per minute.
500/2=250
250/2=125 Third option
125/2=62.5 Second option
63.5/2=31.25 This would be the start for pre delay
Shouldn’t you use the reverb on a send channel?
Hahahaha CLASSIC video intro!
I'm DYING to know how James Blake mixes his vocals. They are SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Dynamics almost as if there's fuck all compresion! But there IS something going on! But I don't know what.
Is it necessary to use a microphone? Just asking
What else are you going to use to record a vocal? or anything for that matter? Sorry, I just don't understand your question
hobbitkiller45 what im using now is a sound recorder from my phone and what he said too, just saying.......btw ***** , we have a defferent currency so $100 is quite expensive here....
yeah there is...but i think i'll save first....a microphone is far from a students budget hehehhe I'll take your advice...
Thanks for the advice *****
Akane Sakuya Just scream into your Computer. He will automatically make you a fresh mixtape with that you can show out.
4:45 "It's important that the pre-delay and reverb times are synced with the tempo of your song"

Besides the song being negative in nature, good video. Let's tune A back to 432hz and flip the world around. 🎉❤😅
Darren, there are lots of BS comments here so I'll just say "Thank you for the post".
gud video thx

hi there,
i want to get my song mixed from you.

I'll have a listen..Send the tracks over
I've found one more point … when you record at home.. maybe it is only my mic's problem:

I have never even started using the garget for recording n I want to learn all
What delay is that
Is it me or did the vocals not already compressed before he started processing?
