Good one David! Loved the upward compression technique. Never heard anyone else make mention of it although I've heard it on countless records. Sounds great. I'll give it a try on my next track. Thank you!
Great video as usual. I use the compressor trick a lot on vocal delays so that the delay is only heard after the last word of a phrase and is silent during singing. Much easier than automating the send level.
So glad I found your channel! I've got the fundamentals down and have a good ear so your videos are exactly the refining touches I need to get that pro sound. Many thanks for sharing!
Thanks for sharing this trick. I tried the expander trick and it worked like a charm. I love the expander idea so much because without the tail of the reverb, you can get your reverb to blend in so well with the sound that one wouldn't even know it's there initially unless you have your reverb volume up quite a bit. In which case, I'd probably need to back that off a bit lol
That is one of my tricks to get "reverb"without actually using reverb. :) I find it thickens up the vocals. I plan on using a little delay and a little of your reverb tip. Once again, thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge with all of us. Much appreciated!
Nuances, details ... accumulate many of them and suddenly you'll have a high quality production. Man , you are crazy...like genius crazy I mean :) Bravo !
Damn...!!! I used to do this SC Technique for Ducking Vocal Delays.. Never Tried it on Reverb... SOUNDS SOO DAMN "PRO" !!! :-D Thanks a Million... !!! :-D
Very helpful reverb tips, Thanks! Would be great to see a video where you start with a DRY MIX and then add the "space" (verbs/delays) to ALL instruments. This would show how they all work 'together'.
This and Pensado's Place are my two favorite youtube channels for mixing tips and tricks. Love the upwards compression trick on reverb man! Will definitely try this out. Would be cool to try using one verb with good early reflections with the gate trick and use the sidechain compression with a verb with a nice tail to get the best of two worlds if you ever found yourself in a situation where it could work/was needed. Or use it as a way of having dynamic effect change whenever the vocalist sings, like a chorus and a long delay or something.
Thanks David,am sure today is just, third or fourth may be fifth times, again am learning this demonstration,it's fun,it's enjoyable,it's intuitive if you put just work to it.your the best engineer in the world, your voice implies how much your enjoying what your doing what you love to do,impressive,I give you credits.thanks.love from East Africa Tanzania🇹🇿
I've used this technique, though not with the same plugins, on piano and it sounds great, it helps you keep the clarity of the dry instrument and at the same time, have a sensation of space (if used judiciously). Thank you for yet another informative and entertaining video!!
I love this trick. I use it all the time. Also side-chain gated verbs and delays do a similar thing to the upward compressor trick--it can let you have a wet vocal in a busy mix.
Hey man, I just recently discovered your channel. I must say that it is by far one of the best pro audio channels I have come across. Really well thought out content. Your experience speaks for itself. Could I ask that the demo meterials could be a bit louder in your videos though please. I find that to really hear the detail of the demos I have to turn up a bit and then the vocal is quite loud. Other than that please keep the great content coming💪🏼
The SC compression is a great tip for clearing a path for the vocal while retaining the tail. The expander I don't really get, I just shorten the tail in the verb if I want it to cut quickly when the vocals break.
its a great technique and i thank you for showing this, however i believe you mixed up 'upward compression' (when you boost quieter parts when signal drops below the threshold) with 'upward expansion' (when you boost louder parts when signal exceeds the threshold). pro-g is a gate/expander and not a compressor and so it does 'upward expansion' when set to 'upward' mode by this logic. somebody please correct me if im wrong, i see a lot of confusion about these terms online and i would like to have a clear understanding. anyways, this is a great video and perhaps one of the best channels on youtube on all things mixing :)
What a Great Technique. I'm delighted I found this particular tutorial. For the longest time I've been using combinations of delay "tucked" inside slight reverb for the purpose of adding a bit of "snap" to vocals when the vocals stop...without sounding artificial or engineered. This is great as I want my vocals to be out front and clear from the backgrund music without having to do a lot of additional processing and doubling of tracks for separation of effects. Question: Wouldn't this also serve to reduce CPU usage as well? Or am I misunderstanding something? It seems like this serves to kill two birds with one stone as it would be less processing of additional effects through an entire mix without losing dynamics. Thanks again...I will be burning the midnight oil again playing with this. Cheers! Marty
@@tecnogadget2 i know this was 3 years ago but any reason you singled out the Samson C1? Are they that bad? Or that good in your opinion? I ask cos I have one that use every now and then and find fairly good :)
Really great video, so thank u 4 your time. I think the second trick (upward reverb) its the same thing if u simply automate the appropriate ammount of a send reverb to vox when it sing and then drastically draw to zero when the vocals stops.
That was awesome. I was leaning so close to the monitor and volume high because I was so engaged with this lesson. Not just the topic but the passion of the teacher (David) made this lesson interesting.
Very interesting video. I prefer the expander on the vocal verb (though I'd personally like some tail on some mixes, which could be added in). I could see the compression working well to duck delays on a mail vocal. Subscribed, thanks!
Both techniques just blew my mind. Question: in your opinion, which technique would you choose for this mix? Both sound interesting, but... which fits the vibe better, in your opinion?
Hey David. This is a big question but as a mixer how do you know when to use downward, upward, or parallel compression? Do you know right away what to reach for or do you try all methods to see what fits best for the mix?
Another trick that i find also works pretty well (at least with "percussive" signals like vocals, drums,...) is to insert a sidechain gate on the reverb track, triggered by the vocals, drums,... P.S. By the way, what's the name of this track? :)
I wish you would use the Bypass during playing a phrase of the song. We could much better hear the difference than when you start the song over again with a gap in-between.
I seriously just tried to grab your screens scroll bar to move up to check out the top of those vocal transients lol.. oh well it's still early.. but great video! I had tried this on a general reverb aux before and really liked it's effect, but thought I was crazy for doing it.. I didn't know if I was adding problems with intelligibility or dynamics, but to my intuition it just sounded more 'alive'... so probably good advice more like you said on a song "with a lot of space", and to use the side chain dry trigger.. you can really hear it sounds like a 'total washout' without the Ex-S.C. Comp!
Another amazing tutorial, below you just advised that sidechain is one of the most powerfull tool in mixing. Please advise some more super tools for mixing
that vocal is on point, really like this reverb technique too, but that vocal ought to be on some r&b/electronic track, good luck! btw, how many compressors and EQ's, etc. do u have? and which ones do u use the most?
i LOVE your reverd-delay sound in your master song. can you tell me something about your snare sound? i dont like it that much, i just think everything is perfect but that sound. maybe you wanted it like that. i love your videos and i learn a lot. thank you from spain man. sorry mi inglesh.
Great video, thanks! I am wondering though, couldn't you get the same effect if you automate the mix level of the reverb plugin to be more dry during the vocals and more wet during the spaces in between?

@@mixbustv Haha. You do rule actually. Have a good day!
anyone notice how emotional he got when talking bout the compressor lmaoo

He loves compression bro, like really loves it lol
😂😂😂😂😂
sonnox oxford compressor still doing its thing all these years later

Yeah, I love that one tooo... but it never occurred to me to do it with reverb for some reason.
even already knowing this I really enjoyed the clarity of your communication. Really the Boss of mix engineering on the tube :)
This guy always give unique tips. He don't copy others videos. Very well for that. Thanks!
I love your reverb videos man. Very informative and applicable 🔥
that upward compression on the vocal reverb sounds awesome on that vocal
It's these little things that make the final result much more polished. I should really make a list because it's easy to forget.
That upward compression trick is EXACTLY what I needed thank you for making this, and thanks TH-cam for recommending me this 3 year old video

Holy cow that's like the old echo units that only give echo tails when you stop singing. How did I never think of this???
Genius! Subscribed!?,
Awesome! Thanx for sharing this knowledge!
This is amazing. Smooths out the Vocals sooo nicely!
exactly what I was looking for. Heard a popular cover singer have this effect in his mix and had to figure out how it was done. Thanks!
Thanks for this tip! Great advice I cant wait to try out.
Nice tune too!
I totally forgot about this trick, so thanks for the very cool reminder tutorial! Dope trick.
Took me awhile to wrap my head around this, but wow! Nice trick. Never woulda thought about that.
Thanks for the help!! Great channel!
So cool!!! that way the voice keeps in the mid and its strength! thanks David! I´ll apply it to my mixes! :D
Thank you for the tip. Tracking vocals right now, but the singer hates reverb on his voice. I think this will work for him.

I do this with delays, pretty rad
Good techniques to control reverb in either direction... what a contrast between the two processed versions.

Nice tricks! I've used compression on reverb but only for control, keep up the great job, thank you for sharing!
Thanks for the tip and examples! It's cool to get creative with the reverb return. I agree with your notes at 8:30.
Great ideas, thanks for the tips and for explaining it thoroughly 👍

I was thinking, man that vocal sounds amazing. Then I saw the chain U47 into 1073. No wonder it sounds so good

Oh man, how people love to praise the gear, but the real reason is that singer has nice voice himself. Believe me)
infosmartsound no argument there. A great singer will work on any mic.

I use this compressor for some years now. Can't wait for your video on this (:
Excellent vid!!! I know this one's a little older, but it's still a classic! David, still loving the Oxford Dynamics?
I do, It's a great compressor with a lot of features
Thank you Mixbus!! Great technique!!

Also You can gate reverb to cut the tail, so the level in singing part is not jumping so much, but the tail still decays faster
