      Knowing that Matt & Johnny ask people to call in. It flies in the face of all their charter's requirements for having a 501(C). They're supposed to be education everyone, but Dillahunty has no advanced degrees, not in anything, and should at least have one in *Divinity* when it's the subject here. "Call in and be made fun of." "One more word out of you and I'm hanging up on you." Why ask people to call in at all? It's so Matt can try and make fun of them and then the cretins in the comment section jumping on Dillahunty's uneducated bandwagon.

    • @danielcox6143
      @danielcox6143 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Dark Angel Your idea that education doesn't matter doesn't stand on its own merit, it can't.
      *Expert Witness*
      a person who is permitted to testify at a trial because of special knowledge or proficiency in a particular field that is relevant to the case.
      If there is no criteria for who gets to teach then you'd be right, it only matter the worthiness of the statements, but that idea itself is a self referential paradox in a dispute where no arbiter or Judge is present.
      Of course Matt Dillahunty without any education whatsoever is going to say, "My ideas about religion are just as good as yours." But I'm an expert, I have the most sacred Holy Cross in human history which rests atop Mt. Rubidoux. I've been through my own covenant (Jesus Christ's covenant) *four hundred times* with an open mind.
      Matt can't be right ever because 1. he has a religious axe to grind and that's seen 2. "I'm a *positive* atheist," and 3. "I'm an anti-theist."
      That's a hater.

    • @jcnot9712
      @jcnot9712 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There was an inkling of a point there that he was not articulate enough to develop. In theory the general citizenry of any country (even a capitalist one) has as a primary goal to get resources in order to survive, then keeping up becomes a secondary objective. However, in practice that is not how it works in the US. Like Matt said, even relatively poor people go out and get the new iPhone, fresh haircuts and expensive clothing because our economy is built to benefit those who do those things and it is one of the primary ways in which we compete (along with practical and social skills). Something along those lines would’ve been a much more interesting conversation, but as per usual Matt just endlessly berated him and titrated the conversation.

Matt started off reasonable, but that guy didn't want to budge and he couldn't defend shit without being disingenuous, what's the point in keeping it civil. If the premise is Christianity is the reason the US is prosperous, when so many third world countries are Christian based, you're dead in the water from the get go.

    • @lancebloke
      @lancebloke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jcnot9712 I agree with this comment. The caller is not going to change their position because they didn't really get much of a chance to articulate their point to then be struck down. I think Matt and Johnny are both right, but just shouting over someone ever time they get 3 seconds in to a sentence is not going to help.
      Also, don't get me wrong, there are people who just have an inability to see past their own noses but they never will if you only ever let them get 1/3 of the way down it.

      @@dustigenes I’ve watched a lot of these streams and I simply do not see the desperation to shut them down. Anyone who’s interested enough in atheism to listen to his isn’t being convinced that easily so Matt’s vitriol adds very little and just seems to be a cathartic thing for him and the listeners rather than a deliberate attempt at a productive conversation.
      I can’t help but feel there’s wasted potential, since I’ve seen debates like the one Matt had with Jordan Peterson where Matt effortlessly kicked Peterson’s ass without resorting to these tactics.

    Alexander Hamilton from the treaty of Tripoli. ""As the Government of the United States... is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion -- as it has in itself no character of enmity against the laws, religion, or tranquillity of Musselmen -- and as the said States never have entered into any war or act of hostility against any Mehomitan nation, it is declared by the parties that no pretext arising from religious opinions shall ever produce an interruption of the harmony existing between the two countries."
    This document was endorsed by Secretary of State Timothy Pickering and President John Adams. It was then sent to the Senate for ratification; the vote was unanimous. It is worth pointing out that although this was the 339th time a recorded vote had been required by the Senate, it was only the third unanimous vote in the Senate's history. There is no record of debate or dissent. The text of the treaty was printed in full in the Philadelphia Gazette and in two New York papers, but there were no screams of outrage, as one might expect today."

    Always slays me when people call this a Christian nation, are shown the secular fundamentals of not just the laws of the land but the Constitution itself, and then go on to interpret the amendments using personal projection without a shred of historical context. It's (sadly) these people that underline the founding fathers' built in elitism, their lack of faith in the greater public to rule themselves, instead relying on representation. These people would never govern in good faith for the greater community. They'd persecute and call it their holy mandate to do so. Man are the next two decades fraught with uncertainty.

    Dont disagree with matt on most of this. Except the male to female ratio in this country is almost 1:1. The OVERWHELMING majority is Christian. Not really the same thing. You cant say the religion it completely disconnected with day to day life here. Granted separation of church and state. Though you cant say religion is completely separate from politics (Abortion?). Politicians who are pro life may not quote the bible directly but you cant say the influence isnt there. Life used to be VERY hard for people. We cant even imagine how hard. Average life span 30 years? Death of infants common place. Rampant disease, poverty, hunger, etc. How much of Religion got people through? Even Matt cant answer that. Would an Athiest nation be better? Dont know. It may not be. It may be far worse than people think. Well people are rational right? No no they arent. It's easy to be moral in safety and security with a full stomach and no ailments or pain that you have to live with.

I know he's only human, and definitely deals with this stuff a lot more than your average person... so I'm trying not to be too hard here... but i just wonder if it would've gone better had he was able to refrain from blowing up at the guy. idk
    this also is something i think about myself, too. I've had instances of getting angry when people are dishonest with me like that and act like they're interested in having an open, and honest discussion about something, but aren't... and I'd get angry and sometimes raise my voice, and curse... and i at least almost always regret it once i calm down, if not always...
    I guess my questioning how Matt handled it is also questioning myself.
