I love first Aunt Viv. I also hate how the internet reduced Daphne Reid to a meme. She does SO MUCH good work for black people, especially black students at HBCUs, along with her husband Tim Reid the Legend.
My thing is it’s not her fault, you have to blame the writers for watering down the character. During the first Aunt Viv era they actually focused on developing the character, but after she left they stopped developing her character. I hate the whole vs thing because Mrs. Reid could only do what she’s given.
@@suntansuperman26 Daphne Reid had no charisma, she never came across as a "put your foot down" type like Janet Hubert did, Reid was just your typical tv mom
He's not allowed to speak on it. He said it's about will as it's based on benny's medina's actual life. Janet like esther rolle with Jimmy walker she didnt like will smith joking and playing around all the time and the show was benny's will was chosen and janet was let go.
Yes, we can all agree that Janet was the best Aunt Viv. I believe that's the consensus on almost every video dealing with the show. But, Janet fucked herself over. Will, Karyn, and Tatyana doesn't acknowledge nor entertain any questions dealing with what happened. Alphonso called her a crazy bitch during a stand-up routine about 10 years ago. Joseph is the only one that answered the question in depth from his perspective. That was Will's show, and for some reason Janet couldn't handle it. She had a chance to remain on the show but she wouldn't take the deal, changed her mind but missed the deadline. I believe Joseph's word over anyone in that cast.
I believe joseph too. And he's been quiet all this time. Edit: but I also do remember Janet saying that will and Alphonso also made a lot of offcolour jokes about dark women and moms. So I'm sure she had good reason to be offended.
Jay Paladin - have smarts will listen Alphonso has issues with black women? What other black women has he trashed. I didn’t see him go in on Tatiana Ali (Ashley). Maybe Janet really was horrible to work with. There’s a reason the show was considering firing her. It sounds like Janet felt less experienced actors (regardless of their position) were beneath her. Alphonso may have had reason to say what he said, even if using that word is unacceptable.
Facts! I really liked her but I can see her pride in her ranting videos. Pride is an evil spirit. I had to learn and humble myself. Just because one is older, more experienced, cultivated, educated etc does not mean the world or people owe us something. This are all manmade limiting concepts. The universe will choose and decide. You need to count your blessings and keep on growing. I had to learn the hard way and try to check myself.
😂😂😂 He didn't start stuttering until he was asked about Janet. Up-until that question, he was fine. **Side note: Jada and Will need to sit down, at that Red Table, and TALK to Janet Hubert!**
No Red Table talk. Will Smith don't owe Janet Hubert shit. The show was called "FRESH PRINCE OF BEL-AIR". She fucked up a once in a life time situation. If anything, she needs to stop making internet videos, acknowledge she fucked up, & apologize to Will.
I’m good now that I’ve viewed this and was on the $$$$ with what happened BIG WILL Went straight to his HEAD! Because you had something that worked! She was an adult with talents & skill! He was young & made a lot of errors in judgment! With I’m sure folks with a key===$$$$ in his back! For 1 her MELANIN in her SKIN!!!!!!!! Let’s get straight to it! & She stood up for herself!
That used to be me but you sometimes just have to say what’s really going on with no tip toeing. He’s a nice man so I can understand though, SN: Alfonso was the total opposite 😂😂😂
I dont like the fact that they replaced Janet with a light skinned woman... i almost feel that was the plan all along. I loved Janet, she fit that role well
Chris Wright I feel you on that. If they did that purposely and specifically, Shane on them. I’m just not so sure it was done purposely based on skin tone. If there isn’t colorism in choosing a cast, this is exactly what a black cast should look like. Dark skinned black people and light skinned black people. That’s what we should ask for. To be given opportunities and representation based on our merit and not our skin color. As diverse as this cast was in skin tone, I’m not so sure I can believe that they chose a light skin woman because she’s light skin. I will say this though, it’s possible that times were changing and the diversity the casting team wanted to show in the beginning was not the same sentiment they had later on. That’s possible. I doubt that though. Not enough evidence of it on this show, but I did see how family matters did the same thing, but that’s a different show and that happened later. I will say that it’s possible that it was colorism though. I just doubt it. Fresh Prince and Cosby show specifically represented all shades of black pretty much, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt here.
Joseph Marcell broke down the Janet Hubert situation in the most respectful and tactful way possible. She made a MOVE and they said "okay we'll have to MOVE on without you then". Mr. Marcell being from a theatre background originally, knows actors are not indespensible and that if you can't do your performance,an understudy is waiting in the wings. He said he TRIED to tell her himself "ask for more MONEY" because she was already the female lead. They just called her bluff. The show only ran for six years and before that she hadn't sustained a T.V. role for as long as she did during her Aunt Viv period. It's a gig to gig profession and not a profession where you'll be doing the same character the rest of your career.
I agree with you completely! She thought she was too important to be replaced but as he said only he and James Avery had the experience and acting background thanks to their work in theater to know that everyone is replaceable, I also thought she was theater trained as well so did she forget this? She was unquestionably a better actor than Will, but at the end of the day it was his show, I think that is what Marcell meant when he said success corrupts. Anyway that's not what I really want to comment on, I want to comment on the latter part of your comment when you spoke about finding work in TV acting. She felt that she was blackballed but I remember reading a lot of different stories from older actors who said that what she experienced is actually very common. Obviously they were not talking about her. They were talking about the experience of leaving one hit show and then struggling to find work afterwards. She took it personally but I bet you right now you can pick any tv show and you can almost guarantee that any of the background supporting cast have not found another show to work on regardless of their race. That is just how the industry is; the lead character always finds work after the show ends but not the supporting cast. She took it personal as if she was being singled out but in reality even if she would have stayed on the show till the end more than likely she still would have struggled to find work afterwards.
Without a doubt there is more drama on her side to this story. Will Smith doesn't even produce anything on TV until 10 years later. It's kind of hard to run a blackball on a single actor in the entirety of television/show business in that 10 year span. That would be like saying Will Smith is hotlined into every audition or casting decision in the TV industry to give his approval. Or, in another analogy, yeah Cicely Tyson may of had her struggles during her career, but nobody could BLACKBALL Cicely Tyson...that's a TALENT/MONEY move thing. It's a business and TV wouldn't have given a damn about Will Smith (especially after he moved over to film),if they could cashed in on Janet Huebert's "immense"talent(s). She burnt some other bridges somewhere, people do that all the time(Ego will eat you up.).Look how humbled Spike Lee looked when Tyler Perry named a whole damn sound stage after him on his studio.(I'm no fan of Madea series myself...but other people are and I get that), but even Spike had to recognize, dude had tremendous vision that eclipsed him and had to squash his beef. That's good business.
I always said that Will Smith did not have that kind of clout back then to black ball her. Now, most definitely. But like it was said before, she forgot the show was Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Not Aunt Viv of Bel air.
@@ezgoing4eva True and if this was a discussion about the 'Living Single' cast of which Friends was a direct rip off and it was a money issue then this would be a valid point in the way they were treated. But as Mr. Marcell,Will Smith and Alphonse Robiero have all stated Janet Huebert was off on a tangent all her OWN,trying to make demands for herself, she wasn't repping the WHOLE cast. She sacrificed herself, she said either or and they chose or.Can't make a checkers move, while playing chess.
Definitely.... it was some stuff the original aunt viv would have never let happen... remember the pam Grier episode when she played Janice the one the got away? And will ended up hitting it.... The original aunt viv wouldn’t have even let her come and visit..... like we knew she was a professor.... but after the change of actresses we never saw her in a working capacity again.... and I don’t wanna hear “well it was will’s show” and how her role was too dominant ... each character hard their special episode or episodes even Geoffrey.... but aunt viv not so much..... her role was trash after the change...
The role wasnt diminished but changed into a more sympathetic, nice, well mannered and softer aunt viv. They couldnt bring the same role back with a whole different actress
That's not true, because the guy who played carlton did a interview and spoke about working with her. And how she ended up leaving the show. Look it up, it was a good interview.
A whole Geoffrey u kno. The only Geoffrey we acknowledge. Although he is well known for his role of Fresh Prince Bel Air he is a good actor and speaks very eloquently like a true OG..nuff respect due to #JosephMarcell.👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿
So her ego got her fired. Instead of being happy and accepting the leading woman role she wanted the show to revolve more around her. Simply because she had more experience than Will in acting. It’s a marathon not a sprint.
Her criticisms may have been correct but she signed to the show knowing what it was. Will Smith was the star and focal point; if she had a problem with a show revolving around a non-actor her anger shouldve been directed at HERSELF for joining that show. She got her dumb a$$ fired and deservedly so. Spends the next years ranting about it, showing people what a jerk she is. Will spends the next years as a box office champion and two time Oscar nominee. WHO'S the real actor now, Janet?
@@lilithdemonia74 I liked Janet in that role better than Daphne but I agree with you. If she had a problem with a "non actor" being the focal point of the show, then she shouldn't have signed her contract to be in it in the first place.
@@lilithdemonia74 you have the proper screen name for your vile and ignorant opinion. Will Smith is successful yes, but he's a successful puppet to a Satanic DEMONIC industry. That's nothing impressive or to admire.
Her not Respecting Will as an actor. Is what got her fired. She believed her resume should have given her more. And not accepting that it's WILL show. Not hers
Sean Tottenham she was actually Diagnosed of Cancer. I always wondered why Jada never invited her to the Red table since the “Red Table” is a place for “healing”
Will Smith was highly immature and unprofessional in his behavior...a major issue with the true professionals on the show. He had the same problem on the set of 'Made in America,' nearly getting fired for his tardiness and lax work ethics. Talk about ego, jeez.
When she left the show wasn’t the same it’s only one ☝🏾 Aunt Viv the other lady tried but it wasn’t the same no disrespect to her she’s an amazing actor but Aunt Viv didn’t fit her

Daphne Maxwell Reid was required to step into a role that was originated and created by another actress. Janet Hubert put her stamp on the role.
The show was still enjoyable after that. Sadly, Aunt Viv's/Janet's experience in the industry was too young for her to just wait her turn for her own success.
I tried but struggled to enjoy it after that. #1 Aunt Viv(Janet Hubert) embodied her character's background along with her success after marriage. She was so beautiful and charismatic. She also had the best chemistry with Uncle Phil. The next one didnt seem too at ease with even being baby Niki's mom and all we got was sweet with a pretty face with her. Maybe she just wasnt good for that role
In business “stay in your lane” is the written rule. Break that rule you most likely will be toast. Sometimes you just gotta come to work and be happy in the role you signed up for and I just don’t think she was happy so it was unfortunately time for her to go. It seems she still hasn’t found that place of “happy” and is still hurt over being let go. I hope for her sake she finds that happiness and place of peace. She is truly a talented actress
YES SHE IS, EVEN THO THAT HAPPEN GOD HAS SO MUCH FOR HER, SHES NOT THAT SHOW, YOU GOTTA FORGIVE, YOU HAVE TO NOT FOR THEM BUT FOR YOURSELF, SO THAT YOU CAN BE FREE.
I've wondered the same. Some people see bitterness as "keeping it real," but she really seems like she lacks joy. But maybe in other areas of her life she's happy. I hope so.
@T Martin Her clapback game may be fire, but she comes off as very bitter and vindictive. She was an elegant, talented and classy woman, and I wished that she would've had a more profile career. Sadly her son attempted suicide about 2 years ago, and after that she stated that she was through with social media. Hope she and her family are doing better.
@Killer Joe Clearly about Janet. She was the more "Esteemed" actress. She felt she was better than Will. So when the show started gaining traction, she clearly felt a way that this inexperienced actor/rapper, immature guy is the one that the show focused on. This is mirrored by multiple people in different ways whenever speaking about this situation.
@Killer Joe in the same way that Jeffrey speaks about having an acting background, going to acting school, etc. Janet also did the same. She also had experience in theater. That's what gave her an ego. You wouldn't have seen her in anything before, because like most of the cast, this was her first TV acting gig.
Dunno if you saw the red table talk but they offered her ten weeks of work and she couldn't work anywhere else while she had a young child to take care of.
She was given a lower wage offer, which was really an attempt, to make her quit, and it worked. Janet was yelling on people, on set. She was becoming a moody problem.
Janet Hubert reminds me of my nephew. He lost a very good job 30 years ago by making a bad decision (initially quit then tried to go back) and he hasn't been the same since. He can't seem to move on and continues to blame the people at that job foe ruining his life. Janet is tbe same way. Bitterness just leaps out from the screen everytime I see her. It is said because she was so talented. Her hatred of Will has ruined her and meanwhile he is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I believe that it was her own ego which caused the problem. Even to this day she seems to have a very inflated opinion of herself while talking down on others. She should have used that opportunity to get her own show later but she couldn't get out of her own way.
I agree with you totally. I think it also must sting that she actually caused her own downfall. That is the part of this that she can't accept, so she blames it all on Will. TV One did a life after special on Janet Hubert. With a pretty significant lack of self-awareness, she described in detail exactly why she was fired. She had a nasty attitude on set with most of the cast and crew. She also recalled an incident when she didn't like Will Smith's stand-up pre-show routine, so she confronted him about it on stage in front of a live audience. The most ironic thing of all that she said during the special was that working on Fresh Prince was the easiest money she had ever made. She blew a good thing and had a pretty hard and brutal fall.
@Mitch G I'll use the same dumb ass reasoning that others used against Alphonso Ribeiro, She doesn't like black men. She's married to a white man and dated white men for a lot of her career. See how dumb that sounds though?
I do remember Janet saying they couldn't take other roles while on the show. I'm sure she was getting other offers & that may have led to her inflated ego but having to decline bcuz of Will a new actor & his show I still have to understand her fustration. So many commenters are still going with the angry black woman narrative smh 🤦🏽♀️
@@TheeGoddessQUEEN I understand what you're saying but I think what she meant was theater roles not Hollywood roles. That is why Marcell said "success corrupts" because she was enjoying the fame she got from being on TV even though she was probably acting prior to that for years on stage. Let's be real. There's probably hundreds of great theater actors/actresses now that can outperform your biggest stars but at the end of the day people are going to flock towards that celebrity over that better but unknown actor/actress. She knew what she was doing when she was turning down those roles; she was chasing fame.
Janet was like the actress from Gilligan's island who played Ginger, Tina Louise, she couldn't accept that the show didn't revolve around her. I am glad things were cleared up. Some people need to realize that what's for you is for you.
Most of us share this opinion and some dont, but Janet really was a key piece to the show. She fit the role of a Aunt stepping up to be a Mother. The 2nd aunt viv just seemed to laid back and not fully intact as a character
@@suntansuperman26 I understand your point but as a pro I would think she would be able to add her own flavor to it. But then again that's what kind of got Janet fired
It seems like Daphne Reid didn't feel comfortable there. I always wonder why they hired her specifically. She didnt look like she was friends with the cast. And she wasnt great at the role. So I never understood why she was selected. I kinda felt sorry for her. They just threw her in there!! Its like they psychologically killed off the character.
I stopped watching after a Janet left. Honestly, I didn’t find the replacement funny. I found her acting. . .stiff and no comedic timing. It made me cringe.
People get the big head or get greedy feeling like they deserve more, which is understandable if you are contributing like she was, but they forget it's not they business or they show and they can be easily replaced by someone who is hungry to take what they took forgranted!!!
Aunt Viv may have been replaced but she WASN'T replaceable. The show went down the hill when SHE left so apparently SHE was a big part of FPOBA & it's ratings.
Black Girl Magic you can’t really replace main characters that far into a beloved show. We wouldn’t have felt comfortable with any of those actors being replaced, by better actors or not because we got used to one person. That doesn’t mean they can treat their cast mates however they want, claim others don’t deserve their positions, or get as much money as they’re asking for. Being a beloved actor does not mean you won’t get let go from the show. Also, the show had some more good seasons. In my opinion, the second aunt Viv wasn’t as good as the first aunt Viv, but that’s not why the show “went down hill.” The writing SUCKED towards the end (minus some legendary episodes), and they didn’t write the same for the second Aunt Viv. They made her take a back seat. Plus, the writers just didn’t put in as much effort as they did in the beginning. That happens in all sitcoms. They were already planning on wrapping it up. Will let the cast know a year or two in advance that he would no longer be continuing, in order to give them all time to find other work. I think that’s when the writing got lazy because they knew it was ending. It’s not because the first Aunt Viv left. Will was the star.
"Jeffrey" seems to be impartial and trying to keep peace. This show was about THE Fresh Prince, which is Will Smith and he is the main character, the star. She says that they treated him a certain way and everyone was made to "worship" him, so to speak. She is from the theater where she do her job and get paid and thats it. She never lowered herself and wasn't going to be bowing down to " some kid". Will Smith is a rapper and new to acting. She felt like he was treated like royalty and everybody had to do it. She was not. She felt she wasnt getting paid or will agree to do that because its just a show. But it wasn't her show. She was not the Star, so she either succumb or leave. That's how Hollywood functions.
Wow he looks good! Black really doesn't crack. I like that he didnt throw Janet under the bus. James Avery/uncle phil also said he told Janet that it was will's show. Sounds like that was difficult for her to accept especially with her coming from such a strong theatrical background. Which sucks because she was so good in that role and a great representation for black women.
Janet was on a TVOne show called Life After and she basically admitted that everything that was said was true. After watching that episode and hearing the things she said out of her own mouth, you would understand why she was replaced. They even offered her a recurring role until she got her ish together and she told them either I'm full time or nothing. She ended up with nothing. We all loved her as Aunt Viv but truth is truth.
@ that bitterness is so evident. It's sad. 25 years later and she's still wallowing in that hurt. If she would have gotten over it and released those people, she could have found something else. When her son attempted suicide, she even blamed Will for that. When is it gonna stop??
She should have continued to work on Fresh Prince, developed contacts and used the show to propel her into a role more fitting to her liking after TFP ended. Ego is the devil sometime.
She blew it and she knew it. i believed her, i believed what she was saying, Hollywood does not care, anyone can be replaced. She fought for what she believed in concerning her career and working with this silly kid Will at the time. You just don't mess with the Industry, you will be replaced!
You have to blame the writers alot for how the second Aunt Viv came across. When the cast change happened, they put Her in the background, took away her strong storylines, ect. They never gave her an opportunity to show what she could do.
What did she get an Emmy for just curious because I didn't know she was in anything but I would love love love to watch any material that she's in because I think she's a wonderful actress and honestly I wish they would have done whatever they had to to keep her as the first Aunt Viv cuz it just wasn't the same after she left.
I didn't really hear him say much of nothing. But everyone has decided she had an ego. People on shows always want more for their character and fight for it. That's what they do. Why is it got to be about her ego. 2 days later she wanted to agree to it. They didn't accept that. That should have told ya'll that there was more to it. Especially the fact she was a great Aunt viv who by everyone's answer loved her in the role. Wouldn't that have been the best thing for the fans. Most shows have difficult actors/actresses.
Yes, I agree with you. When everyone else fight for more of their role and pay. They are rewarded and praised for standing up for themself. And I've noticed other people getting more than one chance for more grievous accusations. When it comes to women of color you have one shot and you must keep your head down and don't ask for what you are worth else you won't work again. People only started believing monique because oprah and the others got exposed for their wicked ways. And everyone ganged up on monique and people's logic was since everyone is saying the same thing it must be true. At the end of the day everyone is going to look out for their paycheck instead of defending their castmate. If the executives tell you to stick to the story of her being difficult, they are going to protect their money. Just like terry crews said he doesn't know what Gabrielle union is talking about, making her look like she isn't being truthful about her experience. And Janet Hubert has said the smiths have actively kept her out of work. She said some roles were not given because 'they' don't want to upset the smiths. I found that Jospeh still tried to remain neutral and he grazed over the disrespect(laughing and interrupting when people are speaking) that went on behind the scenes. You know how many colleagues bad talked Monique and people believed them until they were exposed. The vast majority of the public who told Monique that she needs to learn her place. And How many actors have been difficult/particular and still have work. How many actors had shady pasts and still have work. Yet the word 'difficult' still ruins black actresses.
@Texas Madam you seem to very opinionated. Nothing you have said changes the fact about what have been said about many actors attitude in the past. They weren't fired .You just decided to see it your way. That's your right. But don't act like you know best.
Can you not hear? He said it was PAST THE DATE! A multi million dollar production gives you a certain date to reply by and you reply beyond the date means that's on you. That's why you have understudies and back ups for when things like this happens. The lady replied too late and the show went on. PERIOD!
WHAT? Joseph was asked what he thinks of aunt-and INSTEAD OF SAYING dont Fire her-he says-I cannot have an opinion-WHAT AN INDECISIVE PERSON-WHO DOES THAT REALLY?
Tragic? No! Absolutely not! Disappointing? Yes. But a tragic situation involves a death, a serious illness or a life-altering injury. A tragedy does not involve someone losing their job on a hit TV show because their ego and greed got in the way. Get some perspective.

Mr. Marcell is a gentleman at it’s finest and the true meaning of lead by example.
Thank you for this interview. Mr. Marcell gave us the professional aspect of what happened before the release of Ms. Janet Hubert and he provided an insight without demeaning Will Smith or Janet Hubert. I felt like we finally heard the real deal from a mature and wise person who was part of this very good ensemble.
Oh my goodness! I used to watch that show when I spent the night over my friend's house back in the day. She was Jamaican and she had it on tape. I literally was trying to remember the name of it. Thanks.
The best interview I’ve seen in a long time. These guys let him talk the whole time and only asked great questions whenever he finished his thoughts . Brilliant!
GOSH!!!! Its been 27 years since Janet Hubert left the show and this is the first time we have been given a clear explanation! Thank you Joseph Marcelle!!! You’re a Brit through and through and explained yourself and described the circumstances surrounding this issue very clearly. I think everything finally makes sense. Whilst the first aunt ViV was clearly the better actress, It seems she saw herself as the star of the show. Its just a shame that despite her theatre arts training that her career basically just nosed dived after the show. I think she has regretted ever since, and has been’ blacklisted’ in Hollywood as a result. The world of show biz is a murky messy world. Well all is said and done, some 30 years later, whilst Will Smith had all the blockbuster movies money and fame, his personal life and marriage is in tatters and has been laid bare by him and his wife at his red table talk. In this pandemic and beyond, most actors will be struggling including Will. Wish the entire interview was broadcasted...... .
I’ve always loved Janet as Aunt Viv, but when I see her conduct herself in interviews, her spirit didn’t always sit well with me. She seemed to be harbouring animosity about what happened many years later. I wasn’t sure why she was still so angry, but now it makes sense. She’s angry with herself. I have no idea what changes she needed to make on the show, but if her ego and pride is STILL this strong about what happened, I can only imagine what it was like when she was getting Fresh Prince cheques and in the height of her career. The show is about WILL. Period. Sometimes we have to learn to embrace the blessings we have been given and stop the entitled attitude. She just cut off her nose to spite her face.
She's been in way more things than Daphne after the show. It's out there for people to see. Its not secret. Maybe its HER. Will hasn't blackballed anyone. Will did a good job transitioning to acting. Think of ALL the rappers in Television today. I was 13 when this show came out and Wil was called a sellout for becoming a actor. Mainly because his rap was clean, he went into Hollywood and this started in September 1990. Gangsta Rap starting to become a thing and among MANY hip hop fans he was slighted a lot i felt.. If you don't remember that ....please don't lie. Acting was not big among rappers at the time and to have no acting experience...Will was good and funny as hell. Very natural. I can very well see her being jealous at this young kid coming in and getting alot of shine with her having more acting experience.

This was excellent for so many reasons. We finally got the truth of what happened but without all of the petty bitterness of trying to destroy someone's character. It was easy to see that he was trying his hardest not to speak badly about her.
I have to think, was it Janet having a big ego or was it Janet fighting for herself worth in the industry as a woman and as a dark skinned woman (people didn't talk about colorism out loud at that time)? People will call a black woman crazy for speaking up. Then years later is told maybe we should have taken more value in what she is saying. That's what happening now in Hollywood. But I really thought his comment on the situation was very well said and unbiased in his delivery.
Except Janet didn't have "receipts" in the tv business to be soo demanding. Yes, you should ask for what you're worth but she should've humbled herself and got a few more seasons under her belt first. Plus it wasn't just about the money - she had a bad attitude and didn't respect what her co-stars brought to the table.

I think she definitely had her ego and her own issues, but she's not entirely at fault either. I see her as a complex person with flaws but also great talent and authenticity.
A question for everybody,..of all the characters on the 'Fresh Prince', who do y'all think deserved a spin-off show? I say 'Jeffrey'! A wise crackin' butler is always funny! Remember Benson?
I feel Janet should have had her own show after she was replaced. Janet playing a black independent woman making it work in the United States (maybe as a high school teacher in the inner city).
Janet should not have been jealous about Will's quick success in acting. It totally ruined her. If you want more money, negotiate it with the producers without getting other actors involved.
This trend is so weird:...Florida wasn't a fan of JJ. Harriet left the show because of Urkel and Aunt Viv didn't get along with Will.....I think she wanted to be another Claire Huxtable but Will was getting all the attention.
He tried to stay as respectful as he could. I love both Aunt VIVS but as he said The show was named The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Will Smith was the lead star.
I Always Remember This Classic Scene, "Cannon To Right Of Them, Cannon To Left Of Them, Cannon In Front Of Them Volleyed And Thundered!!!"... 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 #24Sev #Bosh
If even today she can't see in hindsight that it was Will Smith's show that was written for him specifically and she was a supporting actress then somethings mentally wrong with her. Good actress or not, I am sure the creators, producers, directors and her advocates spoke to her and explained the supporting role. It was not the Fresh Aunt Viv of Bel Air & James Avery Uncle Phil understood and he was as accomplished as Janet. Girl Bye.
His name was literally in the title I'm not for sure what she expected. Not to mention like he said, she was the female lead. She actually shot herself in the foot
They couldn't even take outside work while working on the show that was another reason why she had problems. They were literally stopping her bag. So don't just blame her.
Everyone has great points, but when you agree to take an acting job by signing a contract, you have an agents, you read the script, rehearse and all that then you should know the premise of the show, what the role is and whether your contract has a clause that you can not take on other jobs or you can only take on other jobs during your hiatus. She has spoken her truth for at least 15 yrs, and her story has never waivered, so if there's more let go & let God.
The producers & Will Smith underestimated how important Janet Hubert was to the show. She added a snap to the character of Aunt Viv that no one came close to achieving. When Hubert left, the show declined and became uninteresting. Just my opinion.
Tbh I disagree. Aunt Viv might have been an important character to the plot in a lot of cases and basically the female lead, the show was defined by its lead character Will and his cousin Carlton plus their relationships in and outside the family, plus G providing the comedic relief. It felt a little bit nicer to put more emphasis on Hilary and Ashley rather than Vivian too
@@enigma8301 Yet the show went into a tailspin once she left. Daphne Maxwell-Reid couldn't and didn't fit the role. In an interview with Ebony Will Smith not only admitted that firing Janet Hubert was a huge mistake, he also admitted the show never recovered once she left. Facts. Have a good day and goodbye 👋👋👋👋👋
Loretta McClure I agree yes, but that doesn’t mean that the show was bad with Daphne. It’s just that she didn’t get as much character development as the original Aunt Viv (but that doesn’t mean that she is a worse actor for example). Personally, I really liked her laidback personality. It provides a contrast to Uncle Phil’s like passive-aggressive tough love approach, rather than her being just a female uncle phil.
I was not aware that Janet Hubert did 74 episodes as Aunt Viv, while Daphne Reid did 75 episodes as Aunt Viv! You would never know that by listening to most people saying that the show went downhill with Daphne in the roll! Also, Janet has to take some of the blame over how things turned out! I have never seen a video in which she says anything nice about any of the Fresh Prine cast members, nor have I seen a video in which any of the other cast members come to her defense!!
I first heard about the Janet Hubert drama about 15 years ago. In every interview I've seen, almost every cast member would skate around the question of why she left the show without giving a complete answer. This was the most complete answer to that question yet. Wayne Rogers, who played Trapper John in "M*A*S*H", went through something similar without the public drama and media attention. All reports say he left the show because he wasn't comfortable being Alan Alda's sidekick. When the show first started, they were pretty equal. As the show progressed, the fans and the studio gravitated toward Hawkeye being the lead character and Trapper John as a supporting role. Wayne's pride couldn't deal with it, so he left at the end of season 3. It sounds like Janet went through something similar, but was far more vocal about her displeasure once she left, and just got louder as the years progressed.
I just hate how everyone kisses Wills ass! Not saying Joseph just did, but the truth of the matter is like he just said. You had 7 actors with seven careers and no-one wanted to put their career on the line. Short version: Even is they felt she was right. They weren't gonna back her play and lose their jobs. None of them saw the talk with her and Will so I'm guessing they still dont know what really happened. While they were out there laughing at all Wills jokes. She was simply in her dressing room waiting to be called for her scenes. She didn't find him fun and she really just couldn't at the time. Imagine an Abused woman coming to work everyday and pretending her life was fine. She didn't cause problems. She just kept to herself and Will felt threaten because he wasn't funny to her. He literally said those very words
Personally, I am mostly Team Hubert. She was a classically trained actress who paid her dues. I don't think she was dumb enough to think the show was about her. But it was an ensemble show. I think she wanted to shine more when given the opportunity and apparently Will was not having it. He knew he was the star and would have scenes removed and he did not support the cast in getting a raise as an ensemble. Will was looking out for Will. He was also young too. This caused them to butt heads. She probably should have just accepted the cards she was dealt with. But I think she was too strong and real to go for that. She was not going to lay down and be walked upon. This is why they let her go and then painted her as difficult to the point she was blackballed. That's my opinion.
I agree, I definitely believe that she was blackballed because she decided to leave and the people behind the scenes painted her in a badlight for doing so.
The fact that the show was never the same without Janet showed just how big her contribution was. She was worth it. The fans got screwed over because Will felt threatened. He didn't want anyone to outshine him.
Joseph Marcell was so positive and classy as he talked about his experience on the show and Janet Hubert. The headline of this video and the narrative has reduced Janet Huberts career as a black woman and placed her image to be of a jealous black woman who was outshined by a more talented black man and removed. Things were different back then culturally, that type of outward expression was taboo. She may have had a chip on her shoulder in reference to age. But what has continued to be perpetuated by the new generation and society is this Black man vs Black woman. This is getting bad.. This happens to people all the time in the business, so why is it that this instance makes her unsuccessful. I would have an attitude too if people continued to throw this in your face along with their false perspective about something they were not there for. A lot of people on the show we do not see anymore is that because of Will too? She has moved on...its public that hasn't
Well all the TEA channels will being using these clips... honestly though I loveeee him so much! As a child raised in the days where you had to actually wait for the next episode and no-skip advertisements whoa! I have an accent as well and being in the state young wasn’t easy. I love first Aunt Viv. I also hate how the internet reduced Daphne Reid to a meme. She does SO MUCH good work for black people, especially black students at HBCUs, along with her husband Tim Reid the Legend.
No disrespect to her but I mean she was technically the step mom of the Fresh Prince
My thing is it’s not her fault, you have to blame the writers for watering down the character. During the first Aunt Viv era they actually focused on developing the character, but after she left they stopped developing her character. I hate the whole vs thing because Mrs. Reid could only do what she’s given.
Interesting, thanks for that fun fact.

I think Alphonso has his own issues with black women and he is the only one that shows intense animosity towards Janet.
@@jaypaladin-havesmartswilll5508 exactly. You see who he's married to.

I like the first lady that was aunt viv I loved her blackness it wasn't pushy or over strong it was pure black magic the way she did her part
I feel like the writers wrote differently for the second aunt Viv. They took that aspect out of the character and made her take a back seat
I dont like the fact that they replaced Janet with a light skinned woman... i almost feel that was the plan all along. I loved Janet, she fit that role well
@@Febreze99 I'm starting to think that combining dark and light isn't such a good idea - two different types of people.
How can being black be pushy over the top? Do you like the way other actors who are not black are gentle and perfect?
The "FRIENDS" CAST stuck together and got what they wanted.

Yea the role definitely diminished, Aunt Viv just didn't feel as powerful or/and as important as she initially did.

The show was still enjoyable after that. Sadly, Aunt Viv's/Janet's experience in the industry was too young for her to just wait her turn for her own success.
She was just a different type of Aunt Viv.
I tried but struggled to enjoy it after that. #1 Aunt Viv(Janet Hubert) embodied her character's background along with her success after marriage. She was so beautiful and charismatic. In business “stay in your lane” is the written rule. Break that rule you most likely will be toast. Sometimes you just gotta come to work and be happy in the role you signed up for and I just don’t think she was happy so it was unfortunately time for her to go.

He can't seem to move on and continues to blame the people at that job foe ruining his life. Janet is tbe same way. Bitterness just leaps out from the screen everytime I see her.
@Mitch G ah mean legit reason or not, she needs to move on. You know how many opportunities can pass us by for legit reasons.
@Mitch G I'll use the same dumb ass reasoning that others used against Alphonso Ribeiro, She doesn't like black men. She's married to a white man and dated white men for a lot of her career. See how dumb that sounds though?
Oh white boys beem skeeting that box up? Damn. Didnt know.
@Mitch G Maybe she does. That being said, from the way it sounds (not just from this interview), she fired herself from a show that wasn't hers.
That had to be difficult for all. She was good but attitude is everything.
Lol that not true tell that to Kanye. Kardashians etc people will put up with egos
@@TheeGoddessQUEEN Not necessarily so, my sista. Hollywood is very messed up and scandalous.
I read about that. I guess the show's title being "Gilligan's Island" wasn't a big enough clue as to who the show would revolve around.
Most of us share this opinion and some dont, but Janet really was a key piece to the show. She fit the role of a Aunt stepping up to be a Mother. The 2nd aunt viv just seemed to laid back and not fully intact as a character
Reid could only go as far as the writers let her. They developed the first Aunt Viv but stopped after she left. Blame the writers not the actress.
Right 🤔🤔🤔
I stopped watching after a Janet left.
💯
Aunt Viv may have been replaced but she WASN'T replaceable. The show went down the hill when SHE left so apparently SHE was a big part of FPOBA & it's ratings.
@@batteriesnotincluded4715 , I agree..The proof is in the pudding..
@@batteriesnotincluded4715 they just explained that the show went on to do the same number of episodes as when Janet was on
Black Girl Magic you can’t really replace main characters that far into a beloved show.
Okaaay Jeffery aged well. Glad to see him doing well
I know that she had a helleva body. She was super fine.

@@JohnSmith-zd3ou , she probably was hard to work with, but Damn she was fine. OMG

Boom! She definitely would have gotten some gigs after even during the show.
Ego want allow to do such things.
Strongly agree
Always choose your words wisely rather than emotionally.

What did she get an Emmy for just curious because I didn't know she was in anything but I would love love love to watch any material that she's in because I think she's a wonderful actress and honestly I wish they would have done whatever they had to to keep her as the first Aunt Viv cuz it just wasn't the same after she left.
I have more respect for him. He is classy and keeping it professional.
A true gentleman. He really tried to be tactful.😊
Purple Diamond wow never thought about it this way but you’re right
Yes, I agree with you.
@Texas Madam cool!
Can you not hear? He said it was PAST THE DATE! A multi million dollar production gives you a certain date to reply by and you reply beyond the date means that's on you. Mr. Marcell is a gentleman at it’s finest and the true meaning of lead by example.
Thank you for this interview.

It wasn't his show, he was there like everyone else and he sucked
Barbie Rae : it’s called “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” NOT “Fresh Aunt Viv”, so ya it’s HIS show as the title is based on HIS character.

"Success corrupts." Well said by Joseph Marcell.
They couldn't even take outside work while working on the show that was another reason why she had problems. They were literally stopping her bag. So don't just blame her.
I don't BUY that she was jealous or couldn't take that Will was the lead. It was HIS show, that was a given. 🤔🤔🤔
Facts
Tbh I disagree. Aunt Viv might have been an important character to the plot in a lot of cases and basically the female lead, the show was defined by its lead character Will and his cousin Carlton plus their relationships in and outside the family, plus G providing the comedic relief. It felt a little bit nicer to put more emphasis on Hilary and Ashley rather than Vivian too
@@enigma8301 Yet the show went into a tailspin once she left. Daphne Maxwell-Reid couldn't and didn't fit the role.
Sounds to me like Janet allowed what she thought of herself to ruin her career?😳
