    Thats why I love your work... Nowadays when people break something they just throw it away and buy a new one, but I love restored stuff. There is so much love in a restored piece or tool than in a recently bought one. Good job!

    I rehabbed an incredibly rusty greenlee 3" boat slick that I bought at a garage sale for a buck. Mine didn't need welding (and I don't know how to yet). But derusting it, sharpening it and turning a new handle for it was so much fun. I don't have any practical use for it, but I like having it hanging on my shop wall. Handle is epoxyed into the socket so I don't cut my toes off next time I pick it up. I don't quite trust rosin for something that heavy, wide and sharp. Keep up the good work, brother.

    • @achappel

      Burnishing is the term for it, and yes, it's similar to sanding except the point is to use the heat generated from the process to removed the small fibers on the surface of the wood, in this case, oak, I believe.

    • @h2o270
      @h2o270 7 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      It's a carpenters slick. It is used in timber framing. You don't hit it like a chisel you push it kind of like a wood plane. That's why the handle is so long. The tape was a slick idea (pun intended)

      Looking at the break I think it was used (improperly) for wood turning. I can't think of any way(save a sledgehammer) that it would have broken other than someone thinking "large blade means I can turn lots of wood at once!" And snapping it in between the support and the piece. That may have been why the break was at an angle as well.

      @MattOGormanSmith 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you think of the 1000 ways a screwdriver is abused, a lot of them can be done to a chisel too. My guess is it was used to lever up tiles or something.

    Sicne you welded the chisel back together doesnt that mean you lost the temper of the metal?

    • @MaxMakerChannel
      @MaxMakerChannel 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ShopTalk I was thinking the same. He tried to keep it cool with the steel blocks underneath.

    • @pepper7220
      @pepper7220 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ShopTalk due the age of the tool it was most likely forged out of soft metal and at the leading edge a harder piece of material was forge welded on(maybe carbide/tool steel) and the crack was above that piece, therefore not effecting the temper of the leading edge. Also his tig welding process is in that big piece of metal under the slick acting as a heat sink pulls the heat down as apposed to outward effecting the temper. If he used another weld process less precise such as stick welding the results may have been different.

      normally you should only need to hand tighten this if you need more tightening something is worn out ! probably the tungsten shaft because of to much heat !

    • @littlestworkshop
      @littlestworkshop 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He said it was for unscrewing it not tightening it, brass threads can get stiff. If by tungsten shaft you mean the electrode, this has nothing to do with the rear cap.

    • @bananaguard5857
      @bananaguard5857 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      littlestworkshop well if the tungsten gets way overheated it can start to disintegrate, and then the collet needs to be tightened more to grip it, thus making the rear cap tighter.

    Nice! I have s sneaking suspicion that you do not intend to actually use that old slick very much. Polyurethane on the handle? Really? That shit will just give you blisters & discolour & ultimately flake & peel off if you do use it to any extent.
    Boiled linseed oil & beeswax would suit a tool like that just fine. I also suspect you know all this & just wanted to protect it & look nice & used what you had on hand. Once again, nice job. Good to see old things fixed up, put to use & cared for again. Now if only someone would do that with me.

      p1kto Mine don't either. I've had calluses since I was 10 yrs old. I'm in my 50's now. It is just that I have seen varnished handles or any type of poly coating tear hands apart after long use. Also it was a vintage, classic tool that deserved a more classic finish.

      Chiseling is a one direction operation. As you use the tool the handle is pushed into the socket. Theres no risk of it coming out really

      There is no need since the force acting on it only males the taper slide further in.

    The clay trick for fitting the handle to the socket was clever. I’ve seen a lot of chisel handles turned but I’ve never seen that done before.

      Welding burn. :) The arc is like a tanning bed on stereoids. I was "just gonna" once for like 10 minutes, and couldn't sleep for a couple of days from the pain..

      I'm pretty sure someone like this, who has worked with his hands for decades, doesn't have a whole lotta pain sensation in his hands anymore.

      he does this pretty much every day, and has so for the last 20 or so years. pretty sure his hands either always hurt, or don't hurt at all anymore.

    Was looking forward to this since the vlog. Glad you could save the broken bit. Would've liked to see it used more but thank you for the great video as always.

    Awesome job Jimmy, glad to see you kept the length on both ends. And it looks pretty functional to boot. Tools like that aren't meant to do every job (not a prybar lol) but when you need it its the only tool that will work. Merry Christmas to you and yours, and all the folks at the shop too.

    always learn a ton watching these videos; great to see old tools come back to life. you may want to try electrolysis for the rust cleaning; works a lot better than vinegar.

    Great video! I like how you brought back a broken tool destined for the scrap heap into a functional tool (with some scars that give it character)
