This game seems to represent politics at first glance, but it really doesn't.
I suggest a new gamemode that could possibly do that! Or maybe even a subfield game along the lines of what might gain attraction to players.
Game mechanics would esentially be the same, but instead, countries/nations can only send at most 200 military population to the islands they send them to. There'd also be a max 50-100 players in each server, and players can join in when the servers max fluctuates since they'd be open basically anytime. Each server would last 12-24 hours before they'd reset to make sure that players would actually stop playing for once and not die from the lack of sleep or other things due to sheer stupidity.
When countries/nations send their ships to other islands, they'd make a smaller, separate country/nation with their own military strength they've sent to the location, with it belonging to their player slot. This makes it fair so that smaller countries/nations on the islands could defend themselves from attacks, and not get defeated on the land they populated on when some large country/nation sends a single ship to defeat them as in the game currently.
Every player slot will originally be a bot, and a random player would fill in each of those bots depending on the availability. Alongside of that, the process of taking a part of another country/nation changes the size of that slot. If you completely take that country/nation over, it becomes a territory (that belongs to you, but is technically separate) from the point you started to attack and finish within that same frame of the battle. This makes sense since citizens still exist within that country/nation and you've essentially annexed them. Your main goal would to shrink them down with every attack before they would be destroyed, but at least still existing as a small territory due to gameplay reasons. Many would/could fight back to become a small territory, but some might accept annexation (Not fight back, or unable to save themselves) and become a relatively large territory. They'd be removed from that slot and the territory might declare its independence after 45-60 seconds so that the slot is available again. If players disconnect or leave, the slot is available for any new joining players.
Functions, such as alliances (enhanced non-aggression pacts that forbid a country/nation from attacking fellow allies unless they decided to leave after accepting 30-60 seconds of participating in one), trade (which is basically transporting country/nation resources (power/strength) to another as from the original concept of teams. Green ships would transfer it to countries not side by side to reduce abuse of distance resource transferring, with the color indicating the passive delivery of resources. Countries/nations side by side trade instantaneously), empires (Which are basically multiple countries/nations fused), treaties (Which signify that a country/nation gives up (possibly land) or if the countries/nations want to stop fighting to recover for a short minute or two), and other original features of the main game would be included to make things entertaining. Land should also be able to be given to another country/nation without necessary war if countries/nations want less aggression or alliance building.
Non-aggression pacts would be changed to delay the time of a traitor country attacking with 5 seconds before it would break and result in a battle (if used). This makes it look less predictable and pointless/abused.
The communication system should 100% be modified. Even in the original game. Lets be honest. Emojis don't cut it.
I'd be looking forward for a gamemode or game like the one above.

If you ever need to RAGE FULL SEND> Try and do the full send with a boat attack. It lasts so much longer and really delays their land grab. It's truly satisfying.
