I enjoyed all three parts of the series. Waiting for parts 2 & 3 of the potting series. Thank you dear!

Yes, the point that saturating the potting mix every time you water, is something that is often overlooked. I water all my plants including my cacti and succulents by showering them from the top first, then soaking them in a tub for half an hour and then showering them again. I do realize that some specific plants may not want to get water on their leaves, but mine are not like that I guess.

Thank you for this series of most useful videos🙏. As a new plant parent I have been afraid to overwater my plants. Root rot sounds like a plage to me. So thanks again! 🥰

I’m so glad I found you! Your perfect explanations of how to water and why my Aglaonema, while growing, had drooping lower leaves. Now one else addressed this problem & gave me the solution. Thank you, thank you!

Great video! A fourth way of watering combines the first and second ways. I do this by watering from above and letting the water that runs out the bottom collect in a saucer. I water slowly (especially when the soil is dry and hydrophobic), a little at first followed by a 10-15 minute interval followed by more watering, another short interval, etc., until the saucer is close to full. Then I wait. If I wait about 12 hours, the water will almost always be drawn back into the pot and I can be sure the entire root ball has been watered. I do this for all of my potted citrus trees and they are thriving. Thanks, again, for your videos.

Your point about flushing out toxins is well taken and reason not to follow my method all the time. Thanks for that important caution!

Love this channel as a relatively "new" plant keeper with a few "roots" in Sweden as well.
Just watched all 3 of these.
Water from fish tanks I use on all my plants (indoors & outside in UK) as I keep fish & my plant collection has exploded. Fish waste = Nitrates ( fish keepers nemesis to reduce) with = temp of (average) 25c = Happy plants. NEVER tap water. It certainly is a science.
    Great channel.

Love this watering series and also the one on fertilizing. Wondering if you can do a video on pitcher plants, nepenthes. I have one that thrives in the summer outside but is shriveling up now in mid-winter.

I grow Fiddle leaf figs. My water has a lot of chemicals in it. (I’m in the US). I water my plants with distilled water. Using rain water is good too.

For folks in the US, at least, find out if your municipality uses chloramine for tap water. Many do, now, and that will not off-gas like chlorine does!

We have similar issues with water in aquariums and we solve them with water conditioners that bind chlorine, chloramine and heavy metals.
I think that other [emersed] plant people are starting to use them too

I'm in Michigan. Surrounded by the Great Lakes. Tap water kills my plants, I have to use purified bottled water for them. We can smell the chlorine in the water as it comes out of the faucets at my house.

Hello. I have several peperomia plants that I struggle with :) They are so sensitive to watering from the top, so I now only water from the bottom with better success. What do I actually do with plant nutrition here? I want to remember that in another video you talked about how the nutrients "get stuck" in the soil when you water from above, so how do I actually do plant nutrition with bottom watering here!? :)

apart from expensive filters, chloramines and fluorine are not easily removed from water, and standing water for a day wont do it either. you can collect rainwater, if that's an option, or you can use aquarium water conditioner product.
i'm experimenting with using malic acid to slightly acidify my ph neutral tap water. malic acid is fairly cheap from brewery supplies, in powder form. you only need a tiny bit of the acid.
although research is about outside soil, additions of malic acid promotes plant friendly bacteria.

It is interesting that you brought up the watering technique - either from the top or from the bottom. Certain plants like phalaenopsis orchid or Asian cymbidium have crown rots or root rots very easy if you don't carefully watch the amount of water you would use for watering these plants. Most of us damaged our plants due to over watering. Orchid plants, in general, may prefer watering from the bottom up.

Hi. More and more often I notice that the soil does not dry out completely and some plants have roots in poor condition. I have already transplanted them to new soil, but half above the roots I threw away. Should I leave the plant unwatered for a while, or should I water it a little in the new soil?

I would think that nylon (plastic) rope is hydrophobic and would be a poor wicking material! Maybe substitute it with natural rope!
    Great series guys thanks!🙏🙏🙏

    • @HAL-dm1eh
      @HAL-dm1eh ปีที่แล้ว

They started using nylon because natural materials rot on the average user who isn't aware and isn't good at maintaining plants, which is who the system was invented for.

Hello from France ! Thanks a lot for all your video ! Can you tell me if the reserved pots Elho are good for Philodendron in aroid mix substrat?! . I ask you that because everybody say that you have to let dry your substrat before giving water again and with those pots they always have water . So I’m just wondering if its good ?!… ( sorry for my english😅😂)

Unless you are 100% certain that all of your plants are healthy and pest free, I would not recommend using the same water to bottom water multiple plants.
