First-year Goldman employees raise concerns about work-life balance

Junior investment bankers at Goldman Sachs are suffering burnout from 100-hour work weeks and demanding bosses during a SPAC-fueled boom in deals, according to an internal survey done by a group of first-year analysts.
The surge in activity has taken a serious toll on analysts’ mental and physical health since at least the start of the year, according to slides released to social media and authenticated by people with knowledge of the matter.
“The sleep deprivation, the treatment by senior bankers, the mental and physical stress ... I’ve been through foster care and this is arguably worse,” one Goldman analyst said, according to the February survey of 13 employees.
“My body physically hurts all the time and mentally I’m in a really dark place,” another analyst said.
The slide show, replete with color-coded charts and formatted in the official style of an investment banking pitch book, was created after a group of disgruntled analysts banded together to survey their colleagues, according to the people. The discord originated in the bank’s technology, media and telecom team, a marquee group that has been at the center of the SPAC-fueled IPO storm, according to the people. The team had seen elevated levels of attrition, the people said.
First-year analysts are typically recent college graduates and occupy the lowest rung in Wall Street’s hierarchy; above them are associates, followed by vice presidents and managing directors.
The Wall Street model is to hire thousands of entry-level workers every year, often top graduates from upper-tier universities, to create a pipeline for talent and a workforce dedicated to the more mundane aspects of investment banking. Junior bankers trade a grueling workload for pay that’s higher than the average American salary and a shot at eventually earning multimillion-dollar compensation packages as a managing director.
Conditions on Wall Street became a hot topic in 2013 after a Bank of America intern in London died after reportedly working a stint of sleepless nights. The industry then began adopting protected weekends, where junior employees couldn’t work on a Saturday or Sunday without manager approval.
Still, despite the changes, the industry’s hard-charging culture remains. Goldman survey respondents called conditions “inhumane,” saying that working 110 hours a week often leaves just four hours a day for sleep and self-care. They also complained about being given unrealistic deadlines and being ignored during meetings and said they were unsatisfied with the firm.
While the survey was from a small sample of Goldman employees, the bank took their concerns seriously, the people said. Goldman executives met with the employees last month and told them they were boosting the hiring of junior bankers to address the workload, they said. The bank has also transferred employees to bolster busier teams and has been working to automate aspects of their jobs.
The 13 employees weren’t punished for creating the survey, a segment of which was posted this week on the Instagram account Litquidity, the people said.
“We recognize that our people are very busy, because business is strong and volumes are at historic levels,” said Nicole Sharp, a Goldman spokeswoman. “A year into COVID, people are understandably stretched pretty thin, and that’s why we are listening to their concerns and taking multiple steps to address them.”

100 hours is pretty common in startups too. My first job at a startup was similar. One time we started working at 7 am and were working till 4 am of the next day lol It was insane, like 20-21 hrs in one go when we had a huge product lauch.

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I have a little sympathy for them. They have not been lied to, they have chosen a job that compensates you for a terrible work life balance. I did an internship and I felt that it wasn't for me. The majority of these people would have done insight weeks, internships. They knew what they signed up for, and that is fine. But don't complain now about your work life balance in a job that never lied to you about how long you had to work
Exactly this. they are there cos they want to climb the rungs of banking and then at one point in their career do it to those below them. Its a cycle. They know exactly what they signed up for, its the nature of the job. I have a job that respects my mental health, i enjoy and have a life outside of it but ultimately if all you care about is money then i guess that path is for you.

@@Wongseifu548 I mean, first year would probably be about 50-85k with a 30-50k bonus, and you’d make more the following year. Oftentimes people do it just for a couple years to get some exit options that pay more and demand less of soulless lifestyle. Hard to justify for some, but those who are getting those entry level jobs know what they’re signing up for.

It doesn't really work like that. When you've completed your grueling years of being an analysts, the reward you'll get of living a promising career is incomparable.

The same goes for public accounting. Anyone who joins Goldman Sachs does so because they want to become wealthy and are aware going into it that the tradeoff is at the expense of their free time and relationships in their 20s and 30s. It will continue as long as people keep applying. The issue is when you hear 100 hours per week thrown around in college, you think "I can do that", but reality hits hard when you actually work that 100 hour work week. After experiencing two busy seasons in public accounting, I made the decision that money didn't matter to me as much as I thought it did. If you're willing to cap out at $120k a year +/-, you can find a job that requires 40 hours per week and you will have plenty of time for your hobbies and relationships.
Nothing is more mind numbing or soul-sucking than working long hours doing repetitive busy work.

Considering the people I have talked to on wall street it is very true. The very least I've heard is at least 70 hours a week on light days. Alot of people on wall street get into work at 5 am and don't leave until 9 pm. Why else do you think the "perks" of expense accounts are even given

Those analysts are probably recent college graduates and making around $200k-$250k/yr. It is naive to think you are going to make that kind of money as a 22 or 23 year old and not be expected to put in long hours.

In the argument about stimulus in early 2020 and UBI in general, you hear a lot of people talk about "But if your don't work, where do you find meaning?" Work-life balance is the other side of that coin. Some people see their career as their life, but you can't impose on others that their career must be their life. Those who place work over family and quality of life will always out compete those who put life over work. A UBI will help those who refuse to place work over life and family, which tend to lean female, to not feel as desperate that they have to prioritize work in order to keep their job and feed said family.

Having spent a career in automotive working longer hours than this, I can tell you the 20 years of time for me passed as a blur and I never considered the impact on my life and my family till after I retired a couple years ago. Even then, it took a long time for me to realize that it wasn’t worth it.
There is this belief that working long hours was somehow an identity, honorable, or even a privilege because the position I had - it wasn’t till a friend who was a nurse told me - “I’ve never seen someone on their death bed ask to work one more day, they always lament that they should have spent more time with their family.”

What limited time on this earth is spent chasing money endlessly. I’ve never met anyone in my life who was proud of working that much in their younger years. I stood at the WFC marina, looking at the Goldman HQ building for maybe a half hour one morning four years ago. Nobody above the first floor. I then went over to the first floor entrance. Busy busy Penny Lane style. Do I believe my eyes and experience, or do I listen to Kate Kelly tell me what it is that I know? 20 years of this warmed over pretense. Headbangers never quit. And, Joe needs to leave the studio and walk a few blocks in any direction. If he does not wish to disrupt his “same old” narrative, my advice would be to not look above the first floor. They get great training... And then they are either dead or mentally and physically damaged for the rest of their lifes. Also begs the question: what intelligent person in their right mind would sign up for this?! Yes you get good training but what does it count if you have anxiety issues, cancer, shed of years of your life or don't make it out alive at all? People still don't get that most diseases are lifestyle dependent - they arise from a wrong way of living, too much stress, etc. You can't tell your body "hey I will work 100hr weeks with 4 hours of sleep and eat cup ramen for the next 2 years, but hey, it is the best training and it is just for 2 years" and then expect that you will do this an come out undamaged on the other side. Expect lasting consequences.
They're not expecting a 9 to 5am job? This is the top of the top of financial industry, the highest rung of ALL corporate America. No one feels sorry for anyone making +$100k a year at the age of 22, no matter how hard they work. Becuase the fact of the matter is they can and will be replaced, if not immediately terminated after voicing political opinion especially if they are not anonymous in these style of reports to the news media.
1st year Analysts very rarely will make $100k... However, it’s all about proving yourself as an Analyst and getting rewarded later in your career. That being said though, they knew what they were signing up for. At least they are being honest about how they really feel about their current situation.

@@tightywhitey9779 Any first year analyst can easily break $100k total compensation. Their base can range from $85-100k with a bonus up to 30-70+% of their base. If you include their sign-on bonus and relocation (if applicable), their first year total compensation can be $200k.
They are there by choice right? So they have every right to leave if not happy working at GS, what's the big deal!

وأما موطن استشهادهم، فقولهم أن البيت المعمور فوق الكعبة دائماً أبداً - بشواهد حديثية ربما لا تصح بالضرورة - وأنه في السماء السابعة الواقعة فوق الأجرام التي نراها جميعاً، ... وإذا كان ذلك كذلك، فلا بد أن تكون الكعبة والأرض في مركز الكون (بظنِّهم).
هذا ويكمن الخطأ في الاستدلال في أنه إذا كان البيت المعمور في السماء السابعة والواقعة على مسافات تفوق كل الأجرام المرئية، فلا يمكن أن يقع فوق الكعبة المشرفة دائماً أبداً، لأن الأرض تدور يقيناً بالكعبة، وعندها يكون شاهد الحديث في ذلك ضعيفاً، وإذا كان شاهد الحديث صادقاً في نفسه، فلا بد أن يكون البيت المعمور قريباً، أي أن السماء السابعة قريبة (وهو موضوع دراسة أخرى).

مقدمة
لا يستطيع إنسان عاقل أن يقبل أن تزدوج شخصيته العلمية، فيؤمن في دينه بما يخالف ما يقبله من أدلة علمه المهني الذي قامت عنده الأدلة على صدقه، فيؤمن على السبيل المثال في أبحاثه الفلكية وقناعاته الكونية بما يعاند كتاب الله تعالى وصحيح حديث رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، إلا أن يكون مخادعاً نفسه موهوما؟ والقانع من الناس بمثل هذا - راضياً مطمئناً - أقرب إلى الجهالة منه إلى العلم. فبعض العلم أضر على صاحبه من الجهل المطبق إن أدَّى لاعتقادات متخالفة، يقبلها جميعاً دونما حرج. ومثال ذلك أن الإيمان ببيت معمور في السماء تصديقٌ منعقد تلقَّاه العلماء بالقبول والإجماع استناداً لما اتُّفق عليه في الصحيحين - البخاري ومسلم - مما جاء في حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في حادثة الإسراء، وتفسيراً للمُقْسَم به في قوله تعالى "وَالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ"(الطور: 4). ويَلحق به ما نُقل لنا من أسانيد أخرى من أن البيت المعمور حيال الكعبة؛ أي فوقها تماماً؛ بصفته حقٌ يجب الإيمان به (إن ثبت النقل في ذلك عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم).
هذا من جهة الغيب الواجب التصديق به ديناً. أما علم الفلك الحديث فيجيء فيه التصديق - الرصدي الحسابي - بدوران الأرض حول نفسها من جهة، وحول مركز ثقلها مع القمر من جهة ثانية، وحول مركز ثقل المجموعة الشمسية من جهة ثالثة، وحول مركز ثقل المجرة من جهة رابعة، وفيما لا يعلمه إلا الله من حركة تلك المجرة في الكون من جهة خامسة، ثم وقوع كل هذه الحركات معاً في آن واحد. وكل هذا تصديقٌ منعقدٌ أيضاً بدرجاته. والجمع بين تصديقين متعارضين متنافيين حرج في القلب والعقل سوياً. وقد قال الله تعالى "هُوَ اجْتَبَاكُمْ وَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ"(الحج: 78). فما المخرج من هذا الحرج في مسألة علوية البيت المعمور للكعبة المشرفة دائماً أبدا على الاستقامة، وتعارض ذلك مع دوران الأرض المتعدد الوجوه وما يلزم عنه؟
قال ربنا جل وعلا: "وَالطُّورِ، وَكِتَابٍ مَسْطُورٍ، فِي رَقٍّ مَنْشُورٍ، وَالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ، وَالسَّقْفِ الْمَرْفُوعِ، وَالْبَحْرِ الْمَسْجُورِ، إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ لَوَاقِعٌ، مَا لَهُ مِنْ دَافِعٍ"(الطور:1-8). فما أعظم المُقسم به، وما أعظم المقسم عليه. ولو لم يكونا كذلك، لما كان القسم.
نؤمن بكليهما ولا نقول لربنا إلا ما يُرضيه جل شأنه أنْ سمعنا وآمنا وأطعنا، فاللهم أعنَّا وأنِر بصَائِرنا، وقِنا ما أقسمت عليه، فلا نكونن من أهله.
ويلزم عن إيماننا بما نسمع من كلامه جل وعلا أن نؤمن بما يلحق كلامه من سنة ثابتة شارحة ودلالات لازمة، ولا شارح لما نفهمه عن ذات "الْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ" موضعاً وهيئةً وغرضاً إلا ما نُقل لنا من سنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لكون هذا الأمر من الغيب، فكل ما نطق به حقٌ لا مراء فيه إذا ثبت عنه، فهو عن ربه مبلغ، ولا ينطق في ذلك عن هوى.
غير أنَّا عَلِمْنا عن الأرض أشياء كثيرة؛ ترقى إلى اليقين. منها ما هو في موضع الأرض من محيطها من أجرام، ومسيرها وانتقالها، وتركيب مادتها السطحية وبعض الجوفية وتفصيل عناصرها.. .إلخ ما هنالك. وتنسحب هذه المعرفة على كل ما على الأرض مما تحمل من جبال وبحار وأبنية، فلا تدور الأرض إلا ومعها كل شيء في موضعه النسبي من غيره، وأهم ما في ذلك في موضوعنا الكعبة المُشرَّفة.
القول بأن البيت المعمور فوق الكعبة تماماً، ومن وراء ذلك مركزية الكعبة للكون!!!
قال الإعجازيون[1]: "جاء القَسَم الرابع (في سورة الطور) بصياغة " وَالْبَيْتِ المَعْمُورِ " : وهو بيت في السماء السابعة حيال الكعبة ـ أي مقابلتها إلى أعلى على استقامتهاـ وهو أيضا حيال العرش إلى أسفل منه وعلى استقامته, تعمِّره الملائكة, يصلى فيه كل يوم سبعون ألفاً منهم، ثم لا يعودون إليه كما روى ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم , وهو لأهل السماء كالكعبة المُشرَّفة لأهل الأرض.
ويروى عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال يوما لأصحابه :" هل تدرون ما البيت المعمور؟ " قالوا : الله ورسوله أعلم. قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: " فإنه مسجد في السماء بحيال الكعبة لو خر لخر عليها , يصلى فيه كل يوم سبعون ألف ملك، إذا خرجوا منه لم يعودوا آخر ما عليهم ".
ويروى عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم وصفاً مُشابِهاً للبيت المعمور في حديث الإسراء والمعراج كما جاء في الصحيحين"
أول ما نلاحظ على هذه التصريحات والروايات أنها خالية من التحقيق. فلا تدري صحة هذه الرواية من تلك. والأهم أن هذا الإسناد وما بني عليه من آراء ليس تصريحاً عابراً، بل قد تكرر بصياغات واستشهادات متنوعة على مدى سنوات.
وقالوا أيضاً[2]: " توسط الأرض للكون، وهو معنى لا تستطيع علوم الفلك إثباته لعجز الإنسان عن الإحاطة بأبعاد الكون, ولكن يدعم هذا الاستنتاج ما رواه كلٌ من قتادة والسدي أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال يوما لأصحابه : " هل تدرون ما البيت المعمور؟. قالوا: الله ورسوله أعلم. قال صلى الله عليه وسلم: " فإنه مسجد في السماء بحيال الكعبة لو خر لخر عليها، يصلي فيه كل يوم سبعون ألف ملك، إذا خرجوا منه لم يعودوا آخر ما عليهم " ."
ونقرأ لهم أيضاً[3]: " استقراءاً لآيات القرآن الكريم ولأحاديث خاتم الأنبياء والمرسلين صلى الله عليه وسلم، يتضح بجلاء توسط مكة المكرمة بين السماوات السبع والارضين السبع، وهي حقيقة دينية لا يمكن للعلم الكسبي أن يصل إليها[4] ... ومن مبررات ذلك ... حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ الذي يرويه مجاهد ـ رحمه الله ـ عنه بقوله : " إن الحرم حرم مناء من السماوات السبع والارضين السبع"، ولفظة (مناء) معناها القصد في الاتجاه والاستقامة مع كل من السماوات السبع والأرضين السبع ـ أي التواجد بينهماـ وعلى استقامة مراكزها، وتأكد ذلك بإثبات توسط الكعبة المشرفة للأرض الأولى ـ أي اليابسة[5].
(وأيضاً) حديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم المروي عنه بقوله: " البيت المعمور منا مكة " ووصف ذلك البيت المعمور في حديث آخر يروى عنه صلى الله عليه وسلم بقوله: "هو بيت في السماء السابعة على حيال الكعبة تماما حتى لو خر لخر فوقها."
ونقرأ[6]: "من أقوال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم : " البيت المعمور منا مكة. " أي في مقابلتها وبمحاذاتها. (ويذكر حديث قتادة والسدي مرة أخرى، ويتابع:) ويزيد ذلك تأكيدا حديث رسول الله ـ صلى الله عليه وسلم ـ الذي يُروى عنه أنه قال فيه: "كانت الكعبة خشعة على الماء, فدحيت منها الأرض" والخشعة هي أكمة متواضعة. (وهذا الحديث ذكره الهروي في غريب الحديث (362/3)، وذكره الزمخشري في الفائق في غريب الحديث(371/1).]"
ونقرأ أيضاً[7]: "لابد أن تكون الأرض في مركز الكون[8]. ويدعم هذا الاستنتاج ورود الإشارة بذكر السماوات والأرض وما بينهما في عشرين آية قرآنية صريحة, ومقابلة السماوات بالأرض في عشرات الآيات القرآنية الأخرى. ويدعم هذا الاستنتاج كذلك ما روي عن المصطفى صلى الله عليه وسلم من أقوال منها: - كانت الكعبة خشعة على الماء فدُحيت منها الأرض . ـ إن الحرم حرم مناء من السماوات السبع والأرضين السبع . ـ البيت المعمور منا مكة، ووصفه بقوله صلى الله عليه وسلم، بأنه بيت في السماء السابعة على حيال الكعبة تماماً حتى لو خر لخر فوقها. كل هذه النصوص تؤكد مركزية مكة المكرمة لليابسة ـ أي الأرض الأولى. ومركزية الأرض للسماوات السبع, فالحرم المكي مركز بين السماوات السبع والأرضين السبع كما وصفه المصطفى صلى الله عليه وس

لا يمكننا تطبيق قوانين الدنيا على أمور غيبية كالبيت المعمور والعرش إلخ.. هذه أمور غيبية نعرف وجودها ولا ندرك كنهها.. فالبتالي نعرف بأن البيت المعمور فوق الكعبة بطريقة أو بأخرى لكن الكيفية لا يعلمها إلا الله.. الله هو من خلق الكون وقوانينه وليس يعجزه أن يخلق أكوانا أخرى وموادا أخرى لها قوانين لا تخطر على أقصى بالنا..
ماهو البيت المعمور أصلا؟ ما كنهه؟ ما هو العرش أهو مثل ما نعرف في دنيانا من عروش الملوك أم شيء آخر؟ .. لا أحد يعرف ولن يعرف.. وعلى كل لا أسئل مثل هذه الأسئلة لأنها في علم الغيب.. نؤمن بها كما جائتنا ولا ننزل عليها علومنا.. كمن حاول أن يقول الجن هم الجراثيم! هذه أمور في علم الغيب لن نفهمها مهما حاولنا وأشك في أن قوانين كوننا تنطبق عليها.. وما أوتينا من العلم إلا قليلا..
و له شاهد آخر من حديث ابن عباس نحوه و فيه: "وهو مثل بيت الحرام حياله، لو سقط لسقط عليه". أخرجه الطبراني في " المعجم الكبير "(3/150/2) من طريق إسحاق ابن بشر أبي حذيفه و الواحدي في "تفسيره" (4/92/1) عن سعيد بن سالم كلاهما عن ابن جريج عن صفوان بن سليم عن كريب عن ابن عباس مرفوعا .
قلت : و هذا سند ضعيف من أجل عنعنة ابن جريج، و ضعف سعيد بن سالم، و أما إسحاق بن بشر فكذاب، فلا يستشهد به و لا كرامة .
و في " الدر المنثور " (6/117) : " أخرجه الطبراني و ابن مردويه بسند ضعيف " .
و أخرج ابن جرير من طريق خالد بن عرعرة : " أن رجلا قال لعلي رضي الله عنه : ما البيت المعمور ؟ قال: بيت في السماء يقال له الضراح و هو بحيال الكعبة من فوقها، حرمته في السماء كحرمة البيت في الأرض، يصلي فيه كل يوم سبعون ألفا من الملائكة، و لا يعودون فيه أبدا ". ورجاله ثقات غير خالد بن عرعرة و هو مستور .
قال ابن أبي حاتم ( 1 / 2 / 343 ) : "روى عن علي ، و عنه سماك و القاسم بن عوف الشيباني". ولم يذكر فيه جرحا و لا تعديلا . و كذلك أورده ابن حبان في " الثقات " (1/37) .
و قد تابعه أبو الطفيل قال: "سأل ابن الكواء عليا عن البيت المعمور ؟ ... " . أخرجه ابن جرير أيضا : حدثنا ابن حميد ... عن أبي الطفيل. و ابن حميد اسمه محمد، و هو ضعيف جدا. و لهذه الزيادة شاهد مرسل من رواية قتادة قال: "ذكر لنا أن نبي الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال يوما لأصحابه: هل تدرون ما البيت المعمور ؟ قالوا : الله و رسوله أعلم، قال : فإنه مسجد في السماء، تحته الكعبة، لو خر لخر عليها ... " . أخرجه ابن جرير : حدثنا بشر قال : حدثنا يزيد قال : حدثنا سعيد عن قتادة.
قلت : و هذا إسناد مرسل صحيح ، رجاله كلهم ثقات رجال الشيخين ، غير بشر و هو ابن هلال الصواف فمن رجال مسلم وحده .
و جملة القول : أن هذه الزيادة "حيال الكعبة" ثابتة بمجموع طرقها، و أصل الحديث أصح. و الله أعلم. (نهاية تحقيق الألباني)
هكذا نرى أن هناك أصل للحديث أصح مما عداه، وهذا الأصل هو ما بدأ به الشيخ الألباني، وهو ما جاء بالصحيحين مع اختلاف "خمسون ألف ملك" بدلا عن "ألف ملك"، أي: قول رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: " البيت المعمور في السماء السابعة يدخله كل يوم ألف ملك ، ثم لا يعودون إليه حتى تقوم الساعة". ومعنى أنه أصح أنه أعلى درجات اليقين في ثبوت النقل عن رسول الله في مسألة البيت المعمور. وكما نلاحظ أنه لا أثر فيه لتلك الأقوال من "حيال" أو "خرّ عليه" أو "مناء". أما لفظ "حيال الكعبة" وإن قال الألباني أنه ثابت بمجموع طرق الحديث، فإنه لا يقصد ثبات أصل الحديث، وإنما يعني ثبات تواتر من عدة طرق شابَها ما شابَها كما ذكر الألباني كلٌ بحَسَبه. غير أنها لا تقوى جميعاً على الارتقاء لجعل ورود هذا اللفظ على نفس الصحة مع أصل الحديث. أما ما وراء ذلك من عبارات "حذاء وسط السماء"،و" مناء مكة" فإنها أضعف في الثبوت من "حيال مكة" وفي كل ضعف ما لا يرتقي به إلى اليقين الذي يصل إليه أصل الحديث الخالي من أي من ذلك. لذا، فإن أصل الحديث هو ما جاء بصحيح البخاري وصحيح مسلم، ويخلو من أي إشارة لفوقية هندسية للبيت المعمور بالنسبة للكعبة المشرفة.
والخلاصة أن جميع الروايات التي اعتمد عليها صاحب دعوى الإعجاز العلمي، في علوية البيت المعمور للكعبة المشرفة، لا ترتقي إلى اليقين في ثبوت المتون المتعلقة بمحل النزاع (العلوية الهندسية للبيت المعمور على الاستقامة فوق الكعبة المشرفة). ونرى في شكل (2) تمثيلاً لهذا الادعاء. حيث تظل العلاقة الخطية بين الكعبة المشرفة والبيت المعمور على ما هو موضح بالخط المستقيم الواصل دائماً بينهما في كل وقت وحين. علماً بأن المسافة بينهما لا بد أن تساوي في مجموعها على الأقل ما بين بداية السماء الأولى عندنا وحتى السماء السابعة. وحسب معلوماتنا الفلكية أن ارتفاع السماء الأولى لا يقل عن بُعد آخر أجرام السماء رصداً، بحكم أن الأجرام المرئية تقع جميعاً في السماء الأولى (الدنيا) وأن السموات الأخرى تقع وراءها، وذلك حسب التأويل التتابعي للسموات السبع الذي يقره المفسرون. وعلى ذلك فلا بد ألاّ تقل حدود السماء الأولى عن مليار سنة ضوئية، وذلك بعد الإعلان في 20/10/2003 عن اكتشاف "جدار سلون الهائل"[19] الذي يبعد عنا مسافة مليار سنة ضوئية، ويصل امتداده إلى 1.37 مليار سنة ضوئية. وقد تم اكتشافه اعتماداً على بيانات مشروع سلون للمسح الرقمي للسماء [20]Sloan Digital Sky Survey. هذا بخلاف أن نصف قطر الكون النظري (حسب نظرية الانفجار العظيم) يصل إلى 13.7 مليار سنة ضوئية. أي أن آلات رصد السماء الراهنة قد تمكنت من تغطية 10% على الأقل من سعة السماء الجاري التنظير حول حدودها النهائية في نظرية الإنفجار العظيم.

I may come across a bit too extreme here, but these analysts and grads knew it wasn’t going to be an easy ride and will expect to put in extra shifts during peaks times. It is an up and down rollercoaster, that is what front office IB is about. The fact that they are getting paid obscene money compared to other industries and they are complaining does frustrate me. IB isn’t the only sector which has crazy hours! No one is talking about the lawyers are top law firms where they literally have no life either! But get paid crazy money. Go to another firm. Simple
This is 100% true. The one caveat I would add is that 100 hours per week sounds different to a college student than it does to someone who has worked a 100 hour work week before. It's impossible to conceptualize just how miserable it will be when all you care about as a student is landing the best job possible. Usually, once they start, new hires feel compelled to put in at least a year so they can include the experience on their resume and avoid bridge burning, but that is going to be the most challenging year of their lives. The money isn't worth it when you start handling people's money and see they're making 5x what you are and you know they're working a fraction of the hours you do. I can't speak for IB, but in public accounting as a tax specialist, I was advising an elderly couple on tax strategies. Her business was hand-sewn pillows that she would sell online and she was making $700k annually, as I sat there working 80 hours per week and making $60k annually. In public accounting, the hours are similar, but there is no reward like there is early in your career with IB. What makes it even more mind boggling is that people apply in droves for public accounting positions as well for the OPPORTUNITY to earn a lot of money 10-15 years down the line.
