Your "how to fell a tree" video from a couple months ago reminded me of the cohen brothers "the ballad of buster scruggs" with the old prospector toiling away, no dialog just letting the shots of the gorgeous landscapes do the talking.

That was a really drawn out crosscut with the saw that was very cinematic and the slow pan while you were behind the bench at 3:26 was a neat perspective. Keep up the interesting shots. There's another content creator that I watch (Ryan Knorr) who just visited some of his friends in Utah and he made a cinematic video of his trip. His passion is lawn care, but he's got a great eye for video production.

The thing at the end of the tape measure is supposed to move and you should not push it in when using it as a hook. It should move exactly the same distance as the thickness of the metal it is made out of. That way you get an accurate measurement if it is being used as a hook or if it is being pressed against something.
Wow, I've been 'burning an inch' for years, without realizing it was a thing done in the trades, to the point of having a name for it! I just do it in cases like yours here, where the tab is hard to line up to a mark, or if measuring from the end of a piece and the tab has been smashed and is no longer accurate. Funny story, I once tried 'fixing' one of those tabs on a tape measure, by hammering the rivets to prevent its movement, until an old handyman wised me up that it moves like that for a reason. It 'wiggles' by precisely the same distance as the metal tab is thick. So if you hook it over an end, the inside of the tab is accurate to the marks. If you push the tab up against say an inside corner of a piece, the outside of the tab is accurate to the marks. If you hammer the rivets to cancel that movement, it'll only be accurate in one of those situations. Or neither, and will be somewhere in between.
that wiggling on the end of the tape measure is by design; because when taking a measurement say in a room, against a wall, you press the metal piece against the wall and measure from the end of the metal piece; but when you then hook up the metal piece to your work piece, you measure from the other side of that metal piece; thats why that piece wiggles the distance of its own width.
The box contains a drill press for sure, since you asked us what our relatives had on their benches, and the vast majority of answers were drill press! This bench wouldn't be complete without this!

Watched the workbench videos with great interest. Beautiful job so far. I admire your work ethic. When I built mine I did a 2 x 4 frame and slapped a sheet of MDF on the top, screwed it down and called it a day. Didn't even paint it or seal it in any way. But what can you expect from an East coast guy? ;) Yours will last forever and will be handed down to your son and his son and so on. . Mine? Well, guess my son will have to build his own work bench. Maybe I'll tell him about these videos and he can have a nice one then. lol

I built a bench top like this a year ago out of 4x4’s. The wood was way more wet than I thought it was, it shrank and warped so much that my only option was to crank the bolts tighter and put a sheet of hardwood plywood over it. I already leveled the top with a router and jig before it dried, doing it again would thin it too much I think. Lessons learned!
I built a bench exactly like this last year, best bench I've ever had. I do a lot of automotive work on it so its constantly soaking up all kinds of oils and greases, that's kept it from cracking.i want to build another 1 soon, good tips in this series
Hi Wranglerstar , great workbench build,thank you. Regardless of whether your Mig is ESAB or Miller all can play up. I would recommend never ever run rusty wire through the liner as it will deposit debris and dust over time and slow down your drive so you must then change the liner. Also do not have the drive roll tensioner too tight and try whenever possible to keep the torch /hand piece as straight as possible when welding they perform poorly when in a loop or tight circles .You must also use the correct drive wheels for the wire type and its good practice if the machine is not being used long term to remove the wire so you are not tempted to run it when rusty. Also if stored, do not leave the wire tensioner tight long term, keep it unscrewed until you need it I am not a fan of magnets they can mess up your arc sometimes.Any help I can offer just message me,Richard.

Hey Cody, i want to thank you for these videos your putting up, ive had lots of projects but never a table to work on them, im going to follow your tutorials and advice as soon as my current projects are done. Oh, and if someone is short of time and does have acces to power tools, a router takes that edge off very quickly and very nicely, and you can pick what type of edge by what bit you use.

When growing up my parents were way to easy on me and now that I'm an adult I kinda wish they had pushed me and signed me up for things like you did with Jack. I feel I lost some needed "get out of the house and make friends" as a kid. I turned out great BUT when I have kids, I will push them to be the best that they can be. Growing up I pretty much did everything I wanted without any rules or curfews "which all I did was sleep in a LOT" and now that im grown up I feel I missed out a lot on LIVING. So good for you guys for being such great parents!

you asked about where to place the drill press and bench grinder. my suggestion is to mount them onto a 2x8x10. this way you can move it where you need it and clamp it down or put it in the vise if you need to. have done this with all of my table top tools. if need the hole table top that is no problem. got this from you with mounting tools on the french cleats enjoy your videos. you can make a shelf under the bench to store the tools. out of the way. Either Lincoln Electric or a Miller would be your best bet. I worked in an Auto Body Shop for fifteen years and that’s the two welders we used. I even had a Lincoln Electric Welder at my garage so I could do side jobs.

this video was a little less anxiety inducing than the last few! Takes some mighty big.....guts to cut things with a pair of side cutters like you did. Anyway, the table is looking nice. I'm going to guess the last component is a drill press and also good job Jack, keep up the running. It might be a little boring and tedious now but when you're older you're going to be thankful that you are healthy. Being unhealthy is a very quick and slippery slope so it's better to start being healthy early

You put the work into what you needed and most likely thought of alternatives based on other's opinions. There was a reason you resolved the way you did. By the Miller! (or whatever). ;) I'm guessing we'll see an overview of that Miller when you get it in right? Oh and take that ESAB out and use your trusty AR-15 and put a hole in it! Or two or three!
I have a very similar Esab, maybe the same model (251) and it has never fed properly either! I too wanted a Miller, but found this used for a ”good” price. Thanks for bringing us along!

Check the condenser's on the welder. If they overheat or just from age they go bad the welder will come on and have power but won't weld if they are bad. Pretty cheap fix actually. Hope this helps.

The difference between an inside corner and an outside corner. I always "burn an inch" even on flat rules just as habit. Sometimes rules start at the very edge, sometimes you have to look close to see they start a little inboard of the edge. Just more accurate to start at the 1 inch mark.
Great video. One question, though. When you measure the offset for your circular saw, don't you want to measure from the inside of the blade to the outside of the bottom plate? If you go outside to outside it seems like you would be off by the width of the blade.

Man I almost bought a Esab when I was looking for my first welder. I'm so glad I went with the Miller 212 that machine is the "bees knees" 👍👍

i dont think so. but i may be wrong. pretty sure that seals the wood much more then wax. you want some breathability on the end grain.
